    Welcome to another episode of 'EASY & DREAMY' Guitar Chords. This time I show you how the music artist Grouper and the Johnny Marr of the band The Smiths use the Open D Tuning D A D F# A D on guitar for instant dreaminess. This video was powered by Skillshare. Literally what I've been doing for the past 5 years. The amazing thing about this type of tuning is that you can free your 3rd, 4th and pinky fingers and let them explore additional notes out of the standard major chords. Not only additional notes but also it enables doubling notes (same notes for multiple strings which create beautiful harmonics). I can't write any new material without alternate tunings anymore!

    Thanks Kenneth for this guitar tutorial. My two favourite guitars are, my Crafted in Japan, Jazzmaster. Upgraded with Lollar pickups, and my standard, Crafted in Japan, Lake Placid Blue Jaguar. Johnny Marr and Kevin Shields are my favourite guitarists by far. They're absolute geniuses.

    I just started playing guitar about 2 months ago, Also got into rock around 3 months before that and I never understood what the type of music I was listening to and now that I know its “showgaze” I’m in love because this whole time I thought everything was off standard tuning and it was very difficult to learn anything but this makes it so much easier to play guitar it’s like a shortcut lol

    I just checked out that new grouper album! This is super helpful to get your head out of scale boxes.
    I think Johnny marr said that „unlearning what you’re doing with tunings“ helps working with your ears only

    I like to tune D as 75/150/300, A as 112.5/225/450, and depending on whatever other notes I might use, 187.5 for an F#, 200 for G, and other more even intervals. Playing around with being “out of tune” can give interesting tones.

    Have you ever heard of a band called GIFT? They are still a fairly new band.
    The song Suite: Judy Blue Eyes is tuned DADDAD. So is the slide guitar in the song Freebird. So is the song Name by the goo goo dolls.

    Nice lesson. I'm a bass player and yet to play with tuning variations. Just happy to have chorus and flange. But I'm curious to see if Cocteau Twins or Autumn's Grey Solace use any of these techniques as well. But I do remember hearing that the original guitarist for the B-52s came up with several tunings for different songs. But I'm sure it's just a good excuse to buy more guitars.

    Check out Chris Whitley’s music. He died in 2009. He used some different tunings
    Check out Jeff Buckley’s music. He died in ‘98. He used some alternate tunings but it was the way he used the fretboard and the way he wrote songs that was really creative. And his voice.

    • @mooseyard
      @mooseyard 3 роки тому

      I believe DADGAD gives you a suspended chord with open strings or a bar, so it’s a bit more unsettling/ambiguous than the D major chord.
