  • I wanted a solar heater on my house. So I decided to make one as cheaply as I could. Works great but doesn't look great.
    Tools for this build
    Heat gun for shaping PVC, This is a must have tool for me
    amzn.to/33zCMLC
    Meat thermometer, for more than just meat.

    The concept is great, much room for improvement. Tighter turns, enclosed with mat black backing.

    Hilarious and works. Free heat. Proof of concept. Since you already have the 100 feet I'd make a huge insulated box 8 feet wide and 6 feet tall and serpentine it inside and plumb it the way you got it there. Good job!

    Absolutely hilarious that it works even though its only half built. If you put that in a somewhat sealed box, you'll have way more heat, and you'll need to put it on a switch to cut in and out.
    Well done! Makes me realize even I could build one!

    If you put this inside of a glass print box, somehow you will raise the heat probably. Great build!!!!

    Awesome! I’ll have to make one for my off grid cabin! If I ever build an off grid cabin…on the land I haven’t purchased yet.🤷‍♂️

    Yup. Build a box around it and cover that with thick greenhouse plastic. Should double the output.

    Perhaps a smaller diameter but longer hose would give more surface area to transfer heat, Come to think, I have a roll out behind the water tank. Hmmm.

    Box that system in with a glass or plexiglass panel, maximize heat sink by painting inside of box flat black and you'll have a nice free heat source.

      I'll let you know how it turns out in a few days . Installing 3 solar air heaters and I'm going to install a section of duct pipe and a fan to draw heat down that gets trapped under the rafters inside the garage. Should work pretty well

      Funny thing at least here in Sweden is solar panels costs about the same as sheets of plexiglass. Though there's transparent roof sheets that are more cost effective. But I'd just go for solar panels here, and get the waste heat from the back of them to preheat water.

    Brilliant video. Really good explanation and scientific too so we can see what the actual benefits are. That video got you +1 sub.

    Instead of one spiral, put two next to each other, sibe by side, so that the air makes a U-turn in the middle of the spiral and returns inside along the second spiral. You can pump warm indoor air into the spiral and get it back even warmer.

    • @DirtyShopDIY
      @DirtyShopDIY  Рік тому +1

      Yes for sure. Surface area is everything. This was just a crude proof of concept.

      That makes sense. also, seems like it would be more efficient to bring the warm air in at a lower level because that is where the human bodies will be and the heat will naturally rise, so you want the warm air to rise past your bodies to impart it's heat. having an air intake at a lower colder area of the room to pull the indoor cooler floor air in to warm in the sun and pump out even warmer air at body level. I hope that makes sense.

    Yours is the first ones I've seen that uses this pipe now I know what to do with my pipe and no you don't need to pay money for it jusr watch the free adds and construction sites jusr after foundation is burried there's usually some leftover just ask the site forperson if there's leftover usually they'll let you have it I've got about 100 feet I've collected was planning on another project but I like your idea and I can do the other project without it Ive seen another one using dryer vent hose

    20 degree difference in temp is not bad at face value but one needs to know the CFM of the fan to really understand the effectiveness of the heater. For Example blasting In 150cfm will take quite a bit longer to hear the house than 450. And yes it is ugly. Place the t staqt not in the room but in the duct itself. A 10 dollar variable speed computer fan controller works wonders on my solar air heater to control the out put. It actually slows the fan down when there is clouds and speeds up again when they are gone lol

    Maybe put it on the roof - so you can't see it.

    I agree, if you were to wrap it in plastic,it would improve the performance. The plastic won't make it any more uglier than it already is. LOL. Disposable aluminum pie plates from the dollar store, painted black also work well

    Anything these days to cut the corporations out
    Maybe run that fan out of a small solar panel next to the heated tube
    Then it would be a Net Zero System

    • @DirtyShopDIY
      @DirtyShopDIY  2 роки тому +6

      A small solar panel was one of my first ideas actually. The best part would be that It would only run when the sun was on it. Sort of self regulating.

      @@DirtyShopDIY I did something like that on my in-window solar heater:
      ua-cam.com/video/fFbrGABpmuQ/v-deo.html
      My 5W panel wasn't enough to power my fans directly but works fine to turn a relay on and off.

      Thought about that, I worry about condensation causing mold in the pipe. It would need to be smooth wall with a slope so water would drain out.

    The reason this collector is so ugly is because it is so BIG! The reason that it is so big is because it is so inefficient! With the amount of fan power you must be using to blow air through 50 feat of corrugated plastic pipe, blowing through a continuous bend, all of which according to fluid flow dynamics, is probably more costly than any heating benefit! This is a phenomenal waste of everything...
