- The first of a three part series to show you how to build a repeating bait trap so that you can catch nuisance english house sparrows. English house sparrows are an introduced species that have decimated the populations of some of north america's native songbirds.
Hi, thanks for the info, to anyone against trapping English sparrows ,you should know they are not native, and they chase off and kill blue birds, finches, and other small birds, they break the eggs and toss out their babies, then take over their nest. A few years ago we had many blue birds and gold finches and a few English sparrows. This year we have no bluebirds, and I have only seen 3 goldfinches and there is mostly English sparrows at our feeders. I didn’t know what had happened. I began to research why and discovered it was the English sparrows. When I checked the bluebird boxes,sure enough they were all filled with the sparrows. I have always loved to watch the birds but I think it would be terrible to lose our beautiful finches and bluebirds to these aggressive mean birds. So I will build a box, and I will turn out any good birds I accidentally catch. Again thanks for the info, people who know birds will be glad to have it.
We built our box last week, based on your video. We caught 10 sparrows the first 2 hours it was put out! The next day, it was 16! Thanks!
It's a nice trap ,but it doesn't work.I tried it and the birds jump from the outside platform right to the seed platform.They don't even step on the tilting platform.
I built one nearly identical to this one and it didn't work.
@sandpiper22 try bat houses - bats need them and do a better job.

To the guy who wrote that this video should be removed... Why is everything about money, the reason why this very nice gentleman uploaded this video is for the preservation of our native bird species, his idea was not to make money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I made a trap like yours, I haven't been able to attract sparrows into the trap. I've tried bird seed and bread no luck. Any advice?
That explains why the 2nd amendment is still in place. Still fighting the English and loosing.
Just wanted to thank you for the great instruction videos. I made one of these yesterday and today, I caught a male and female. It works great!
They are prolific and aggressive birds that thrive at the expense of small native birds.
Purple martins and other birds like blue birds (and any bird using a nest box) can be kicked out of their nest, babies and all, or left in pieces by these nasty critters.
They can form a nest colony in your attic or near where you eat and piles of their droppings, feathers, mites and other stuff can cause great harm and make you sick.

+1a2b3c4dx1 Update: I cut a slot in the top of the hardware cloth the width of the trap. This allows me to drop a board down and divide the trap in two sections, in order to release native birds more easily without risking escape of HOSP.

How to you make the plexiglas trap door? You said you use staples. Do you just staple it in there and let it operate light a tight flap, or do you you only partially seat the staple, putting it in vertically, so it acts like a hinge, much like the D rings on a 3 ring binder allow the pages to turn. I'm wondering if having it stapled tight at the top is too rigid.

This trap works really well with the sturdy pvc lift. The trap got some house sparrows, but mostly contained song birds and some greyish finch, what should be put in the bait to catch mainly house sparrows? I placed sunflower seeds and a bit of bird feed that are for parakeets. What should be there to get mainly house sparrows? Thanks again.
I built this trap as you said, But I used green coated wire, and I have not caught one yet, Either the sparrows are smart, Or the color spooks them, I use the same suet they have been eating on and also have cracked corn on the inside tray - - Nothing - - - Yet.

U have to put a trap where u see lots of sparrow's go eg. next to a tree or on top of a shed or something like that hope it helps :)
Ps. They are one of very few birds that are not illegal to kill.
Just built a sparrow trap following this video. My doesn't look pretty since I did it with scrap wood. If it works, maybe I'll get some decent wood and build a pretty one!
Furthermore, I was told by the creator of this trap that I need a sparrow inside for the trap to work. OK, how do I catch the first sparrow to put inside???

I'm not talking about the House Sparrows, I'm talking about the incidentals that you catch, the native sparrows.
@kennnmoran - I like your mechanism very much. Way to think out of the box!!! The cans are economical but I would also test with some hardware cloth cylinders. I think the repeating sparrow trap is a great idea but it needs improvements such as yours. Nice job.
Chuck, I am having that same issue. I have moved it all around my properly and haven't had any sparrows even show any interest in it. On the ground, on a stand and mounted to the wall.
I just built one of these in Australia. Baited it with bread and for two days, nothing. Then I get up today and it has two sparrows in it. thanks for sharing your design.

In which countries are sparrows an invasive species?
Not ALL sparrows. Specifically the "English" or "house" sparrows which were introduced from Europe many years ago. Very aggressive and will occupy tree cavities and houses built for native birds, like blue birds. They will kill baby birds, and sometimes adults, and build their nests right on top of the carcasses.

How to you avoid catching native sparrows?
A message to all: if you live in an urban area - don't waste time building this. Sparrows look at it with a genuine suspicion and only eat from the platform protruding outwards. Urban sparrows are extremely cautious and do not enter anything with a closed top. I built a very good version of this trap, sparing no efforts or materials, only to watch how sparrows avoid it for weeks and eat from the oitside platform only. Absolutely useless.
What would the purpose be of sparrow traps? What do you do with the sparrows after you trap them?
You can kill them humanely if it's legal in your state, or some zoos/wildlife rehaps will take them to feed them to their raptors and/or snakes. Relocating them is NOT effective.
And remember, this is solely for English/House sparrows which are invasive in this country.

Simpler than it looks!
No problem :)
Why? Because some of us have devoted time and our money - lots of money - to coming up with better ways to do EXACTLY what you are saying - help native birds. We don't ask for much but some small payment to basically cover our costs. And if you feel like building something go make a Pinewood derby car. Because if you make a trap wrong you can and will injure native birds.
I am pretty sure that is illegal. Native sparrows are protected under the migratory bird act and you must possess a license to handle them.
