Romeo (Leonardo DiCaprio) declares his love for Juliet (Claire Danes), but discovers that she is a Capulet.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The classic Shakespearean romantic tragedy is updated by director Baz Luhrmann to a post-modern Verona Beach where swords are merely a brand of gun and bored youths are easily spurred toward violence. Longtime rivals in religion and business, the Montagues and the Capulets share a page from the Jets and Sharks of West Side Story when they form rival gangs. Romeo (Leonardo DiCaprio) is aloof toward the goings-on of his Montague cousins, but after he realizes that Juliet (Claire Danes) is a Capulet at the end of one very wild party, the enmity between the two clans becomes the root of his angst. He relies heavily -- and with serious consequences -- on his rebel gender-bender of a friend, Mercutio (Harold Perrineau Jr.), and Father (not Friar) Lawrence (Pete Postlethwaite) for protection and support. Romeo is, of course, exiled, and it looks like Juliet will be forced into an arranged marriage with the bland Paris (Paul Rudd). It ends, as Romeo and Juliet must, when Romeo hears a tragic piece of misinformation and brings his suicide wish to what was meant to be Juliet 's temporary tomb. This time, though, the turf and the weapon of choice have taken a turn toward the surreal.

Young leonardo dicaprio was a blessing.
Edit: me saying young doesn't mean that the current Leo isn't good. What I meant was that he looked so innocent and captivating. Every age has it's own charm. There are so many actors who look so good and when you look at their young photos they look even more beautiful. It's just the aura that changes.

I was 13 when this came out, and I remember this movie was the coolest thing I'd ever seen. The mash-up of classic and contemporary, peppered with all the cultural flair, was so fresh and edgy.
It's a work of art! I literally didn't understand 80% of what they were saying the whole film, but yet I still followed the story, that shows that they can tell a story without people completely understanding what the characters are saying

i literally grew up on this movie and i’m still in love w Leo 20 years later
Everyone keeps commenting on how Leo and Claire hated each other and it's not true. Yes they didn't have the smoothest time working together because Claire was a little too serious and uptight and Leo was a goofball so they clashed but hate is too strong a word. If you look at the interviews back then they have the loveliest things to say about each other and even now at award shows you see them hugging and smiling and talking to one another. They just had really different personalities but so what - all that tension probably made for better scenes anyway :)

I, Mrs.potato,want 300 subs um no they were supposed to be in the 1200s. That is, in the original story, many think that Shakespeare set it at about the same time he wrote it, so we're talking 1400s. Either way, you were a FEW years off.

Great film and amazing acting they did there parts so well both of them they actually acted love at first site very well. And don’t get me started on how gorgeous Claire is and she is still today.
This has been my favorite movie since I was just a kid and I feel more strongly about it now that I JUST LOOOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS MOVIE, the actresses and actors, the music, the colorful scenes and the beautiful story of love 💘 ♥ 💕 💗 💖
Since Shakespeare stories were extra asf, this story being turned into a movie just made it the most extra, overdone movie ever but it was worth it bc Leo's hot

Why does no-one like this film? Baz Luhrmann is one of my all time favourite directors, i love the cinematography in all of his films and the soundtracks he uses are so beautiful. I really do think the movies he directs have so much character (note i am a complete hopeless romantic).
Jasmine Brown I totally agree. I read The Great Gatsby recently and I loved the book, then I watched the movie and I am so in love with it. He has so much respect for the books that he tries to honour them the best he can. There are few directors who do so as he does.
I love it as a film but not as an adaptation of Romeo & Juliet.
As a film,it is really well put.. the settings,costumes,props,music and of coz the actors all had their charms. But as an adaptation of the original play,not really.
Jasmine Brown people watched this film a. not knowing Baz's vibe, and b. not expecting to have to think or understand anything for themselves. People watch movies expecting entertainment, but this is art.
