HOF Bob Miller with the call
A different, better time before clowns like gary bettman ruined it replaced fights with celebrating china
The officials should have just let Hunter and Baumgartner go and then there wouldn't have been all that extra crap.
Islanders never should have let Baumgartner go.
ChrisDutch buffalo drafted Baumgartner
What was Roberts doing? I don’t think he threw a punch
Did Gretzky assist an opponent to the bench in Theo Fleury?
Never saw that before
Theo talked about this in his book. Gretz said " come on kid, lets get you to the bench" theo was confused, he thought about sucker punching him, but decided that wouldnt be to smart
Sportsmanship. 👍
Gary Roberts was thee man. Feared no one and a rare breed. He can throw punches and protect his teammates... and play. I was always gunning for Calgary, Sabres fan tho.
Thanks for the vid
He was pretty crazy that is for sure
you can thank Gary Roberts for teach McDavid..
If it was McSorley rather than Baumgartner, Roberts would have taken a beating.
Rn reading Theo Fleurys book. Theo told about this fight and i had to go here to watch this
So.... What did he say about it?
@Joe Schmoe hmmm, very nice, Thankyou.
Lol im doing the exact same
@@jasonsabourin9547 Basically he grabbed Baumgartner and tried to punch him, Ken held him at arms length, threw one punch and spilt Fleury open. Gretz then grabbed a hold of Fleury and said "let's get you to the bench kid" and skated him over to get treatment.
Does anyone know what game it was where Fleury had blood on his jersey and the refs wouldn't let him play until he got a clean jersey. So quick-thinking Fleury had a Calgary fan to throw their Fleury replica jersey over the boards, he put that on and kept playing?
It was a Dallas-Calgary game. Modano high sticked Fleury. I'm thinking '99 or '00...
Flames breathed on Gretzky , big mistake !!
Had't seen this one before. Nice find! Jay Miller may have been the most under-rated fighter of that generation. Tough, tough guy.
Miller was a tough customer. He even beat Big Dave Brown once or twice. Too bad nobody remembers him.
They called him Jay "Killer" Miller for a reason.
As a Bruins fan, it was tough to match the tag team of Jay and LB.
@@Boxingbear I remember him from his days in Boston. Dude was tough with a capital 'T' .
@@BadstreetMI Lyndon Byers... another name I haven't heard in years
Most amazing thing is how the Kings listened to Gretzky (for a moment) Baumer was going after Hunter for knocking him down Gretzky said no and he INSTANTLY stopped
Gritzky
Calgary won't back down from anyone
Kenny B just beat the shit out of two of them
Gretzky and fluery would have been some fight.
Fleury talks about this moment in his book. Says Gretzky had no intention to fight but only to help him to the bench to get cleaned up
yes .....gretzky would have pulled his hair and scratched his eyes out.....lol
pussy
Gretzky put his purse down to play medic
Winston Smith Or he’s the GOAT. Plus he had Jay Miller and Ken Baumgartner on the ice with him. Think before your mouth vomits nonesense.
Hey Fleury! Pick on someone your own size!
that wasnt his game tough guy - his numbers speak for themself
Yea bc why on earth would he drop his gloves?? That would be stupid
What a stupid ass comment
Back in the day when every player would fight if they had to...
not Gretzky or Lemieux
Gabe Good Those guys only had a few fights but still did on occasion
Every player fought? How many fights did Gretzky have? LOL
@@kpax45 Lol he still had 1 or 2
@@kpax45 ua-cam.com/video/-m2MepwEeDE/v-deo.html
Man I miss these days. Gotta love line brawls. Ken Sabourin was a good Dman for the Caps later. Now a color guy on radio doing a good job!
The most underated player in N.H.L. history.
@1:23, that was a flop and a half by Gretzky.
Then Hunter pushed him down! loved it!
Tim Hunter hiding out with Steve Duchesne while Bomber destroys both Fleury and Roberts. Good job Tim
@paul lick......lol
during the scrum.....'bomber" had his chance to take hunter out of the pile and fight.....lol
he looked at at hunter and said ..."i don't think so".....lol
instead he chose roberts.....lol
so...hunter skated by that pussy and he took a dive.....lol
gretzsky told him no, don't do it ....lol
baumgartner later thanked wayne in the shower while janet watched......lol
jitterbug
Roberts won in the end. But he took lots of hard single punches, it looked strange.
? He ate countless punches from Baumgartner. And Baumgartner bloodied Fleury. Amazing the stuff you can read on UA-cam@@ro33west
Fleury was fearless. Jumped in on Baumgartner lol.
Gretzky knocked down by a loose feather from a pillow...Kings bench cleared - players going after the pillow.
Obvious interference
@@Jim-pq9pm Yeah that may be, but back in 1989 'interference' wasn't called like it is in the game today.
@@FMichael1970 You're saying that that would not qualify as interference in 89? Maybe, but I'm not so sure. When I played hockey as a kid, that's how interference was called, and I played in the 90's.
@@Jim-pq9pm 1st off - you're comparing kids hockey to the NHL - big difference in what's accepted by the on ice officials who btw had only 1 ref in those days...Also - 'clutch & grab' hockey became a thing in the late 80s/early 90s.
Yeah - it's interference by todays standards, but this video wasn't last month now was it?
@@FMichael1970 I watched a lot of hockey as a kid, and interference is interference. That's how they called all it today, that's how they called it back then. "Clutch and grab" has nothing to do with nailing someone into the boards when they are trying to get to the puck. I've been watching alot of old games over the past couple months, and that call gets called. It's the refs discretion. Don't run your mouth about shit you don't understand
Gretzky got to be thinking to himself why TF am I on the ice with these monsters 👹 😆 🤣 😂
hahaha hahaha
baumgartner and miller on the same line.
Rekingcrew
Don’t forget the toughest McSorley
Baumgartner was a defenseman. It was Miller-Duguay-Gretzky. Duchense was the other D.
@@davidparada1307 David you're right. Duguay was worthless as a King.
La had some tough boys on the ice...mcsorrley, Miller, Baumgartner...wow.
McSorley wasn't on the ice for this one..... but imagine if he WAS !! 8O
I noticed Dean Kennedy on the bench too.
Very under-rated fighter was Kennedy.
Roberts was a tough guy too. He schooled a few wannabes over the years.
McCrimmon had huge bear hug strength, he even stopped semenko 7 times
I was at that game. Wild.
Roberts got tuned up.
It was a clean hit on Gretzky! if you touched him you would get jumped by some goon it was ridiculous!
Old comment but this when hockey wasn't a sweetheart game like it is now. You had to be tough. Could you see Mitch Marner playing back then...hell no.
Ya....did you watch the Winnipeg Vs St Louis game. Those teams are gritty...big ..tough and have alot of skill. The Leafs have skill...thats it. Marner and Matthews would play alot tougher knowing theses a couple of guys on their team that can play....but are just damn nasty. Those goon days are gone. But tough hockey in the playoffs will always be that way.
No it was blatant interference
@@okyouknowwhatever l think Disney on Ice is more your thing. I'd rather have goons such as Rob Ray and Tony Twist instead of minor leaguers such as Jacob Larsson and Austin Wagner.
@@okyouknowwhatever I'm not even trying because there is no need for me to. Fighting has been part of the sport since it was invented. It keeps the game clean and entertaining. And like l said, most goons have more talent then the Minor Leaguers you like. Like l said, go watch Disney on Ice because that's obviously more for you. Leave hockey to us REAL fans.
Where is the Kings fight where both teams clear the bench and the goalies meet up at center ice? Best fight EVER!! Everyone was down to their blues
If McSorley was on the ice he would have went mental after Hunter pushes Gretzky down.
Great hair on Ron Dugay.
Blame one person for the whole thing, the guy you saw giggling like A little girl at the bench, while Fleury's wiping the blood off his face from the punch he took for doing nothing, Mr. I don't want Fighting, interfered with the most underated player in N.H.L. history, in Ken Sabourin, Sabourin just trying to get to the puck, what was he supposed to do? "Oh, I'm sorry Mr. Gretzky, I'll just stand here, not do my job, and let one of your teammates get the puck", self righteous, jerk.
3:23 Colin Hanks' favorite player, IGOR LIBA!
When Koho was still the go to stick! haha
I bet Mcsorley was chomping on the bit to get out there.
Roberts was one tough S.O.B. but Baumgartner was a beast and easily handled him...
Roberts was tough but you could tell he didnt want to go all out against Bomber. Smart move on his part. Bomber was legit top 5 HW for a few seasons.
He survived and took some tough punches, very crazy guy
All that cocaine laced blood coming out of Fleury's cut!
and jizz
I think it was a little later on that he started that stuff. This is his rookie season. That's 70% alcohol coming out.
Never touch the princess.
haha haha fucking Gretzky! in middle of the pile. Flames never like Gretzky from Battle of Alberta days.
As a Flames fan of four decades-plus, I can confirm this. The Flames respected Gretzky, but didn't like him. Tim Hunter took special pleasure in needling Gretzky for years, usually with a trip or a love tap behind or after the play. Hunter genuinely didn't care what Gretzky or the Oilers thought. To Timmy, Gretzky was just another hockey player.
The Flames were the only team that never held Gretzky in awe. I loved that about the Flames. They were ALWAYS up for the Oilers in those days.
The players and coaches truly didn't like each other. If Flames players went into a bar after a game and saw any Oilers, they'd turn and leave. It was THAT intense.
My least favorite Oilers of all time are Dave Lumley, Dave Semenko, Glenn Anderson, Marty McSorley, Esa Tikkanen, Mark Messier and Kevin McClelland.
And we always called him Whine Gretzky...for good reason.
As a lifelong Calgary fan, It's ALWAYS a good day when the Oilers lose a game!
Better than ufc
Coach Ftorek hated Gretzky so much that he kept putting him on these insane lines. Miller and Duguay as your wings? That's why Duchense was such an offensive threat.
I guess he thought 99 could carry them? I think it would have made more sense to have Taylor with 99 at least but maybe they didn't mesh.
After Nicholls was traded they had to put 99 with Robitaille but they were thin at forward when it came playoff time until they got Kurri, Sandstrom, Granato, Donnelly...then you had 3 solid lines and even the 4th had a punch.
@@kpk33x Nicholls wasn't traded until the following season. Ftorek kept changing wingers on Gretzky. How about that high scoring Miller-Gretzky-McSorley line for the play-offs?
Ftorek was not ready for prime time with this team. There were a lot of stories from players who saw through him. He was weak tactically, he juggled lines and dmen randomly, it seemed. He did better a few years later leading the Devils.
Why would any coach hate Gretzky ?
Gretsky was a disgrace all his team mates almost got killed because of him
Not a good idea to check Gretzky with that line out there.... no good was going to come of it.
Love Baumgartner, great player !
Not a great player. Great enforcer.
@@bigbadbruins1 ....lol
baumgartner had his chance to confront hunter when hunter was in the pile....but he skated right past him to sucker roberts......lol
dummy wanted no part of hunter.....lol
shrimp....
@@huntercalgary He did I just noticed that.
Another moronic UA-cam comment. Maybe Hunter should have tried Baumgartner instead of Duchesne. Instead, Baumgartner beat up two of Hunter's teammates. Also, Hunter fought Hunter in 87-88 and no one who saw that fight would think he wanted no part of Hunter. @@huntercalgary
Love it!
Ron Dugay… the Jon Bon Jovi of hockey!
He could never take a hit once he got to the eastern division the great one wasn't so great anymore 🤣
Gretzky should have stayed with the oilers.
2018.. I wanted to see a real line brawl, so here I am.. lol
The most underated player in N.H.L. history☝
It was a clean hit
Clean clean hit
This is just yet another reason why I simply cannot accept Gretzky as the greatest hockey player of all time. The original hit was legal and quite frankly, it was pillow soft. Next thing ya know, his goon squad comes roaring in. "Can't touch Gretz! Or you'll pay the price!" That's why Tim Hunter knocked him down...because they saw that garbage when he was an Oiler with Cement Head Dave Semenko and McSpud Marty McSorely. It's not hard to amass the kind of points Gretzky had when no one on the ice will touch you! 😕 Not saying he wasn't talented but those stats would have been greatly reduced if every team played hard against him and actually laid a body check once in awhile...
All superstars had enforcers protecting them and they never put up the points Gretzky put up.
Gretzky such a sissy. The more I see hm playing the more I believe the best players are Lemieux, followed by Crosby and Ovy.
You say Gretzky is a sissy and follow that up with Sid?
Gretz weighed 165-170 so getting physical was not at all good for him. He has much better vision than Sid could ever dream of, and I think McDavid has surpassed Sid at this point.
In terms of all around play...scoring, passing, hitting...you have Howe and Orr. Ovechkin isn't quite as adept a passer (isn't asked to be one) but one of the top hitters. Early career Lindros up to about 94-95 was very similar to OV then got entitled, stopped hitting, then got the concussions.
Lemieux didn't hit either but may have been the best physical talent I have seen. He could stickhandle a puck out of a sandwich bag.
If you've never made it to the NHL,you don't get to call any hockey player a "sissy".
@@kpk33x 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Awwwww, poor #99
Often McCreary is the ref in these old vids.
And Kevin Collins always one of the linesmen.
Kevin Collins is 6'5 and stops most fights easily
Much respect for Gretzky. Helps Flurey to the bench
lol, except his dive started this all in the first place
Musicrecords10 true
@@Musicrecords10 It looked more like he lost balance and tripped on his own legs than an actual dive.
1:22
@@Musicrecords10 It was clear interference
Absolutely sickening how much Whiner Grefzky was protected. The NHL became a laughing stock because of Grstzkys preferential treatment. To be considered one of the best players in nhl history is a joke!!
Roberts was a lacrosse player before hockey and not scared of anyone.
He got tougher as his career went on, became a much better fighter.
Miller wouldn't have had his way with him had they tangled 3 years later
Agreed, he got very strong
Should coulda woulda... Roberts was a tough player who could fight against similar fighters. Miller is an all-time heavyweight who has a fight card that includes every tough guy who played at the time. At no point was Roberts close to Miller as a fighter.
"Hey Timmmay, you got dem gloves cemented on tonight......?"
Why is it called line brawl? Not just brawl? Oh and poor 99 God forbid he was even looked at wrong
They call it that when all 5 skaters on each side are fighting simultaneously. Usually it would just be one pair of guys, sometimes w, and everyone else spectating.
Gretzky was the first female to play in the NHL! He would not have the stats that he has if he didn't have that goon squad protecting him!
Philip Rogers You’re so clueless, it’s almost not worth a comment. Almost.
@@jacknone1564 I'm clueless? Don't be so butt hurt! Gretzky was a great player but he would not have as many points as he does if he didn't have the goon squad attacking anybody who hit him! That is fact!
Philip Rogers You’re clearly clueless. I’m not butthurt at all, I was never a big Gretzky fan. I’m not doing your research for you; have a look at the players in the Smythe division starting in 1979. Then ask yourself why Edmonton had a “goon squad”.
@@jacknone1564 I don't care who was in Smythe division! My 1 and only point is that Gretzky would not have had as many points as he did if he didn't have the goon squad protecting him! Thats all I was saying and that doesn't make me clueless!
Philip Rogers Fair enough. Who was on this goon squad? Semenko followed by McSorley? That’s what you consider a goon squad? The Broad Street Bullies were a goon squad. Edmonton, not so much.
A lot of guts from Baumgartner to bloody a 5'6 guy..
Musicrecords10 fleury jumped in there. Baumgartner showed plenty of guys over his career.
Fleury went over and grabbed him
Fleury just came over to make it even? Baumgartner was trying to make it 2 vs 1
@@Musicrecords10 Baumgartner came in because Duschene vs. Hunter was a mismatch. When Fleury saw Bomber over there he had to know he's screwed either way if he goes or if he doesn't do anything.
Baumer was looking for Hunter, Theo engaged.
Hunter was never particularly brave to be honest.
He would tangle with anyone
Ahh good ol' Bumgardener... The low-rent Dave Sementhead.
He didn't jump guys like Cementhead. Your getting Semenko mixed up with the other big jump artist Dave Brown. Probert straightened out Semenko and Brown.
And down goes Gretzky @ 1:22
I don't understand that Gretzky didn't throw a punch
He paid semenko and mcsoerly to attack guys all the time. Mcsoerly has stress disorder from all of those side jobs and even hit Brashear over the head with his koho. Very very crazy
