Volodos has a truly astonishing technique - breathtaking actually. But he is also a wonderful, sensitive musician with a great sense of line, and an ability to let every phrase breathe, no matter how fast he's traveling! I've never heard anyone play better.

@@shawnmand5607 cziffra was the all time Best, he may very well be the 2nd but he said recently that he only played these technical pieces because was pushed by his manager or records company. Idk, he basically disappeared nowadays and only plays schubert sonatas for 10 years now. Sad. He could really be a 2nd Cziffra but for some reason he gave up. Sad, very sad.

@@pianosenzanima1 He also made a beautiful Mompou cd and a great Brahms cd. I think it's great that he skips the superficial virtuoso stuff and dedicates to depth and musicality. Now he really shines amongst the best. His virtuosity now serves a higher purpose. There are enough other pianists that still only please the crowd with speed and quantity. We need quality and depth.

Volodos is a true genius, but do hear Alexei Grynyuk play the Liszt Sonata in B minor or 6th Hungarian Rhapsody which eclipses even young Horowitz.

      Cziffra turning in his grave...
Volodos said he played these virtuosic pieces being pushed/forced by his manager/publishing company at the time, and that he never liked them. So comparing him with liszt, yeah, idk, maybe a Russian type of liszt, which of course It doesn't exist, but the Hungarian and improvisatoric liszt it was brought to its climax and maybe, maybe never unsurpassable Cziffra.

Apparently he's not the biggest fan of virtuosic repertoire. Ironic, considering he's probably the best in the world, perhaps amongst the all time greats like Cziffra, Horowitz, Liszt, Hamelin. Then again, I wonder what qualifies as virtuoso work to Volodos.

Citriano Torres the way and ease with which he play is incomparable. I have the privilege to talk with him after his concerts and it is something I will treasure forever. I was surprised how much he emphasized how he despise a virtuosity...lol. He can since he is the most virtuosic pianist that lives. For him is about something else. He is evolving as a performer. Currently he is all about Shubert and Brahms. Beethoven will be next, and I hope for Mozart eventually also.

Take a look at Richter's diary - it's easier to say which musicians, he WAS impressed by. Due all respect , you can't expect all the pianists to play, like RIchter would want to.

Volodos is a great technician, but the musicality is other thing, sometimes he plays piano and the phrases like on the typewritter, no sensibility or pianissimo, only the faster and more fortissimo, the better, that is why he cannot belong to the greatest pianists of the century such as Horowitz , Richter, Sokolov, Kissin, Ashkenazy, Rubinstein and others, just my opinion
