So far only comment I need to make is that the Manuscript in AW1 didnt say that Odin cut out his eye. It said he 'contemplated' cutting out his eye. Never confirmed if he actually did or not.
I'm only about 1 hour in, but I want to just point out that "vihta" does not mean same thing as sauna. Vihta is a bundle of birch branches tied together, leaves intact, that people use to whip themselves or each other in sauna to help loosen sweat and dirt from their skin. While you could argue that one can use "sauna"(or "saunoa" in finnish) as a verb to refer to this whipping action, I dont think anyone would really say that "vihta" means sauna Edit: you also forgot to mention the important detail that as soon as Saga tells Ilmo her family is swedish, Ilmo turns away and ignores her. Very finnish behavior
The Fortnite thing is extra funny because Fortnite canonically takes place in a massive time loop that is altered to match each new season. It also means that as of the most recent season Alan potentially played a hand in foiling the nefarious schemes of Dr. doom.
I just got to the section on Initiation 1, and I have to mention a small correction: With "In Between with Mr. Door", those are *not* "Oh Deer" mugs. If you look closely, you can see they are "Oh Door" mugs.
I can't lie, Monty fucking nailed Odin and Alan's voices and that's so fucking funny cause sometimes my brain will just straight up start replacing it with the actual one if I'm not paying attention, well played
Let's gooooo! Just in time for the Lake House! Congrats to Chase on his Remedy jump, and oh boy you were trying so hard for Neil to catch that it was Nightingale 😂
Just wanna say, you guys have been amazing. I was homeless for a couple weeks a few years back and lore dump kept me company throughout that rough time, love you guys
I was re-listening to the control lore dump, and there’s a point in the end where Monty covers Jessie’s therapy session, where it’s revealed that Jessie’s favorite poet it’s Tom Zane, but the therapist can only find a Film maker by that name. Having played Alan Wake 2 now, and listening to the Lore Dump, I’m not sure if this theory has been presented yet, but the idea that Filmmaker Zane is actually the equivalent of Alan’s Mr. Scratch? IE: Poet Zane and Alan are trapped, trying to escape, while Filmmaker Zane and Scratch roam the world Just food for thought, LOVED the critique Monty and this lore dump!
"As they're driving through this kind of rainy forest scene, very dark and leafy. I *just* get Twilight..." That's some Pacific Northwest quality environment. Trees, rain, mountains, the haunting remains of the coal industry, and a lot of people trying to come up with a new Twin Peaks.
I didn’t see this get posted, but I’m glad I found it when I did. It’s been a hard week for a lot of us here in the US, and it helps a lot to just be able to listen to three buds geeking out over one of my favorite games for over 5 hours. Thank you guys.
Weirdest coincidence of my life. I saved your Control explained video to my 'Watch later' playlist last night with the thought "I fancy watching this again tomorrow, I wonder when they'll do their next video on the Remedy universe"
Haven’t watched yet but I just wanted to say, as someone who has played through his game several times, watched several others play through it, then watched several analysis videos on it, and then tried to explain what I thought about it to a friend as I watched him play through it, I think trying to coherently explain this story and encapsulate this experience is an insane job and I respect the hell out of anyone who tries it. I don’t think anybody has or ever will clear understanding of this narrative yet and I salute you for undertaking an impossible task. So yeah. Good shit. Very excited to dig in.
Lets go! Happy Spooky Season lads. Hope you're all doing well going into winter! And congrats for all the life stuff. Also first for a first... What an episode to have that on.
fun fact: Tango is usually associated with Argentina, but Finland has its own style, which was popular from the 40s through the early 60s. The American equivalent would be Ahti singing Sinatra or doo-wop.
Logged onto work this morning only to discover i've got the entire week booked as holiday and had completely forgotten, and the lore dump i've been most looking forward too this year goes up an hour later? this is my day.
5:04:25 so... Alice is the reason for all the jump scares. Those scary images were probably Alice trying to nudge things around. I mean the FBC was never able to recover her camera, so it might be an OOP similar to Alan's typer writer in the dark place.
About the new game plus: The way i like to think about it is that the end was not decided(if metaphorically or literally I don't know) until the fans liked the game/ the ending. Does the end works? even Alan ask if it was to easy, maybe they should have written a heavier price for the heroes, who is gonna decide if it was a ending good enough?... Us, The players/Fans. And I even think that it's because of this logic that the new game plus was launched( or at least declared) during the video game awards. In that moment it was more than official that the end had "worked".
When I first saw this video up I decided I would watch all the others I hadn't gotten around to for this series before. Ever since the American Nightmare dlc I suspected what's happening is to plausibly take ownership of the lakes power Alan intentionally subjected himself to the pitfalls and horrors to best understand and claim them. I don't think he ever actually failed in the dark place when it cane to writing. The overarching master narrative is that he would fail or seem to many times before the ascension that seems to be happening now.
You neglected to mention that the third time Alan goes to Parliament Tower the statue in front had changed. It was no longer Alan: it is replaced by a statue of Alice.
Been waiting for this. Also, because I liked the Lore dumps for kingdom hearts so much,I finally decided to play the games. I literally just beat Ansem in KH1,and he was so hard lol. Or I'm just bad at the game, that's probably more likely. Anyway this will be fun to watch.
This is not 5 and a half hours, more like 20 cause u know ill be watching this more than once. The vibe between u guys is just the cherry on top of the remedy cake
One of the first echos you find Casey references how sins are like tattoos, I found this to be a erry connection to how the tattoos of the words/ manuscript would be on the body and the heart. I think they are a bit of inspiration
I absolutely love that while David made door his own, you can absolutely hear a bit of lance in his performance, especially in his last scene with alan. It felt like David was possessed by lance in that final scene. God, I love this game. Should've won goty, and illki and matthew Should've been nominated as best actor.
I specifically remember Monty saying Chase would not make it 2 hours into Alan Wake. The shock from hearing how deeply they dove into the games was massive. It's been a wonderful ride so far with this podcast, and this 5 hour monster is a gift.
Super excited for this! I love the Alan Wake games as explorations of fiction and the writer's experience. Also, they're just genuinely fun experiences in and of themselves.
Jeez Louise! The amount of content on Alan Wake 2 produced by Monty is now longer then The Lord of the rings trilogy. We need a bucket of oscars to value that properly. UA-cam likes won't be enough...
Y'all are fantastic and really help get through the day at work. 5 1/2 hours is fucking crazy and i wanna say thank you for all the hours of entertainment across all the games you've covered
One thing to note is that if you look at the Retirement home from the outside there's a spot where you see the two windows of Alans writing room. You can easily surmise that it's the room that Alan has been projecting himself from especially since it's the exact same room that you see when you are in the writers room during his campaign. As for how he ends up there from his apartment, that could be the Dark Place shifting reality to move him around which is something you do throughout the game. Go through one door and end up in a spot it shouldn't possibly lead to.
I hope this gets seen, the reason the cult of the tree had to do the ritual to kill nightingale instead of just killing him like chase said is because they were not the "protagonists" of the story so flashlight and guns wouldn't work. They didn't have plot armor from the pages or special protection they weren't even parautilitarians, they had to use the rituals because their collective unconscious believed it would work because they know that is how Alan stopped Barbra jagger
I started the Remedy games because of this series so I thought maybe I would watch before playing Alan Wake 2. I got less than halfway and said "Nope I'm buying this, 100% it then coming back to the podcast. This is too good". And yes I will 100% it because if Chase can do it, I can do it.
WHAT?!?!!!! UA-cam WTH!!!! HOW AM I JUST SEEING YOU POSTED THIS NOW??? So unfair I’ve missed out on this, that I’ve been looking forward to this for over a year, for almost a week! Ah well, I get to watch now!!
I think Alans look isn't him getting the idea for scratch, its him realizing that the Dark presence doesn't wanna take him or kill him its wants to BE him. its explained that scratch is anyone possessed by the dark presence. Barbara however isn't called scratch because she's not possessed Barbara died, and what zane brought back was just a vessel/husk wearing her face (note him calling it not his "Barbara") that the dark presence inhabits. and to answer chase the clicker is an amp the way the story usually works is it's a gradual changes with the clicker you can essentially speed it up to be instant hince the entier town immediately changing when scratch hits it at the end
Also i agree with neil i don't think alan is responsible or at fault for Pat its horrible that this all is making worse for him but alan didn't ask to be caught up in this magic nonsense
Just as I was watching the _other_ media discussion podcast I like, I suddenly get the notification for this! (For those who are curious, the other media-discussion podcast I listen to is Kill James Bond)
I did not expect this episode to come this early, but if we're getting the DLC recap soon (this is being written hypothetically and before I've watched the episode), then all the more Alan Wake for this Halloween season.
3:12:40 regarding mocap-- mocap is used to map the points on a persons face / body to match to a model. its not a 1 to 1 reconstruction of a persons face or body. if the character model is shorter or taller than an actor than sometimes body doubles are used for certain environmental interactions or an entire separate set / props are made scaled up or down to the actor so that it would match the "proper" proportions on the models. an actor having a completely different weight or body type doesnt matter when it comes to the modelling, and the actor would just have to act / embody those traits within their own movements (ie. maybe having heavier footfalls if the character is heavier or not as athletic than they are). thats rly the whole magic of mocap; to allow actors to fully embody their roles and have themself fully being that character while removing limitations of race/height/weight/body type and physique, etc. if you look at long term projects with mocap like rdr2 and bg3, there are actors who went through huge physical transformations while performing that dont align with their models-- an actor being at different terms in her pregnancy throughout her performance capture while her character in game is absolutely not pregnant in game, a bunch of actors gaining or losing weight and muscle over the years, esp w bg3 happening over the pandemic which altered a lot of ppls physical routines, etc. so more than "remedy wants to 1 to 1 recreate their actors in their character models so they made barry lose weight to look like his actor", i think this is very much purely a (very realistic) narrative thing. barry joined a "blessed wellness" cult. health nuts irl do tend to have skewed views on "healthy" bodies (often based in eugenics) and that overwight = unhealthy and must be "fixed" and "saved". it would make sense narratively, regardless of future character models and their actors, that barry joining a wellness cult would inevitably force an entire physical and psychological change (which he does say "youre going to think ive been replaced by an evil double" + "ive never felt so good and healthy, the leader is a goddamn miracle worker") and result in him looking drastically different / unrecognizable due to the severity of the cults rules / practices. cults take advantage of vulnerable & often mentally unwell people (and barry flat out says he wasnt "feeling great" after the trauma of the first game + abt his paranoia abt the fbc looking for him to talk) and break them down / often highlight their own "weaknesses" to then manipulate and (no pun intended) control them by offering them "solutions" for their "salvation". and then once victims are "fixed" and helped, the cult relies on word of mouth to draw others in (which barry is unintentionally doing, reaching out to alice, offering for her to come to the wellness retreat so she can be "helped") and continuing the cycle of recruitment and victimization and control / abuse bc "look at what amazing things they did to me- i used to be so unhealthy/depressed/in a bad place, and now im Healthy and Perfect and Happy and Thriving". so ultimately, its just a very realistic part of cults and, as you said, the set up for the blessed organization becoming the major antagonist of the next control game and alr giving us, the players, fuel to go against them for what theyve done to our main mans barry. anyways bless u for the 5 and a half hrs of alan wake lore dumping. i love yalls banter and im still so obsessed with this game, i love listening to people just talk about it and also getting to see neil and chases reactions to things.
I’ve played through atleast 5 times as well and one of the biggest things I began with to notice is just how often Saga’s VA slips back into her British accent . She literally can’t say her full name correctly once. I can’t un-hear her introducing herself as “Saga Andasun” to everyone she meets 😂.
The shout of excitement I just made at seeing this upload made my boyfriend run into the room in alarm 😂 Next payday I have GOT to subscribe to the patreon you are all the GOAT
I am not fond of blaming Alan for Pat's dementia, for a couple of reasons: If something happens in real life and gets funneled into the like, Alan Wake has to use it as he already stated. If Alan Wake write something, it does not mean that he created that thing, if Alan Wake writes something about Pats dementian then it does not mean that he gave him dementia, it means that he used a plot point, sometimes. It is entirely possible that the Dark Place just put it there, and it could have been because of what Alan Wake was going through as well.
The most "uncanny valley" moment for me in this game is when Rose says to Saga, "Oh, I know what this is!" The animation looks almost too real here. More than any other moment in the entire game. And I'm saying this after playing both DLCs.
18:15 bright falls is peak "hua hua hua" lmfao rose is so expressive in this game, the most expressive in the entire game i'm pretty sure. the actress did such an fantastic job. how she looks and sounds when she says "she...drowned" is like she's receiving that information for the first time just then, like it's being rewritten in front of us 53:20 i dearly hope mulligan and thornton's manuscript pages are included because they are hands down the funniest in the game, especially when alan reads them lmao 1:47:15 i interpreted his voice more like a sardonic tone, like "i know how this place works, of course the most gruesome scenario is the one that's needed." there might be satisfaction in no longer being surprised by it, but i don't think he was satisfied or unmoved by the horror, as evidenced by how much the train car spooked him going through it 2:49:22 it just occurred to me, thank god the creep who made the threshold kids never set foot around cauldron lake 🤣 3:17:25 i would like the record to show that i figured the person in the real world talking to saga and casey WAS the real alan because his AN outfit was alan's armor against the DP because it reminded him of happy times with alice. the DP was lurking inside but it WAS alan 3:43:26 i don't think alan did that to pat, though. i think it's a genuine conflation of pat being able to see through the story (like norman) and actual dementia confusing him further, unable to remember the danger of the shifting story. he knows something's up, he just no longer has the mental fortitude to fight it like he used to. and you know what? norman spends a ton of time in the sauna, unlike pat, and he's also mentally stronger 4:23:00 the other heartbreaking thing: charlie and charlene, the two thermos mascots, are jaako's kids 😟. you can hear them at one point talking about how they want to leave but it would break their dad's heart 4:47:50 how DARE you not mention that while he's delivering this beautiful little soliloquy, he 1) lands in the classic pose from the first game, and 2) it's delivered over the theme from the first game 5:10:54 freya took saga far away from bright falls/watery specifically because of her falling out with her dad and how dangerous it was. she was born there, yes, but she's not FROM there. freya never would've brought her back unless lives were on the line (and not her dad's) omg i just realized you didnt mention the only time saga is able to get through to her husband after the story starts to change! that shit is rough to listen to, christ
Chase 100%ing Alan Wake 2 is one of the biggest plot twists of 2024
So far only comment I need to make is that the Manuscript in AW1 didnt say that Odin cut out his eye. It said he 'contemplated' cutting out his eye. Never confirmed if he actually did or not.
The Dean hath spoketh!
I was not expecting this today but I am all here for it! Literally squealed when I saw this
I'm only about 1 hour in, but I want to just point out that "vihta" does not mean same thing as sauna. Vihta is a bundle of birch branches tied together, leaves intact, that people use to whip themselves or each other in sauna to help loosen sweat and dirt from their skin. While you could argue that one can use "sauna"(or "saunoa" in finnish) as a verb to refer to this whipping action, I dont think anyone would really say that "vihta" means sauna
Edit: you also forgot to mention the important detail that as soon as Saga tells Ilmo her family is swedish, Ilmo turns away and ignores her.
Listening to this was like playing the game for the first time. So glad this popped up on my feed ❤
5 hours of PEAK
Twin peak?
Can we please appreciate all the insane and at times spot on voice impressions. Holy smokes 🔥
Monty is such an amazing story teller, his channel and when he takes over for a vid here always reinforces that statement
Let's gooooo! Just in time for the Lake House! Congrats to Chase on his Remedy jump, and oh boy you were trying so hard for Neil to catch that it was Nightingale 😂
I have not yet watched the video, it just popped up in my notifications and I am yelling "Oh hell yeah!"
Same fam same.
I literally just finished your Alan Wake Playlist I'm so HYPED!!!!!!
FINALLLLYYYYY!!!!!!!!
My heart skipped five thousand beats when I saw this notification pop up!
Just wanna say, you guys have been amazing. I was homeless for a couple weeks a few years back and lore dump kept me company throughout that rough time, love you guys
A fun detail is that the Swedish name Saga is also the Swedish word for "fairy tale", fitting the whole story/writing-theme of the game :)
Scratch? IE: Poet Zane and Alan are trapped, trying to escape, while Filmmaker Zane and Scratch roam the world
Just food for thought, LOVED the critique Monty and this lore dump!
omg i don't think i've ever been so excited to see an episode of any podcast. let's goooo!
"As they're driving through this kind of rainy forest scene, very dark and leafy. I *just* get Twilight..."
That's some Pacific Northwest quality environment. Trees, rain, mountains, the haunting remains of the coal industry, and a lot of people trying to come up with a new Twin Peaks.
The strange thing is that everything based on Twin Peaks is better than Twin Peaks.
I didn’t see this get posted, but I’m glad I found it when I did. It’s been a hard week for a lot of us here in the US, and it helps a lot to just be able to listen to three buds geeking out over one of my favorite games for over 5 hours. Thank you guys.

1:39:16 That's when Alan got the idea to write Mr Scratch into the story that became American Nightmare.
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS THROUGH ALL THE YAKUZA VIDS! I love chase so much but god this has been on my wish list for this channel for so long!
about sam lake's tweet, I'm pretty certain that he tweeted that when the blue checkmark became a paid subscription, so that's the pun

fun fact: Tango is usually associated with Argentina, but Finland has its own style, which was popular from the 40s through the early 60s. The American equivalent would be Ahti singing Sinatra or doo-wop.

Such a fun lore breakdown !!! Ive relistened to this 2 times already!!! Very fun time you guys!

4:39:22 Exactly. Some people have complained about 2's Scratch but American Nightmare Scratch wouldn't have fit in a mostly serious horror story.
I've been waiting for this ALL YEAR.

Long awaited one!
New Remedy video, let’s go! Here’s me doing my part to help with the algorithm.
HOW DID YOU NOT CATCH CYNTHIA AS THE “KNOT-MOTHER”?! Her last name is “weaver”. Much ❤️
Already watched this twice. GREAT video. With the new DLC out today I hope the next video covers Night Springs and The Lake House.
I’ve played through atleast 5 times as well and one of the biggest things I began with to notice is just how often Saga’s VA slips back into her British accent . She literally can’t say her full name correctly once. I can’t un-hear her introducing herself as “Saga Andasun” to everyone she meets 😂.
Neil hitting the twilight notes was crazy skilled. That's my cult leader.
The best Halloween/Horror Special of the Year. 5 Hours of the absolute best (even without Muse)
3:30:15 The Dark Presence killed Cynthia the same way it killed Barbara ironically enough.
keyblade keyblade darkness hearts
The shout of excitement I just made at seeing this upload made my boyfriend run into the room in alarm 😂
Next payday I have GOT to subscribe to the patreon you are all the GOAT
I can't believe that I got jump scared by Cynthia Weaver while I was working on a Alan Wake model in Blender.
As Akihiko would say "I've been waiting for this!" I watched your Alan Wake 2 video on Monty Z, and now its time to hear what the boys think.
"Let's not overthink any of this and get back to the spooky horror stuff" is like the antithesis of this lore dump series
Alan wake 2 lore dump the day before lake house DLC drops?! Perfect timing!
I am not fond of blaming Alan for Pat's dementia, for a couple of reasons:
If something happens in real life and gets funneled into the like, Alan Wake has to use it as he already stated.
18:15 bright falls is peak "hua hua hua" lmfao
rose is so expressive in this game, the most expressive in the entire game i'm pretty sure. the actress did such an fantastic job. how she looks and sounds when she says "she...drowned" is like she's receiving that information for the first time just then, like it's being rewritten in front of us
53:20 i dearly hope mulligan and thornton's manuscript pages are included because they are hands down the funniest in the game, especially when alan reads them lmao
1:47:15 i interpreted his voice more like a sardonic tone, like "i know how this place works, of course the most gruesome scenario is the one that's needed." there might be satisfaction in no longer being surprised by it, but i don't think he was satisfied or unmoved by the horror, as evidenced by how much the train car spooked him going through it
2:49:22 it just occurred to me, thank god the creep who made the threshold kids never set foot around cauldron lake 🤣
3:17:25 i would like the record to show that i figured the person in the real world talking to saga and casey WAS the real alan because his AN outfit was alan's armor against the DP because it reminded him of happy times with alice. the DP was lurking inside but it WAS alan
3:43:26 i don't think alan did that to pat, though. i think it's a genuine conflation of pat being able to see through the story (like norman) and actual dementia confusing him further, unable to remember the danger of the shifting story. he knows something's up, he just no longer has the mental fortitude to fight it like he used to. and you know what? norman spends a ton of time in the sauna, unlike pat, and he's also mentally stronger
4:23:00 the other heartbreaking thing: charlie and charlene, the two thermos mascots, are jaako's kids 😟. you can hear them at one point talking about how they want to leave but it would break their dad's heart
4:47:50 how DARE you not mention that while he's delivering this beautiful little soliloquy, he 1) lands in the classic pose from the first game, and 2) it's delivered over the theme from the first game
5:10:54 freya took saga far away from bright falls/watery specifically because of her falling out with her dad and how dangerous it was. she was born there, yes, but she's not FROM there. freya never would've brought her back unless lives were on the line (and not her dad's)
omg i just realized you didnt mention the only time saga is able to get through to her husband after the story starts to change! that shit is rough to listen to, christ
You said "that is the ending" like 4 times and I find that very comedic
