- Nick Schiffer walks us through this epic bathroom renovation just outside of Boston. The client had incredibly high expectations and wanted to transform their bathroom into a high-end spa. This primary suite bathroom includes a waterproof and steam proof "wet room" with giant slab tiles. We walk you through the steps we took to make this room beautiful and functional.

No wonder I couldn't find any Kerdi-band lately, you guys used it all! Lol! Beauty work
Yep, it was us! lol Thank you for watching Greg!
Wow that is perfect craftsmanship you are very lucky to have customers with pockets for that!
I can't thank you enough for the effort you put into your videos and your work. I am an architect (lowercase a) and found it difficult to find people who care as much about the details as I do - even amongst the people I work with.
You appear to care about them a lot - it shows. Hopefully one day I get to work with a builder(or for one) that thinks like you and understands that there needs to be no stone left unturned if you want to have a "perfect" product.
This is stunning. Love the detail and forethought. Hate that stuff like this is generally reserved for the wealthy. However, totally appreciate the knowledge share!
This type of Site cleanliness is every homeowner dream. Those builders deserve a medal.
Lol glad you mentioned the window deconstruction right after. I was saying to myself, “Man if a window breaks it’s gonna take almost as much work as the bathroom entirely lol. Made for elegance not repairable attribute for sure 💎
Please dont ever stop documenting your projects
The level of craftsmanship and execution on this job was crazy good. I bet the budget for that thing was the cost of my home lol
What a great step by step video. Thank you for taking the time to explain all the details.
WOW love the tile detail around the windows. That’s the type of tile work you see in a cathedral!
i applaud you guys for doing the work as it should be done and that's why the majority of us as viewers are amazed. every construction job should be done with this level of thought and attention to detail. the extra applause goes to the lunatic who designed this masterpiece.
Appreciate the kind words Mohammed. Thank you for watching!
Every construction job? Lol Barely anybody would be able to afford a home!
@@sundog8772 I’m not saying go to the detail that they’re doing. Most or their work is for aesthetics. I’m talking about going that extra mile to make surfaces level and waterproof, or making certain things are done to last the test of time.
@@mohammedelsayed2889 Sorry it wasn’t immediately obvious in your comment that you were only referring to water proofing correctly and making sure the walls are level. That part doesn’t strike me as being amazing given that this shluter system is widely utilized and any competent builder knows the importance of a level substrate prior to tiling or any floor/wall system. The work these guys do is incredible still, specifically the finer details such as the continuation of tile that butts up to the window pane. Those are labour intensive scopes of work that most would not undertake.
Holy crap that has got to be the most amount of detail I’ve seen go into a shower. I’m going to be taking some of these practices. Applause to NS Builders
Glad you broke down the process with this project. Not many people understand the thought and planning that goes into something like that, it's really impressive. Takes a lot of smart talented people to pull it off...well done.
Really appreciate the kind words Mike! Thank you for watching
Wow, can't imagine what this costs. Props to the trades for such high level work!
That window detail is fantastic.
RIGHT!?
A lot of hard work in man hour went into those details. Thanks for watching Chris!
Respect to the logistics side of this and figuring out the order of operations for the entire build. Beautiful work.
Thanks Jim! Appreciate the kind words
That bathroom is more watertight than a submarine! Love the thought and detail that goes into all of your work. 👍💪
Thanks Mark
The vision of the client and architect to go from what was already a good looking master suite to this is amazing.
True team effort. Thanks for following along Cole
🤯 next level is an understatement! That's an amazing project you and your team can be extremely proud of. Well done 👊
We are Justin! Thank you for watching
Wow, you made the bathroom like a fish tank, fully water proof. Nice work!!
Amazing! The interplay of design, materials, and construction combine to form a piece of functional art.
Props to your tile guys playing twister with the glass and tub challenges .
Very complex. Beautiful work
A lot of man hours went into this build. Thanks for watching!
Insane work. Waterproofing on waterproofing!
Great build , 2 steps ahead hope your clients understand the extras .
Awesome Video was recommended to you from Becky and Chris. Thanks so much for sharing Deb ✌️
I work in construction here in The Netherlands, awesome to see how you guys do things. Real professionals, this looks absolutely amazing.
Wow! Unreal. The who does what first thing must have been so tricky, as well as the back and forth between the cnc and the job site.
Beautiful! This is above all in quality and craftsmanship! The price of this bathroom suite alone is more than some homes in my area. But, you get what you pay for.
I feel like the instagram videos gave a nice behind the scenes insight to this wonderfully finished project. This is beautiful.
Incredible workmanship. Meticulously executed.
Amazing craftsmanship and intention on this and all your projects
This is just sick... Wow.
Subscribed in an instant
Look, we made the rough framing absolutely perfect! Pure insanity.
You guys do amazing work. As a beginner project manager i can't imagine how stressful it was to plan this out. Great Job!
Thank you for watching Alex!
You guys set the bar so high. Well done!
Thanks for addressing the windows! First thing I thought was "wow, how do you service those".
Nick,
Another bad ass job!!!! You guys do amazing work every time and love the videos! I have been listening to the modern craftsman podcast none stop for over 5 months and can't say enough good things about it. I have hour commute every day to work and the podcasts makes it better ride. Really wish I was doing what you guys everyday for my job.You guys should be really proud of what of you have accomplished.
Insanely informative! Definitely a few things I will have to incorporate into our master bath remodels. Didn’t know I could say “wow” so many times on one video. Thank you for taking the time to dive deep into this process!
Great job.
Hi - Couple of comments / questions
Can you talk more about the Siga material you used behind the Kerdib oard?
What lights did you use in the shower that are wet rated?
Beautiful craftsmanship
I'm glad you clarify that it wasn't meant to be replaced easily but lets be honest here, not a lot in this house can be easily replaced, there is to much detailing and patches are going to stand out. If you are at this price point of a house, you probably replace everything in a room if you need to repair.
This is an amazing build. Great job. Your attention to detail is inspiring, and your clients are lucky to have you. Could you talk about the waterproofing system for the tub and how you handled the drain penetration through the floor?
Stunning craftsmanship!!!! What did you tile the shower floor and walls with? Is it stone or ceramic tile? Brand? Name?
As a remodel junkie and house flipper.... this was amazing!!! GOOD JOB BOYS!!
Amazing work. I’ll dream for a bathroom like this.
I took a look at your website...It's staggering to think your at this level of renovations in such a short span... I started my company in 1986 and it took 15 years to get to this level. Who backed the company's launch? You're blessed to have competent sub contractors and office personnel. Hold them close...Good health, freedom and success to you and yours...Watch your pennies and the dollars will take care of themselves...:)
Enjoy seeing your tile portions of your builds. Hope you do more
Amazing work and attention to detail!
Appreciate the know-how!
Appreciate you watching!
Absolutely stunning and technically sound! Well done!
impressive
genius level details - super good job guys
Beautiful work!
So clean
magnificent, rolls royce of showers i guess
Well said. Thank you for watching!
Wow. How did you waterproof the bathtub drain penetration through the floor membrane. Does schluter have something specifically for that?
I echo this question. Dealing with challenges on another project with tub in shower room.
What a great out come, you-guys rock it-outstanding work
Thanks for watching Don. Appreciate you following along!
Safe to assume this homeowner wasnt drastically financially affected by covid 😂
Que maravilha! A excelente execução desse projeto é um item à parte. Saudações e bênçãos. 👏 🙏
Looks absolutely stunning. That is the type of bathrooms the expensive tract houses should have instead of the generic builder grade crap.
I noticed one design flaw though. While the freestanding bathtub is gorgeous, it has no niches nearby. The little stool isn't going to cut it.
stunning
Appreciate it Mark! Thanks for following along.
It is fantastic work you are doing
Thank you Andy! Appreciate the kind words
Im surprised its not LED recessed which are closed? Also what size tub was that? The rendering looks small the real pic I couldn't really tell. Thanks!
what!? this is like one of those "impossible" knots made out of wood - but in the form of a bathroom
Amazing
Wow
That is beautiful! But I can't stop thinking about a baseball going through that window... 😬
sick, awesome work
neighbors are going to get quite the show lol
So super useful info, thank you! Saving it to my favs
Incredible!
Thank you for following along Jared!
Can you explain why you chose not to use the schluter shower base instead of the mortar for the curbless drain ??? Since you have used almost every other product schluter manufacturers!!! Gorgeous work!! Thank you.
Beautiful bath with exacting craftsmanship "Wow"! The only concern did the floor have some slip resistance with it?
How do you install large tile on ceiling safely without it falling off? Is it thinner pieces ? Special cement for.ceiling vs wall?
Awesome video
Thank you Jeremy. We'll keep the videos coming!
And I thought my shower was complex with Schluter! 🤯
@NS Builders - the regular Kerdi Board with its 8 mil thick material just barely passes the steam perm rating. Also, Kerdi membrane does NOT pass the steam perm standard - this means steam vapors will penetrate through. You can go to the TCNA and check out the details. In comparison, Kerdi DS board with its 20 mil thickness in material is much better for steam showers. Schluter even suggests that Kerdi DS boards should be used for steam showers.
how much did this bathroom cost when its all said and done
100K bathroom? its beautiful and functional.
I wish you guys were in Miami Florida.
I’m in the process of renovating my bathroom. I need this detailed work in my steam shower. Do you guys know of any contractors who can do this good of work in Miami Florida area
Looks fantastic. Spell bound. What is the tile used for ceiling walls and floor
How much does a project like this typicaly run for?
Curious which Marvin windows were used? Are the operable? We are replacing the windows on our home and getting close to the Master Bath window and they will be in the shower area. VERY nice work!
No discussion on those square wood dividers?
they are square
As always, excellent eye to detail and methodology for pristine execution 👌. You talked about the windows, but what about the lights - any unique product/light fixture or approach to support the steam environment?
Wet rated led cans and enclosures typically. Lots of manufacturers have them and can also be used in exterior applications.
Who makes the mirror and LED bars on the side of the mirror?
I'd love to re-do my bathroom like this. I'd have to take out another mortgage to pay for it though
gonna be lots jobs to replace glass
Very mint
Amazing craftsmanship!
Just a FYI, standard Kerdi membrane doesn't meet the vapor permeability requirements for steam showers, though many still use it.
You might want to purchase a roll of Kerdi-DS, its harder to work with and thicker,
but to me the piece of mind is worth the hassle when it comes to steam showers and their associated problems,
Have you used that window detail before in steam showers? Any issues on past projects?
I've been trying to find a way to integrate windows into steam showers and don't know any builders in my area that have done that
Love what you guys are doing there, and excited to see more of your work!
Wouldn’t putting the membrane over kerdi board meet the requirements? Kerdi board is water and steam proof.
Does Wedi System meet steam requirements??
Good job done... exactly like how I showed you 🤪
something about large format tiles over my head that doesnt sit well with me.. regardless of how well they are mortared and applied.. i just dont like the idea of something that can easily kill you if it fails and falls
Man, that’s great work. How does a homeowner find a builder/remodeler who actually cares about their work product like these dudes? So difficult these days.
Appreciate the kind words Brian. Thanks for watching!
Which fortified mud did you use to allow you to screed from 3/4 in to 1/8 in depth at the drain? The regular mud I’ve seen thus far requires a minimum of 3/4 depth at the drain…
Latricrete 371 i believe
The amount of paper / wood / plastics / foam in US homes is mind-boggling for us here in France or Russia… top-notch, super detailed work, as always at NS Builders, but I just wonder what happens to it all in 20, 50, 100 years?
( I sometimes have the impression Schluter sells more outside of Europe than inside 🤣)
Thanks for watching Anatoly! Fair question but I don't have the answer
@@NSBuilders - Thanks for sharing. That's a lot of filming / editing (speaking as a cinema guy).
Regarding Schluter, that was more of a spontaneous curiosity spoke out loud - I'll ask the local guys in January, we should be talking to them if schedule goes well.
@@mathman0101 - I also think the US cities would benefit from a combination of longer-term vision for construction (most buildings have been so temporary) and perfectionism / attention to detail (already present in guys like NS builders).
Prettier cities to match the national parks. 😉
@@mathman0101 The weather conditions you are describing are not happening in Boston at all lol. They occur more in the south-eastern US (NC, SC, FL, TX, etc.). They may have some storms from time to time in Boston but no hurricanes.
Just curious but wouldn’t having a tub bigger than the glass opening where the door will go a design flaw? Couldn’t the shower door have been made larger?
Is this possible to do in uk bathroom? Especially as most builders just pop a bath on floorboard which just leaks through the ceilings!
So how are we stopping the neighbors from looking in the windows from the outside?
