This song gives me nostalgia. I wasn't even a 90s kid at all, but I grew up listening to the pumpkins and many of their songs make me think back to when I was really little.
Don't let the music video fool you, it really isn't about an ice cream man who got fired and is giving away free ice cream to neighborhood kids.Even though Billy Corgan is dressed like one. Corgan said in an interview regarding this song that he was going through a period of depression and was in a really dark place in his life at the time that he was writing this song. Its basically saying that Today is the greatest day because it can't get no worse than it already is. Also hence the other lyrics in the song. It is about suicidal thoughts but not actually committing suicide. Then again we've all been there. For a beautiful piece of music and song writing its amazing that it makes you want to break down and cry.
+metalmaniac32960 I remember growing up in the 80s. I can't remember to much about the music but some. Smashing Pumpkins were one of the bands I remember in the early 90s. I just started getting into megadeth.
+metalmaniac32960 I think that's why I love this song the most from the Smashing Pumpkins. So much soul and emotion is packed into this song because of the behind-the-scene. Btw, don't forget to mention the fact that he broke up with his girlfriend, was fighting with his band, all while dealing with his own depression.
If im not mistaken the entire album was mostly done himself due to the rest of the band going through hardships in their lives preventing them to be able to produce it
Here's a funny story. I remember hearing this song in the background of be main menu for guitar hero, but I never knew what it was. I somehow mistook it for Everlong by the Foo Fighters, and I listened to that for the next couple years as one of my new favorite songs. It wasn't until about a month ago I heard this on the radio and remembered it from Guitar Hero and realized I had it wrong all along. I'm glad I finally found it because it's a great song and band.
The beginning of this song is long time bumper music on Cincinnati mid-day talk radio, on AM 700 WLW. My Shazam app helped me to identify the band and song even though a talk show host was talking over the music.
@@warloew8610 no, seeing those comments kinda get old seeing them on these old classic songs. Nowadays people just put that same comment I mean there's no other video that doesn't have that comment. People should just sit back and enjoy the music for what it truly is and write different comments. I'm not trying to start an argument or anything like that but all I'm saying is that those comments just seem to get old.
@@justinbcyt Or, people could JUST LISTEN. It's music. Why can't people just appreciate art, and life, for what it is, without complaining or debating about who's got this or that opinion? Everyone acts like they've got it all figured out, yet we all leave the same stain on our planet when we die.
I've been through sickness, worst break up, depression angst and stress in the last six months. I can totally relate to this song, yet I'm getting by living from day to day.
@GYPSY KING FURY I guess you found it funny? Well it's not even slightly fun but it have toughen me up. Instead of being mean, have a little compassion 😪 You have a good day.
the difference here is, back in the 90s, we didnt have phones with us at all time, we didnt text each other.. we fucking walked to our friends house and then we went out skating... so a fuckton has changed if you compare the 90s to what we have now.. the 90s was way more connected to the other decades..
Sue McQueen we already feel like shit watching everything around us fall apart. i don't have a single friend who doesn't hate the generation they're growing up in. no need to make us feel like shit just for being born at an unfortunate time.
Estiifan Ahmup Wtf? Born in the 90s without technology? What does technology mean to you? If you were born in 1990, you've had internet most of your life and people started getting cellphones when you were 10. That's not much time without technology.
this kind of music helps me with my depression. you can really relate to bands like this, the cure, the smiths, radiohead, ect... this truly is great music
i remember this song from Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock or Rockband, one of those 😂 but just saw If i stay today and once i heard the song it legit made me warm inside. So glad a great movie could implement a great song like this.
I think this is the most amazing song I've ever heard! at first I blew it off like whatever saying oh I've never been a smashing pumpkins fan. Well I listened to this song a few times and it blew my mind! So many emotions captured in it all at once the the joy the passion. the apathy and the despair amazing that all of that can be captured in one song. The way he says today's the greatest is so bittersweet. This song literally just expressed how I feel pretty much every day and had felt my whole life. The melodic arrangement is incredible. The guitar the vocals this song is spiritual wow.

To those curious about the meaning of the song, as Billy Corgan said in an interview upon the release, it is about feeling suicidal. Its about being so depressed to the point of feeling like your losing your mind. You go so deep in depression you come out the other side, saying this is the greatest day feeling almost joyful. But to many who only know the chorus think its a sunshine and butterflies happy song. Funny.
This song was playing in my hospital room when I gave birth to my son. Today is the greatest day I've ever known...can't live for tomorrow...I was already in labor for 24 hrs! Those pink ribbon scars...regrets...he was born too early & his lungs collapsed. The lyrics beautifully fit our experience. To me it isn't about suicide, but it fit the struggle of my son being born. No matter what the artist's intention, the beauty of music & art is that it is open to interpretation. :)
The guitar sounds in some ways exactly like his voice. "I want to turn you on" everytime i heard that line as a kid would send chills up my spine props to the 90s generation for taking so much pride for no particular reason
I can still remember good times, me and my best friends packed in a car, this coming on the radio, and all of us starting to belt it out... ahh the memories!
I for one am glad I was born when I was born, I'm able to listen to yesteryear's awesome music with a simple click, back then you were lucky enough to hear it on the radio or find it at a record store.
There are epic guitar intro's and riffs associated with every era of music. The originators like Chuck Berry, Elvis, The Beatles, Rolling Stones & others had theirs. The 70's bands like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Boston, and others had theirs. The 80's hair bands like Bon Jovi, Guns N Roses, Journey, The Scorpions and others had theirs. The intro on this song is easily one of the top 2 or 3 of any band from the 90's.
+Daniel Coe I was under the impression that today is the greatest day because he's going to end it today.I know we should be positive if we can,but the lyrics do seem to point in that direction. Why does his belly sting?
+Greg Wells "Pink ribbon scars that never forget", that means he's cutting so I assume that that's where he's cutting but I can be totally wrong but I know for a fact that the pink ribbons means cutting.
+Tanya Gaytan I was thinking the scars were on his wrists, like he had tried before, and his belly stings because he ate a bunch of pills.Maybe my bigger question is why he would bring up turning somebody on in the middle of all this.Maybe the need to please others right up to the end.
I heard this song one morning after a wonderful acid trip. It was so fitting. For any of you out there thinking life isn't worth living and needing a friend, you got one right here :)
Hey, can we stop with the whole hating on kids who like old music and wish they could've been around when these bands were more active and still releasing albums, I get that it got annoying to see 14 yo hot topic trash complaining but give the children a friggin' break m9's

I'm glad I didn't. I'm lucky to have been born in 1998. I got to experience the 90s legacy, and got to grow up with the internet, and a more progressive society.
I can't help but think about a friend that left this earth 5 years ago when I hear this song. Smashing Pumpkins was her favorite band. I miss her and think of her everyday.
lol everyone back then used to tell me that I was emo because of that. Yeah after la secundaria I stopped being a fan, but I most admit that I still listen to them once in awhile.
"Le wrong generation I was born in 2002 and all music now sucks because I am so fucking retarded I only know the most mainstream crap thats around and don't understand that back in the 90s most people listened to shit like The Spice Girls and Marky Mark but yet I feel the need to go on about how a bunch of bands that aren't even very good compared to alot of others that were around at the time are "real music" and is better than all the other music that's around now because I'm like 14 and have no real problems of my own"
You right son. Music died in the 90's. Can't recall one band that I am a true fan after mid to late 90's. Check out Pink Floyd. Decades of mind bending bliss. :)
PYSCOPOMP check out Metz and Death From Above 1979 and Biffy Clyro to realize how wrong you are about "how today's music is shit". I know what you mean, don't get me wrong, I'm provocative only to tell that good music always has and always will exist as long as talented people are there to perform it and true music fans are there to look for it ;)
I find that it depends on what kind of music you like. I've found quite a few new bands I like, but none of them are mainstream. (Seeing how that hardly even qualifies as music)
This song gives me nostalgia. I wasn't even a 90s kid at all, but I grew up listening to the pumpkins and many of their songs make me think back to when I was really little.

I'm not a 90s kid but I love 21 Pilots and other modern songs but Smashing Pumpkins and other 90s rock defined my preteen years

Today is....TODAY IS....Today is... THE GREATEST..DAY-Y-YYYY
Who else is listening in 2039?
Awesomeness incarnate.
I feel bad for the people who didn't live in/expeirence the 90's.
I feel sorry for myself, too.
I'm glad I didn't. I'm lucky to have been born in 1998. I got to experience the 90s legacy, and got to grow up with the internet, and a more progressive society.
Im lucky to have been born in 1993.
I can't help but think about a friend that left this earth 5 years ago when I hear this song. Smashing Pumpkins was her favorite band. I miss her and think of her everyday.
what kind of "Mi muñeca está llorando" by Pxndx is this?
XD jajajaja
what kind of mexican meme is this dude fucking panda is for emos of secundaria
lol everyone back then used to tell me that I was emo because of that. Yeah after la secundaria I stopped being a fan, but I most admit that I still listen to them once in awhile.
yuri ruzemberg when i first heard this song i though it was that one, lol, and im not in middle school and i still sometimes listen to Pxndx
oh this song is wonderful....im seeing them in concert in october!!! so excited!!!
Alexandre Philippe Will do bud. Always looking for great music I am missing out on.
Uncle Fester Check out cage the elephant, young the giant or the foo fighters. All great modern bands and the list goes on.
This song makes any bitter day for me better.
