I read a biography about her once, and the reason records may be unclear about what age she was at certain milestones is that Annie Oakley herself lied about her age for a long time since being youthful was a big part of her branding. She started doing competitions and sharp shooting shows when she was a teenager and wanted to keep that same image of a fierce young girl that’s good with a gun for as long as possible since it was such a big draw for shows. Supposedly she even instructed that her tombstone display a birth date that would put her in her late 40s to early 50s when she died (she was 66), but instead she was cremated. To be fair, it did work. She made more money than everyone in the show except for Buffalo Bill just touring the country for sharp shooting shows and later plays about her life. She was a real person but like some modern celebrities the character she played in shows bearing her name and the stories made up about that character often won out over the facts of her life.
Many years after meeting Kaiser Wilhelm and shooting the cigar out of his mouth, Annie noted that if her aim hadn't held true that day, she might have prevented WWI.
Fun fact aswell! Annie Oakley is also the namesake for a competition in Competitive Trap-shooting where the shooters all shoot the same clay and whoever is last wins. Also, love your work, Keep it up❤
If anyone is interested, there is a musical/movie about her called "Annie Get Your Gun" Ive been watching it since I was little, and its where the song "Anything you can do I can do better" is from!
There was no such use of the words "Gun Safety" back then. Because there were very few Liberal nutjobs. Everyone exercised a lot of common sense and logic. Something that those on the political Left seem to be immune to. She taught people how to use guns. Not the safety part. Because, before picking up a weapon, it was already assumed that the weapon was lethal and should never be pointed at anyone unless it was being used to defend one's self. Unlike the nonbinary and trans shooters involved in mass shootings over the last two years. A gun safety course wouldn't have helped them. Because of their political ideology, they suffer mental derangement. Plus their sexual orientation makes them unstable as well.
@@g3nn13g3ng3n and you think safety was a concern back then? lol. She was good don’t get me wrong but she wasn’t doing anything safe by today’s standards… everyone’s too much of a bitch these days to take chances for fun.
Annie Oakly is also a fun game trap shooters play! Basically you like up and one person calls for the clay and then they shoot at it and if they hit it the next shooter tries to hit one of the peices. If the first misses they are out. And if the second hits one of the peices the first is out! It's very fun!
I'm a female competitive shooter and I've looked up to Annie since I started (about 8 years ago), I'm the top female junior shooter in my state and have been trying to learn some of her trick shots
She was a sharpshooting quaker from the wise and mosey families in Blair county the eddingtons were also relative- like the nuclear physicist eddington.
The tools you use to sculpt truly fascinate me! You probably save so much time with those things! May I ask where you got them? Your videos are great, as I am a prosthetic sculptor and huge history buff. New sub!

Her name sounds like poetry and I think I have a crush on a historical figure... I've never experienced this before. This is like a second gay awakening. The fuck?
My Dad starting teaching me to shoot when I was 5. He called me Annie until he died. I have some memorabilia of hers that he had collected. I'm not sure why he was so enamored by her, but he sure was. He was also a huge Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan. And Xena. Hmmmmmm..... guess he just liked women who could handle a weapon... yes my Mom could shoot too, they're from Texas.
I think i read the book thats semi-based on her, i think its called “one shot” or somethin like that.. and MaN. *this book hit me HARD in the feels* She went through the shitter and came out happy in the end despite all that nasty crap that happened to her ❤😢 Like she did not deserve all that shit gurl.. *she DID NOT-* 😭😭😭
My dad said she was ugly, and had to hunt her one food because no man would marry her. Well he was wrong apparently. When I was at a shooting range the man working there called me Annie Oakley, and I believed he thought I was ugly. Until he said my shooting was very good. I believe he has to say that to everybody to get them to come back.
My great grandma was also great with a gun and was better and taught a couple of her brothers to shoot and four of her brothers went on to be in the military. Her husband and three of his brothers were also in the military, but I'm not sure what branch any of those eight were in.
I did a project on her in elementary/middle school! We got to dress up as a historical figure that met whatever criteria, and we would have "booths" that family and friends would come around and you'd have to give your speech. We had to repeat it soooo many times😂
I wonder if community references this in their western themed paintball episode or based Annie’s character off her for that one, it’d make sense bc she’s younger and a sharp shooter
I have the same birthday as her. My dad used to tell me about her all the time while he was teaching me to shoot, and gave me a pocket knife with her on it for my 7th birthday. I loved that thing. I thought she was so cool, and I wanted to be as good as her.
Culture back then was different. Most men were expected to be working and out of the house as early as 16. With the average lifespan somewhere in the mid to high 40s and low survival rate for children, it was not a sexual thing to marry early. With that being said, I firmly believe that is not applicable today.
question, i am in a ceramics class and i was wondering, why do you only score the connections instead of using slip and scoring it. i started learning and i remember being taught that you always score for extra surface area and grip and slip so that when it’s fired the slip acts as glue
You're 100% correct about her being the most accurate shooter in the Wild West. However, you're incorrect about her being the fastest gun in the West. I do believe you're a bit confused about her and her excellent shooting prowess. The "Fastest Gun" in the West was typically a title afforded to gunslingers that would engage in shootouts in Saloons or in the middle of town at noon typically, (so the Sun would be directly overhead not allowing either gunslinger a advantage, should the Sun blind them and grant a unfair advantage to the other pistolero (gunslinger)) speaking in a "Showdown" which had minimal rules of engagement and was a dual to the death, with only one man walking away. These types of firearm engagements is what would earn a "Gunslinger" the title "Fastest Gun of the West" which was the results of how many of these types of shootouts they were involved in, and were able to walk away from. The more fierce, deadly and accurate their opposition were as far as being deadly goes, the quicker that gunslinger's reputation would rise. Annie Oakley never engaged in these types of shootouts. She was involved in promoted and sanctioned shooting contests, where prize money, trophies and medals were awarded. She typically crushed he competition. Usually with a rifle. Not so often with pistols. Her expertise was with rifles. Not saying none of these events had qualifications with time being a factor (hence, supporting your "Fast" theory) but, the majority did not. The pinnacle of the competition was accuracy. If speed (hence time related) was a factor, it typically involved objects being tossed into the air and the shooter would have a restriction of time based on shooting all the objects before they hit the ground. If the shooter was unable to hit all the objects before they hit the ground (typically 2-4 seconds) they would lose to their opponent and that opponent would move up a level to the next level of competition. So speed was involved in some competitions, but, it wasn't used as a grading scale of who was faster, it was more along the lines of do or die situation. Hit the objects in the air and move up a level in the competition, or don't, and be removed from the competition. Ms. Oakley ALWAYS won these competitions hands down. If she ever did lose any of them, it was overlooked and not mentioned historically, or in her bio. So, technically, she very easily could have been repeatedly awarded the title of fast, but, it typically wasn't part of the context of competitions she engaged in. As previously mentioned, those titles were awarded to gunslingers. Which their competition was tremendously different than the competitions she was involved in. Where a "Showdown" shoot out didn't involve trophies or cash prizes. The reward was walking away with your life. Generally speaking, because you were faster...and accurate. You could be a lot faster than your opponent, but if inaccurate, it didn't matter, your opponent could draw their gun slower, but if more accurate, they're the one's that end up walking away that day. However, the two (speed and accuracy) went hand in hand. Annie Oakley was and still is (reputation wise) the most accurate and best shooter the world had ever known, but fastest is a very subjective term to use if you understand the point I was trying to make.
In her old age, she had most of her medals melted down during WWI, and gave the money to charity.

“…btwn the ages of 16 and 22…” unclear to say the least 😂
Yeh its annoying, but half the records list her as 16, the other half 22. I couldn't find a source that was clear on it
“15… or 21” 😂😂😂
Imagine losing a shooing contest to a 5 foot tall 15/21 year old girl 😂
Don’t think your height has anything to do with whether you’re a good shot or not.
I know but being a short person myself in my experience you are looked down on and people don’t think you’re capable of much
That’s the thing about guns. They’re the great equalizer, your physical attributes don’t matter.
