To anyone curious the Spaniards spirit at the beginning says this. "Come all to listen. To a story of pain. Of rage and vengeance. Legs, arms and voodoo. Of how a man once. Searching himself found. His damnation and his end. And this is his song." (Rough translation, I can't help with the Japanese sorry).
I lost a couple of friends basically when I discovered this song. Maybe that's why it touches me personally. One took his own life and the other got ran over by his excavator not even a week apart. "Though they slumber in the darkness they are always by our side."
I am at a loss for words seeing a funny joke song from an album past being followed up by an epic tale of revenge and regret and loss. This is everyone I want from Alestorm. Truly inspirational.
Okay, making a prediction: on their next album they will be doing Wooden Leg Part 7... and refer to events that happened in Parts 4 through 6 as though we are completely familiar with those events That... or they do a prequel to Wooden Leg about the parents of the person with the Wooden Leg and how they met, fell in love, married and conceived of the child who would grow up to be the subject of Wooden Leg
Just rename parts 1-3 to 4-6, then make the prequels and then the sequels to the first trilogy, sell the rights to Disney and call the saga Limb Wars. May the wood be with you.
I do not believe I am honestly writing this, but this is one of the most beautiful and emotional songs I ever heard. Thank you, Alestorm ❤ Though I am secretly hoping for at least a part 4 revival 🤣
Part 4. The protagonist claws (or rather, pokes) his way out of Hell, wooden arms and legs still ablaze with the underworld's unquenchable fires, vowing to exact revenge on the spirits of both the Spaniard and Samurai.
🎶 So let's drink, through the night to our friends who have died. Though they slumber in the Shadows, they are always by our side. 🎶 Beautiful I love everything Alestorm has done and this was the best song to end this album with

If you are a native speaker of Spanish or Japanese, then feel free to offer corrections. I didn't do the translations. So I won't get mad.
Japanese translation does sound very google translate-y especially on the 4th verse, translators are usually not too great at translating Japanese Here's what I would suggest as a translation (but I'm not good enough at English to put it in a nice poetic way, and I'm not a native Japanese speaker, just someone who's been learning it for years and quite some time there) : Listen to this story About misfortune and sadness After suffering I arrived at a tavern Where they only serve Strong Zero I sleep here like a falling flower (Strong Zero is a Japanese brand of alcohol that's like, idk, 9° beer but it's not really beer it's unidentified alcohol with tastes of lemon, cola, or stuff like this, and also a reference to the part 2 when "the spirit living in the arm that [he] stole bought 108 cans of Strong Zero and forced him to drink it all)
Translation of Japanese lyrics made by native Japanese speakers in English is very difficult for native Japanese speakers too. Probably Japanese Lyrics are words of the spirit living in the arm that [he] stole. So It’s little bit better to change [ I ] to [he] . My translation (based @wxcvbndu51 ) : Listen to [his] story About misfortune and sadness After suffering [he] arrived at a tavern Strong Zero show [him] the LAST dream. [He] sleeps here like a falling flower Lyrics about Strong Zero is very high-context. We drink Strong Zero to forgot bad thing , to escape every thing, to feel heavenly. Maybe [He] wanted to leave his deadly pain as soon as possible. Additionally the quantity of cans 108 [he] had drunk means that [he] was forced having all of Buddhist karma (like seven deadly sins), just I think.
Nope. This is the end of the story! In part 1, the pirate loses BOTH his legs in a sea battle against the Spanish Armada and his arms in a Samurai attack. Part 2 is the tale of revenge where he murders both the Samurai and Spaniard before being cursed and committing suicide. This is the third and sadly final part, where the pirate is laid to rest.
I wasn't prepared to listen to an Alestorm song and feel...feelings...great job guys! It's in loop for three days now 😆 Best song in the album, in my opinion.
Rough translation of the Japanese part is something like: Listen to a guy's wounds and sorrow After much suffering I arrived at a tavern Strong Zero (Japanese brand of alcoholic drink), fleeting dream like a falling flower, I sleep here Feel free to correct, my Japanese isn't too great
Can't wait for part IV! I got the album today, and I was leafing through the booklet while I was ripping the first CD (and listening to Wind Rose - Warfront that also came in the mail) when I read the title! I laughed hard, I couldn't wait for it. I also loved the earnatomy page, very informative.
Perhaps the most emotional song they've ever written, and the added use of Spanish and Japanese to make the callback to earlier songs unmistakably clear is beautiful.
i always crave for 1 slow song on your albums and yesssssssssssssssss this is it.. you guys became my fav band when black sails at midnight came out and i was thinking.. i wish they would do a somber slow song.. next song on the album was to the end of our days.. those vibes repeated with this.
The spanish and japanese lyrics were not necessary, but Alestorm decided to go with that and because of that, the song is perfect. I really appreciate those details. They appreciate the languages of the world.
Pure fucking poetry. 10/10 I kept humming it for a whole week on my scuba diving liveaboard. Especially at night when I was gazing at the starry sky on the sundeck with a cold beer in my hand. Sorry, slice of life.
The Spanish guy would control his body and over-eat. (like an eating addiction) The Japanese guy would control his body and drank a lot of beer. (Alcoholism?) And in the end. He freaking committed suicide!? Are the wooden leg songs about eating and drinking disorders that lead to the deaths of someone they knew!? And the wooden leg is representative of trauma? In which he tried to fix with food and alcohol!? Holy sh(beep)
I love this song so much. It touches me personally and I honestly don't even know why. I understand the Spanish parts, gonna figure out the Japanese parts somehow. But...."in the darkness and the shadows is where I lay my head!"
"In the darkness and the silence is where I lay my head." - His head is made of wood and he is under a voodoo curse, so by this logic, he now walks the world and sails the seas headless. The tale continues, lads!
Part 4 should be about the descendants of these 3 men fighting each other using the ghosts of their ancestors as their stands. Part 5 should be about them joining forces to fight a fleet of zombie pirates.
