    This video speaks to my exact concern when converting my 2012 Club Car DS from 48v lead acid to lithium ion batteries. I determined a 48V to 12V 20 amp converter would suite my 12v power needs and the inexpensive converter purchased did not have an ignition control wire. I measured the “little bit” of current always drawn as 20mA (0.02A) so to decide if a control relay was worth the effort, I calculated how long that small (but constant) discharge would take to Drain the battery. With a capacity of 60 amp hour, it would take roughly 3,000 hours or 125 days. I figured the cart will never go that long without use or charge during the summer months. During storage, the batteries have a disconnect so current drain is zero. Just my story why I never bothered to put in a relay.

    Thank you! I've been needing to do this for a while since I do see some battery drain over several days/a week. Didn't really feel like upgrading/dealing out my reducer. For some reason I was never able to truly grasp how to hook it all up until your explanations in this video. I ended up having a bad ground connection during the install that stumped me for about 30 mins, but I figured it out and now it's working like a charm. Thanks again.

      @@Jacks_ingenuity honestly, I cannot remember. Like I said, I've known about this solution for over a year, but figuring out how to connect it all up made my brain hurt so I didn't do it until this video explanation. I did it exactly the way he explains to do it in the video. I literally watched the video 1/2 dozen times noting what goes where and hooked it up the same. Like I said in my comment, I was initially stumped by it not working for me, but then figured out that I had a bad ground connection (I spliced it to an existing ground and the splice just didn't have a good connection). I would just go look at my cart for you, but unfortunately I did a really good install with wire management everything is well hidden in the battery compartment so I can't really tell what wire goes where anymore.

    Good video. I did exactly the same since my 36/12 volt converter draws 1/4 amp in standby mode. Remember to add a fuse on the plus power input wire. Some higher priced converters include an extra control wire to connect to the key on wire at the cart controller so you don't need the relay.

  • @trooper5157
    @trooper5157 3 місяці тому

    Good information and useful to know for those who have carts that could be impacted by this issue. Our cart is a new 105 amp lithium cart with a master power switch (battery cut off / power down switch, not just turning the ignition off switch). Remember, the inverter is only "on" when it has something pulling power / amps from it. If your headlights, speaker, or other accy is turned off, then there is no draw and thus the inverter isn't working and is effectively off. On our cart, we power everything off when not using it and, when we're not using the cart for a few days or more, we hit the master power switch and that turns off power at the battery. So it can be good to install a keyed power lead to your inverter on an older (lead acid battery powered) cart, its not at all needed on a more modern electric cart.

    I like the memory feature. I have a 2020 Cushman Hauler Pro 72v with a factory 72-12v converter for the lights, etc. I installed a radio and had to add a small 7ah SLA battery for my clock and presets. I isolated it with a relay so when the converter is off, the entire 12v bus wouldn't be powered from by backup battery and when the cart/converter are on, it charges my backup. I didn't have a 72 volt relay so i tapped into the 12v power from the Curtis controller. I knew the small current consumed by the relay would be fine. I also soldered a diode across the coil to protect the controller from the collapsing coil field. Was kinda involved so it would've been nice to have the memory function.

    Thanks very much, John, for another excellent tutorial. But I have an unexpected result after making the connections. Everything works as you describe, I even hear a click in the switch when the key is turned. What I did not expect, and do not understand, is that the reducer also works with the switch's white wire disconnected from B-. With it off the B- post, the whole system still works, though without the click sound. Lights are the only 12V accessory and are wired directly from the reducer's yellow, and illuminate only with the key on. I also get a 12V reading from the light wire's in line fuse only when key is on. Any sage idea how this can be? The only other possibly relevant information is I have the reducer's negative out going to B-. I know this is not strictly correct, but I see no light negative wire. Thanks in advance!

    Sorry to resurrect with another late comment, but I only recently made this discovery myself -- although this mod definitely helps reduce a relatively small amount of battery discharge, the main benefit of this mod comes from like accidentally leaving the headlights on (or some prankster turning them on for you while the cart is sitting parked, etc.). However, the reducer by itself is just not that much of a drain on the battery. What actually is a significant drain on the battery (at least for Club Car Precedents) is the stock controller. When my carts sits idle for a week, I'll lose 10% or even more of the charge. However, when I recently went on a 3-week vacation on a whim I flicked the switch to put the cart in tow mode. When I got back from vacation the cart charge had only gone down 5-6%, which is just about normal self discharge for lead acid batteries in a month. Apparently even with the key in the off position, the stock controller is still doing a lot of things, including the roll-away alarm/braking feature, etc., which clearly takes a lot of power. So, if you don't use your CCP (with stock controller) very often, the best thing you can do to help with idle discharge of the batteries is to flick that tow mode switch on, which completely turns off the controller (or if not entirely, then mostly turns it off). Not sure if this is the same or similar with EZGO, Yamaha, etc., but it's definitely the case with Club Car.

Stopped using my cart around November and tried using it around late February. Here in Illinois we can’t use them during that time as it is too cold to golf. I leave it plugged in to my charger, which also has a trickle charge it runs periodically. When I went to use it I could barely go 9 holes. The batteries are now only a year old. @fertertainment: Late comment, but question about Relay and the Blue Converter (w/ constant blue 12v for radio memory). Since the Relay's "blue-wire" has power ("continuity") when key is off, how is this any different then the Converter's ("blue model") constant power "blue wire" (for radio memory)? Is the parasitic drawl only happening when the converter is converting the constant blue wire to 12v (from 48v), where the Relay has no parasatic drawl since its not converting, but only passing/diverting the power (48v "continutiy") to its blue wire when key is off? Thanks in advance.

    • @Fentertainment
      @Fentertainment  6 місяців тому +1

      No comment is ever too late. On a relay it was have 5 terminals. 85 & 86 is to power the coil. 87 = NO, 87a = NC and 30 is common. 30 has continuity between 87a when no power is being applied to 85 & 86. Since we didnt use 87a then there is no power being connected to anything (basically the switch is off). When power is connected to 85&86 then 30 and 87 have continuity (basically the switch is on). Continuity means pass through but doesnt mean power. When a 5 wire dc converter like the blue one is being used. Even though its technically off when the cart is off, the converter is still converting pack voltage to 12v and also delivering 12v memory to the radio. Its still working when you arent on the cart. You dont have to do it this way, you could do it the original way from the instructions but by utilizing a relay will result in the converter only powering on when the key is turned on.

    • @Fentertainment
      @Fentertainment  6 місяців тому +1

      The relay is powering down the converter when the key is off and powering it on when the key is on. No need for it to converter 48v to 12v when you are working, sleeping or away from the cart. Yes, the converter is still converting 48v to 12v when the cart is off and the blue memory wire still has power available on it. Its not supplying the full 30 amps but its still delivering power.

    6:41 you mention yellow wire from the DC converter (12v+) to the relay red wire 87. Perhaps it’s as simple as a color coding difference between the product you’re looking at and the one I’m looking at on Amazon. The one I’m looking at, the yellow wire is the output12V+, not the 48V+. Wouldn’t you want to be switching to 48V+ input?

    I cannot figure out what you did with the red and black cable from the converter. It would be helpful if you very simply showed the exact mapping from wire to wire in a single screen. The wires were below the battery, so you couldn’t determine which was coming from the converter and which was from the positive terminal. I have the relay installed in the way I thought you described, but it functions exactly like it did before the relay. Power with key off. I appreciate your understanding of these concepts, but it would be helpful to very clearly summarize the wiring rather than going deep on continuity, coils, etc. I don’t need to know why. Just what color from the converter goes to which color of the relay. Then you can go deep on everything else. “This right here like that going to there like that” when you can’t see the wires is not particularly helpful.

    • @charnois11
      @charnois11 6 місяців тому

      The red and black are a normally open switch.The coil changes the switch to normally closed. Like a light switch. So break the hot wire and connect red to + battery and black to + of your power input to your voltage converter.

    Hey bud, I like your videos but I need to make a correction to your statement that a DC converter draws power. If you wire in a DC converter with nothing on the 12vt side, it will Not draw power. If you connect a fan on the 12vt side with the fan switch off, it will not draw power. If you connect the fan and turn it on, it Will draw power. So your statement that it Always draws power is false.

    • @curtw8827
      @curtw8827 8 місяців тому +1

      Incorrect, my converter draws 1/4 amp in standby just being connected. This will drain the battery. I installed a relay to disconnect the plus 36v power lead that switches on and off with the key.
