Well, it was coming from an emotional place, there was no logic involved. Yale was basically a symbol of her parents always taking control over her/their lives. It actually made sense from her POV that she did freak out. Because it wasn't just about the college. But you're right, to the viewer it is pretty insane reaction.
As an English tutor and script editor, I would totally give the Dog scenes to someone as a character analysis. You need no other information really to understand who these people are.
As flawed as Emily was, she always wanted her girls in her life. She fought for that relationship. And while she was never perfect, I’ll always respect her for fighting to be in her girls’ lives.
Logan: “Trust me, they never notice.” You have never met Emily Gilmore, sir. That woman knows where everything in her house is supposed to be and how she wants it. Stealing something from her is taking your life into your own hands.
And I loved how in A Year In The Life they used that to show how Emily was dealing with her grief by her blunder of commissioning that extremely large portrait of Richard.
I loved how you got to see Emily using her college background majoring in History later in life after Richard passed on (in the Year in Life). She loved telling the true gruesome stories about the whaling industry, and how she was forging along on in life. You got to see her grow again into a womans third act in life.
Her wardrobe too. Emily is dressed in a proper but somewhat dowdy manner. She isn’t the fashionista she is in later episodes. Kelly Bishop is only 56 here but the hair and clothing add ten years to her age.
Emily and Richard had their flaws, but they were a product of their time. It doesn't make their deplorable treatment of people of a lower class than them acceptable, and the show does often show instances of them being humbled, Emily especially when she has to interact with her mother-in-law. They were loving parents and grandparents, just misguided and a bit rough around the edges, but clearly always had the best intentions. Emily thankfully was able to get fleshed out in the Netflix revival. If there is another season, I hope it gets to show how Emily becomes the spoiling your great grand children kind of great grandma.
These two were definitely the highlight of the series for me. They were honestly the only relationship I cared about on the show, and I seriously enjoyed watching their dynamic on my screen. You wanna watch shows where everyone is nice and gets along all the time? How stupid are you? Emily and Richard made that show what it was
I used to think so. Now I think Emily is one of the best things in the whole show.
Sheesh, it's a tv show and all of the characters are flawed, which is part of why the show is still rewatchable. If you hate the characters so much you probably shouldn't have watched the video...
they're never practical.
This video has so many great scenes in it!!! Difficult not to love this show.
