This is what I absolutely *_love_* about history! How France and England just fought constantly and constantly, never ending conflict. Bitter rivals, nothing could pull them together. France almost conquered the world twice, until Britain somehow pulled off both times with a victory, and after that Germany became a nation too powerful for either of them to face alone which led them to stop fighting and working together, never fighting in a war as each other's enemies again. It's such an amazing story that just intrigues me...

It's intellectually totally dishonest to compare how isolated Napoleon was compared with Britain, which won only because they financed coalitions with countries that had bigger land forces than them. The only real powerful (kind of) ally France had was Spain, but as you know Spain became one of the main reason french soldiers died during the entire war. The Poles and some small states were a great help, but nothing comparable with ALL the most powerful nations of that era. France was the dominant and most influential european nation from Louis XIV to Napoleon. It was defeated at the end, not by Britain, but by coalitions led by Britain. And this difference is very important. Britain has never been able to face the French on their own, as they had a too small army, and therefore paid other nations to fight. This had a name : the golden cavalry of Saint George

This kind of polemic comes in part from bitterness, denial, an exaggerated or fictitious feeling of cultural inferiority (disseminated and propagated among their population by certain elites through their propaganda) with regard to historical reality of the French origins factor , such as conquest, domination, influence or even the roots of their foundations.
The elites of the government of the third French Republic (1870-1940) did the same, after the defeat of France in the Franco-Prussian War, by sending a French historian to jail because he said that the Franks were a Germanic tribe.

France has always been terrible at international diplomacy, whereas England generally does it well. The problem is that England builds strength when others are weak, and France builds strength when they need to fight - the whole culture of élan- Joan of Arc, Napoleon...
France's ingrained irony is that practically every challenge it faced pre-WW2 it managed to overcome and build strength from, but everytime it became a power the world knocked it down because France don't make good friends. Take the USA - a nation that could very easily have fallen into French influence, losing potentially it's best ally over sheer arrogance. England however, once they have power, consolidate it well with strategic alliances, but their power base is built on bluff and alliance. It couldn't have taken India without pitting it against itself, and turning it into a religious killing floor.
They are both nations that have murdered far more than their fair share, and I say that as an Englishman. We turned our rivalry into a global issue, and paid for it in the blood of bystanders. Sadly though we aren't unique in this. Nationhood is just legal gang warfare, and one day I hope we can get rid of it entirely and progress as a species rather than a nation. Naive bleeding heart crap I know but it's never not worth looking at the ideal rather than the current reality.

@@joeturner1597 From 1963 to 1979, the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) fought relentlessly against the independence movement in Quebec. Manipulations, provocations, burglaries, arson, conspiracies, these are some of the most famous misdeeds of the RCMP during this secret war.
In 1970, after the assassination of the federal minister Pierre Laporte, the anti-terrorist section of the Montreal police recruited Carole Devault to infiltrate the FLQ (Front de liberation du Québec) and discover where James Richard Cross was sequestered. To prove her credibility within the group, the young woman does not hesitate to organize a hold-up. But its activities will not stop with the end of the October crisis. It will set up fake FLQ cells and commit with accomplices a series of terrorist acts. The police will thus succeed in maintaining a climate of fear and insecurity among the population and slowing down the independence movement.
In 1972, seeing the Parti Québécois regain popularity, the RCMP set up, with the help of the CIA, Operation Ham to steal the list of 60,000 party members. No less than 44 police officers will be assigned to this extraordinary and totally illegal mission.
On the night of July 26, 1974, the first terrorist attack occurred for more than a year and a half. The target is the home of the heiress of Steinberg supermarkets. The police discovered that the attacker was an RCMP officer, Robert Samson, who worked for the anti-terrorist squad. At his trial, the man reveals that this terrorist act was not the only one. His confessions will trigger the Keable and McDonald inquiry into the Canadian secret service. It will be seen that the RCMP routinely used illegal methods to come to an end.
On May 7, 1992, the public learned with amazement that between 1974 and 1977, Claude Morin, Minister for Intergovernmental Affairs and close ally of René Lévesque, was an agent paid by the RCMP under the code names of "Q-1" and "French Minuet", he received over $ 12,000 from the RCMP.

Of course Jack could referring to a naval jack, which it is, but calling someone a mong because they use the name Union Jack is not necessary, because the flag is today know as Union Jack, regardless of it being on a ship or not.

@@PolishBehemoth The Union Jack (the union flag argument is petty and meaningless) is the flag of the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom is made up of multiple countries, England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. England itself uses a different flag. If you were to portray the English army at Agincourt using the flag of the UK, it would be completely out of place and incorrect (Agincourt happend in 1415, the UK was formed in 1707 - 300 years after the battle).
Another good example is the term "British". British is often used as a synonym for English, when it reality it refers to any inhabitant of Britain (Britain being the island England is based on, including Wales and Scotland too).
So no, the English aren't dumb, you just don't understand the history of the flags or the terminology.

Yes, capitalism degrades the social situation in particular of the poorest. But like in the UK. And the poverty rate in UK is higher (look at the social situation in nothern England, incomparable in France thanks to a effective social protection).
Unemployment in France is high, yes, because our industry is relocated. A choice of our elites. But the social movments in France are powerful, an historical tradition, and will force the gouvernment to reajustments (ecological transition, reindustrialization, and the productivism will be doomed...). Since the last elections, Macron no longer has a majority.
Brexit isolates the UK. It's not an economic collapse but a long erosion. Not yet today because the pre brexit period favored stocks, therefore the GDP and the borders are not yet closed.
Finally, the British economy is above all financial, but more fragile: as soon as there is a crisis, it plunges. There will be more and more crisis.

The hundred years war was more of a civil war between the French king and his rebellious nobles (some of which happened to also be kings of England) than it was a war between France and England, the "English" kings spoke French and their claims to the French throne were based on their French noble lineage. On top of this the population of medieval France was about 4 times the size of that of medieval England, if it had been just a war between England and a united France the French would have steam rolled them at that point. During the latter part of the war a stronger English and French national identity emerged with English nobility taking to use of the English language as well the Burgundians switching sides to join the French and the "English vs French" narrative of the war emerged and was retroactively applied to the entire conflict. After this conflict was resolved the rivalry was was basically non existent, as a matter of fact the English actually fought alongside the French during parts of the Italian wars and the Thirty years war. After losing their French land the English simply didn't have the manpower to pose a realistic threat the France and as such the weren't a viable rival.
It was only around the turn of the 18th century that Britain began to pose a threat once the British isles had experienced significant population growth, had established lucrative colonies in North America, and were politically united by the acts of union. It was at this time that England joined coalitions against France in the nine years war and the war of the Spanish succession. Their rivalry continued throughout the century during which they fought in the seven years war and the war of the Austrian succession as well as the American Revolution. The rivalry continued after the French Revolution with the Napoleonic wars however afterwards it subsided. During the 19th century the British and French began to admire one another and ended up fighting alongside one another in the Crimean war and later both world wars. There was some level of rivalry with respect to colonization in the late 19th century but the French and British were allies at this point and this was never manifested in violence.
So in summary the "1000 years of rivalry" was more like 100. The true rivals of the French were always the Germans but the Brits like to give themselves a false sense of historical importance even though they were a second rate power during the 16th and 17th centuries. They also claim that they were far and away the most powerful country in the world during the 19th century even though the French were never very far behind and in the latter decades the Germans and Americans could give them a run for their money. We Americans are spoon fed their skewed account of European history because for most of us the only European language we speak is English, another example of this is how we only ever seem to hear about the great English victories of the Hundred Years war (crecy, agincourt, etc.) and not about the French victories even though the French won the war, all you ever hear about the French is that Joan of Arc existed. This "rivalry" with the French reminds me of their one sided soccer rivalry with the Germans, wherein the Germans themselves only care about their rivalry with the Dutch.

Especially considering," contrary to how it often portrayed", old English culture dominated the effectiveness of the English side, not the Angevin influence.
*The only reason England even thought it could go to war against France at that time, was because of the "English longbow"- The most effective and impressive military invention of the Middle Ages. Not only was this an invention of the Celts on the English/Welsh border, but also 90% of the English army was made up of Anglo-Saxons and Celts, who were of course the archers and the foootsoldiers
*Although the Normans were in transition between a mixture of English and French culture, at that time, with Henry IV , being the 1st king insisting on speaking English, Even if we were to consider the cavalry/knights as French, they wouldn't even have tried to invade France and battle, without the archers ascendancy over the French, because the French knights/cavalry was so much more populous, with France being a massive population by comparison, that they would have been crushed and annihilated, within the 1st few battles without the victories of the archers and the longbow

When I was young I hated the English like the bad guys in a movie, I was taught that. Then as we grow up we think for ourselves and we change our ideas. This rivalry doesn't bother me it actually amuses me, but I hate people who take this rivalry too seriously, they are superficial.

I think we all owe Germany for bringing us together, they presented such a major threat in WW2 that they had everyone looking at each other and thinking "yea...are going to need help, can we be friends already?". Germany may have been late to the party but they are like the smart friend that tends to be locked in his room and everyone has to go check on from time to time. When he finally comes out its like "hey!" "what have you been up to in there?".

The funny thing about English&French competition is that their languages have something in common which is a degree of discrepancy between pronunciation and spelling compared to other European languages which have more consistent pronunciation and less arbitrary rules. :D

When Wilhelm Herschel discovered a new planet he suggested to name that planet in respect to English king George, Georgium Sidus.
But science society in France made decission to name that new planet Uranus instead of Georgium. I'm quite sure the French knew very well how the English would pronunciate that name, instead of their king's name.

    • @elbentos7803
      @elbentos7803 5 років тому +3

Indeed Uranus doesn't exists in Roman mythology (at least, from what I recall). Therefore, it should have been "Ouranos".
But, celebrating the king of England with a gross insult is something the French astronomers could very well be inclined to do.
      Especially at this time...

Jérôme Lalande (a french) proposed that it be named Herschel in honour of its discoverer.
Johann Elert Bode (a german) proposed Uranus, the Latinised version of the Greek god of the sky, Ouranos. Cause, Saturn was the father of Jupiter, the new planet should be named after the father of Saturn.
