In a film with so many superb actors playing brilliantly, Daniel Day Lewis simply steals the film. He nailed the character of Cecil so perfectly that 35 years on I still marvel at it. This was the first film I ever saw him in, and what an introduction it was.
Cecil is a very quirky character. Rather strange and unintentionally hilarious. He's played with comedic brilliance by Daniel Day Lewis who I don't really associate with comedies so it was refreshing to see. I cannot see him and not think "I drink your milkshake!" Funny bit of information, James Ivory said Hugh Grant had auditioned for the role of Cecil. But Ivory found him too good-looking to play the character buy they remembered him for Clive Durham. Grant who is known for comedies played a serious role in Maurice. So the reversal of roles.
What a great movie! I can watch it over again and again and still enjoy it. I don't think I can name another movie with that many talents! Maggie Smith, Denholm Elliott, Judie Dench, Simon Callow, Daniel Day-Lewis, Helena Bonham Carter, Julian Sands, Rupert Grave... Oh and the soundtrack. And of course, James Ivory and Ismail Merchant would never disappointed us!
@@awaitthegroom, I agree. I love them both equally. With cast like Emma Thompson, Helena Bonham Carter, Anthony Hopkins, Vanessa Redgrave, Samuel West, James Wilby... I love the scene of Samuel West as Leonard Bast walking in the bluebells forest.
I love this film! Helena's beautiful face and wonderful hair and that kiss, I watched it so many times when I was a younger woman. Sigh! Just so romantic ♡
I purchased this movie on a whim and by accident as it was paired with a movie called Mansfield Park [I am a Jane Austen fan]. Little did I know that this will be one of my all time favourite movies. The first character I recognized was George Emerson as I'm a huge fan of Rose Red lol. So, that was a funny coincidence. Cecil Vyse though, is by far, my fav character lmao! Fun fact: A segment of this film was featured on Gimore Girls.
Daniel Day Lewis- actor of all time- not like Hugh Grant and those who are the same in every film. Daniel goes in and out of character with never the same characteristics- a timeless actor of the greatest skills.
Amazingly wonderful to see Uccello's left panel of the "Battle of San Romano" in this movie, although it appears larger than its actual size: 6 ft high by 10.5 ft wide. (2:20)
Ugh, they should have had Rupert Graves star in some more prominent role during this period like an 80s version of Dorian Gray. He is so gorgeous with the floppy hair!!!
Daniel Day Lewis plays an wimp; however the power of his body and immense presence can’t be cloaked. You can see what’s coming in There Shall Be Blood and others.
In this film besides the actor Daniel Day Lewis, there is another great actor that l'm a fan and l admire a lot, he's also the actor Julian sands this film made the Meeting of there two sensational actors.
I wish I was born in the 19th century. But technology... But damn they actually made their hair back then and now the guys in my school have noodle hair...

The way Cecil sniffs and says " a villa " gets me every time lol.

@@rumblefish9 he is not really meant to be 'quirkt'y as opposed tot he opposite
@@mareksicinski3726 he is kind of quirky in a sense that he's odd. I would even consider him a dandy which at that time was a peculiar kind of man.

Really superb actors, and among them Helena stole the movie. She is like a diamond among them
The perfect upper class British accent
"Do you know you are a Leonardo, smiling at things beyond our ken?"
He's such a funny & amusing character
I love Freddiie. I would have loved to have had a brother like Freddie.
