- Alternate re-recorded version of a song first released on the groups 1965 album "More Hits by The Supremes".
Mother Dear was intended to be released as a single after "Nothing But Heartaches" but as Nothing But Heartaches broke the string of 5 #1s the group recorded consecutively during that time the release of Mother Dear was cancelled as it had a similar sound.
This version according to "The Supremes [Box Set]" was recorded in 1966 and is the next song after "You Cant Hurry Love" implying it was probably recorded in the sessions from The Supremes "A Go-Go" album or "The Supremes Sing Holland-Dozier-Holland" album. The date is also supported by the more up-beat sound that is reminiscent of one of the singles being released in 1966 by the group entitled "Love Is Like An Itching In My Heart".
Vocals: The Supremes
Lead: Diana Ross
Backing: Florence Ballard & Mary Wilson
I love this "Alternate" version of "Mother Dear" I believe if this had been released as a single (this alternate version of course) it would had become their "6th" Number One Record here in America, making "I Hear A Symphony" their "7th" Number One Record !!!.
Its nice but.....i dont know about a number one. It sounds a little dated.
I love that bass!
Flo is working it!
Bravo!!! Loamo:):):) Very powerful and heart felt!!! "Chin Chin" Chente Anni Salute Ciao:):):)***:):):)
The instrumental arrangement reminds me of "When The Lovelight Starts Shining Through his Eyes".Interesting alternate version.
Great call! ❤
Jonathan* =P LOL.
Thanks. It gets annoying having to start over again AGAIN lol but I'm making my comeback.
I intend to post The Supremes' live set from 1964 performed at the 20 Grand club in Detroit =D as well as The Supremes at the Copa 1965 =)
@christheone8773 Yes the ORIGINAL mix of the song that is featured on the More Hits album was but this is a re-recorded mix
this song is so great. great pictures great song:)
Oh I know =D
They should have made the backing louder and put it on the A' Go-Go album =D
@Individuell83 Diana sings the lead with much more conviction and soul - though the backing could have been louder.
I really like this version - although the backing could have been louder. It's more lively and would have fit nicely on the A' Go-Go album that I believe it was recorded for
Now THIS is the version I live for! Why is it so much more difficult to find?
It will be a joy to post them - I was going to say make as well but Windows Movie Maker is such a pain -_- LOL.
Oh I've just uploaded my cover of Flo's EVERYTHING WONDERFUL - it is old as it was on my JonathanLGardner account but oh well LOL.
That is interesting that Motown would re-record it with a different arrangement around the time frame of the "A-Go Go" lp in '66. Thanks for the info.I like both versions.Love sharing info on the Supremes with you.
I''m glad you like the video so much.
Thanks for commenting =)
The released version was a lot lot better for me.
@MeetTheSupremes YOU may be right on that one - I read somewhere that, when "Nothing But Heartaches" stalled at number eleven on the Billboard Hot 100, this was regarded as a personal failure for Holland-Dozier-Holland - Berry Gordy entertained the idea of having the Supremes work with other writers and producers, but in the end, decided to stay with the HDH hitmaking formula-
@christheone8773 Haha! You see it wasn't so bad with WDOLG as the album had some earlier, more soulful and vocally experimental numbers on it whereas More Hits is mostly Pop oriented (with Mother Dear - for me - being the most annoying song on it LOL). That's why I prefer this version, because Diana sings the lead with much more kick and drive and the instrumentation really livens it up, however, I wish the backing was mixed louder (like on the original)
@MeetTheSupremes That's funny that you mention the word "kiddy-pop" - it reminds me of what I read in Mary Wilson's first book, "Dreamgirl: My Life As A Supreme", about her reaction to when they recorded their first hit, "Where Did Our Love Go" - she remarked that, to her ears, "Where Did Our Love Go" sounded like a teenybopper song - it had childish repetitive lyrics, a limited melody, and NO drive, and she couldn't imagine ANYONE liking it-
Haha it has that feel doesn't it.

Well I believe this version was recorded sometime in 1966 - around the time of the A' Go-Go sessions with songs like the up-tempo Love Is Like An Itching In My Heart
yes if was from A Go Go, it is on the 2nd disc of the expanded edition.
@christheone8773 I doubt it, Mother Dear was so kiddy-pop sounding it almost took a step backwards from songs like Back In My Arms Again which displayed a more soulful side to the group not shown on their first chart-toppers. I think the dissapointment of Heartaches signalled to Motown that a dramatic change was needed in the sound and direction of the group...

"Nothing But Heartaches" was a good, fast tempo record that almost any other artist would have been satisfied with the sales result. But it didn't make number one and broke The Supremes number one streak. I think Motown was freaking out at this point in wanting every Supremes release to make the number one slot. Thus the pulling of "Mother Dear" from being released as a single even though the group promoted the original version on TV. Motown got what they wanted with "I Hear A Symphony" and afterwards perhaps came to terms with the fact that not EVERY Supreme's release would hit number one.
Super soulful
@stevie68a The original version yes, was supposed to be the follow-up to Nothing But Heartaches but due to the songs having a similar sound and NBH not doing as well as expected Motown decided to take more of a risk and go for a more mature sound with "I Hear A Symphony". I believe this re-recorded version possibly was meant to appear on the A' Go-Go or Supremes Sing HDH album
"Mother Dear" was scheduled as a single and even introduced on the Red Skelton Show, then withdrawn. This version was then done with the thought still of putting the song out as a single. It originally was recorded as "It's All You Fault" and Berry hoped somehow, someway to make some damned money off it.
Thanks for listening/watching and commenting =D
Have a nice day.

@Schwartzwolf Interestingly enough, many people assumed that the real title of "Nothing But Heartaches" was "I Can't Break Away" - Just like many people had assumed the title of the Four Tops' tune, "I Can't Help Myself" was called, "Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch" -
"Mother Dear" almost made it out as a single and the Supremes sang it on both the Dean Martin and Red Skelton shows on T.V. Mr. Gordy thought the song still had possibilities so a new arrangement was written but as you can hear the results were awkward. The song originated as "It's All Your Fault."
A reuse of the beat in When the Lovelight.... Nothing but Heartaches was the right call.
@JSG1951 I agree! Thanks for commenting =)

Nice try, but this is the version with that heavy snare drum. And we can’t hear Flo and Mary in the background vocals.
The best version of “mother dear” was performed live by the Supremes on the Dean Martin show and the video is there to watch on UA-cam. That was a great performance of the song and Florence is beaming… and gorgeous. And you can hear her and Mary.
But your video gives us a lot of DR and that’s lucky for DR fans but not for Flo and Mary fans.
But thanks for the great photos!
shake, shake
@Individuell83 Yes. I prefer this version because it sounds more mature - not soo kiddy pop xD.
I definately prefer the more lively arrangement - makes it more fun but more mature than the kiddy sound of the original version =)
@MeetTheSupremes I agree, the difference between these two album releases is astounding - but, IN MY opinion, the reason why the "More Hits" album sounds pop oriented is because Berry Gordy wanted the white record buying public to like the tunes as well as the black record buying public would-
Yes it is as I believe it was recorded around the same time as songs like LOVE IS LIKE AN ITCHING IN MY HEART.

I WONDER - if "Mother Dear" was released as a single instead of "Nothing But Heartaches", would it have been the Supremes' sixth consecutive number one? Or, would it have charted higher than "Nothing But Heartaches"? (which, by the way, peaked at number eleven on the Billboard Hot 100).
nothing but heartaches was the right choice. this version sounds awkward with flo and mary turned down way too low. the version on the album is better but i like the heavy bassline on this mix
@christheone8773 Yes of course, it just bugs me that the song sounds so immature compared to that lineup's later recordings lol
This tune was in competition for release as a single against "Nothing But Heartaches" - but "Heartaches" won out against this one-
This arranegment is more rock-ish. Interesting.
This song is only ok. "I Hear a Symphony" was the replacement for it, and is my
favorite Supremes song.
They sure did!
Thanks for favouriting this vid =)
Have a wonderfully s u p r e m e christmas.
I prefer the version from more hits. This one is too fast and background too soft.
It's not solid fact but I'm sure that I'm not too far off the truth LOL
This doesn't have the flow of the original version- to choppy and awkward- Diana's vocal is strained.
What the hell is up with the tempo? Awkward and lurching. Unlistenable.
no like......sounds too annoying! bla!
