A little rule of thumb in the Smith System of defensive driving - "leave yourself an out" - which pretty means that you want to be able to be able to leave room on all sides of your vehicle in case you need the cushion. I admit that I don't do it all the time, but that is the reasoning, really...
Gives you an out as well as saves you liability if you’re rear-ended. A larger gap means more room to be pushed if hit from behind, less likely to hit and damage the car in front of you. I was always taught here in Ontario, Canada that you should always stop where you can see the tires under the car in front of you plus some road.
Also MCI Coaches have a distance beeper that goes off if you get to close I’m not even sure how to turn it off honestly and I’m not sure you can and you probably shouldn’t anyways Little advice from a motorcoach operator

The reason is that if the car breaks down in front of him he needs to have himself enough room to maneuver around the car
It’s a precautionary measure in case the vehicle in front breaks down we know we have enough room to make the swing and clear it
