Four yeara ago I made 10 nest houses for sparrows and/ or chicka dees, etc -- small birds. I made mine out of cedar fence wood, which is about 5/8 thick and are glued and nailed together. One side swings up open to clean out. It has a small dowel to act as a perch below the opening. I got the plans from a bird house book. Each year I have beween 5 and 8 momma birds using them. I had a tray of molten bees wax for water proofing the top and sides. It is not necessary to coat the insides. It's a lot of fun sitting in a chair, watching the little birds at home doing bird stuff. And a short PS here -- I keep bees and do NOT poison flowers of any kind or kill insects that the birds need for food. Curses to all you Monsanto product users. Bob in Montana, where it is finally looking like spring....
@@andrewj99 pine boards typicically have more turpines than other wood species. Cedar has a smell that is unmistakable. But if one is worried about the aroma, store it in an unheated ( or uncooled) shed for 6 to 12 months. Fence boards from Home Depot can be wet from a mill and should be seasoned anyway so they can shrink to final width which will be around 5 1/2". The fence boards that I used were extras from someone's fence project. There was no smell except from being cut. Then I heated up a tray of bees wax to coat the outside before I nailed it together. These little nest boxes should last 10 years without falling apart and should never rot away. Pine will require a paint job every so many years. When I was a beekeeper, I had to paint my pine hive boxes about every 3 or 4 years. Bob
Thanks Bob, for all the great info! We need more support for our environment, and easier ways to stay natural without the chemicals they put in everything, mold and mildew killers in paint, the wax is a great alternative! Soaked into a fabric, that gives me some ideas! Oh, the knowledge we have lost!

THAT'S A TOP NOTCH BIRDHOUSE. OBVIOUSLY A LOT OF TIME AND THOUGHT THAT YOU PUT INTO IT INCLUDING THE COPPER CROWN ON TOP. WELL DONE MELANIE, THANKS FOR SHARING. 🇺🇸✌️👍🏻
Thank you for letting me know that you appreciate what I am doing. You can see it’s a lot of work. Thanks for liking and subscribing. It really helps my ratings in UA-cam.
That was really entertaining to watch. I am an engineer who is used to exact sizes and precise dimensions and admittedly I was sceptical at the beginning but was pleasantly surprised at the end result. Cheers Hendrik.
Nice job! I've made few for the yard here. The copper roof reminded me of a trick I've used. I take the thin tall aluminum cans (like from ice tea), cut the ends off, cut the length, then unroll it flat. I cut it into strips 1/4" wider than my steel ruler. I use the ruler as a form to bend up a 1/8" lip along each side, forming a shallow tray. I staple these next to each other on the roof. A piece without the lips bent in the center makes a ridge cap. When painted, it makes a fair approximation of metal roofing. I also tried leaving the can flat and unpainted as a sort of tribute to the old "Chew Mail Pouch Tobacco" barns. It faded too much though.
As a builder may I offer a few tips. You may benefit from doing pre - assembly on many of these parts - ie use a assembly line approach - make 20 of each board/batten or the walks - then you are just doing a final assembly. This of course is only a suggestion and if you enjoy making unique each time then I understand. You make great videos and I get little tips from your work. Cheers!
Thanks! Unique each time is a perfect description for 99% of the things that I make. Thanks for liking, sharing and Subscribing. It helps with UA-cam's algorithms!
Nice video. Depending where the box is to be placed it is usually best to leave off the Perspex. The whole idea for nesting in a tree or box is that it is safe and birds especially when egg laying can be scared and permanently leave the eggs. Anything from other birds or blown up items in the air can spook them if they can see outside. Best left in the dark and cosy.
Similar to what is called battenboard and you did a wonderful job , looks really nice ! Couple tips ...work from the top down making your pieces as long as possible, less chance of leaks . Any overhang from the roof is a major plus . Any leak down the road needs to be avoided . 35 yrs. of framing custom homes has taught me that much . I'm not being critical , I hope you know that . Beautiful work ! Looking forward to your upcoming videos.
I have personally watched this several times the last couple of years. I can't get enough so I keep coming back . There's just something so relaxing about watching you create a work of art . It makes me wish I was there by your side building one along side of you .
I must agree! You have a soothing voice and a great way of editing your videos! The slight sound of the mitre saw in the background when you are showing something that has been cut is, frankly, endearing LOL, I sound crazy but I’m loving it and I’ve liked and subscribed! I’ll share too🥳
The joy of seeing a family of bluebirds move into one of the houses I built is satisfying. The western bluebird male's vibrant shade of blue is breathtaking....birds don't need a perch and in fact it makes it easier for predators to access the nestlings, though your bamboo is a great deterrent. The birds just hold onto to the hole to look around or peek out when inside which is very cute. You have some whimsical designs. I'm not sure that most birds will like having window, though. Cavity nesters usually prefer holes in trees that are dark and secure.
I really enjoyed watching you build this house. I’m 64 yrs old and need something to make extra money when I retire.. I my build a few houses and see if they will sale. Great video my friend.
Watching you work is so relaxing. When I watch woodworking channels I usually do it for straight info, I usually watch “bigstackD” or “post10” to relax but I have to add your channel into both categories now. I love bird houses and I’m teaching my 11 year old daughter to build one. I have to show her this for the advanced stages. Thank you for posting this. She is building a basic rectangular, slant roof style one now. She wanted to put shingles on it so we are using popsicle sticks ends as shingles.
Very nice! Two things I would have done different: I would have run a batten horizontally along the end grain edge of the removeable bottom piece of the birdhouse, (on both sides) and butted the others up against it. I would have also made that bottom piece about a quarter of an inch longer on each side so that the bottom of the plexiglass had something to rest on.
A suggestion:before assembling, brush on a coat or two of Thompson’s Water Seal, on both sides. Helps protect bird house from deteriorating in wet climes. Polyacrylic water based varnish only eventually will peel off, leaving wood unprotected.
I think you are very talented. I love how every house is different and admire you for your daring use of colour and materials. Hmm, now i am thinking I could maybe do something like this …. Thank you for the video.
It’s interesting that you mention that because people wonder why I charge what I charge for these bird houses and there you have it. Like what you said the details take time and let’s not forget all the sanding that happens after it’s cut. Thank you so much for being an observant viewer and commenting! Thanks for subscribing liking and sharing!!!

This is really a very unique birdhouse. I love the idea and the finished product. As a beginner myself I have a couple questions? Should it have ventilation and drainage holes? Are any of the finishes or glues toxic to birds? What type of birds does this attract? Does the plexiglas warp, yellow or soften in sunlight? Do you have a measured plan for this house? How do you hang or mount it when finished?
Hi and thanks! I am not a bird expert but rather a wood worker and artist. But some people have lots to say about the designs and builds of bird houses and have made several comments that include answers to your questions. These are my thoughts: I think the very structure of my birdhouses have ventilation with no extra holes, they are not air tight. As for glues and finishes once dry they are not toxic. Some say the hole size is relevant to the type of bird that uses the house, I think that the bird type is relevant to the type of birds you have in your area which depends on the type of climate, food and safety in your area. Plexiglass does not wrap or soften and you can buy glass that has a UV anti fog and anti yellowing quality, depends on what you want to spend. I always tell people that I am an artist first and learned to build through experience and observation. There are no plans so I move through a build starting with an architectural design in my mind. As for hanging, I instruct people to sit them on a post that is on a secluded porch under cover. This way you can watch the babies grow. The presence of dogs and children may not attach birds. Some like to hang them from a beam under the roof structure of a porch, you can attach and eye hook to the top of the birdhouse as long as you have built in a strong ridge beam. Hope this answers your questions. Thanks for watching and subscribing!
I love making bird houses and feeders, and I am lucky in that I have a well-appointed Woodshop to do this in. I love your board and batten house. It is so cute. The one suggestion I would have would be to create cross-ventilation, so the little birdies don't get overheated. I found the easiest way to do this is to cut the sides slightly shorter than necessary, and leaving the gap underneath the roof overhangs. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the suggestion. Please know these bird houses are not airtight, that is for sure. I guess those things don’t show up in the video, but there is an evaluation and clean out and a few other things that are more hidden I suppose. Thanks for liking sharing and subscribing.
I love your bird house. I also love all the unusual ones that you showed at the end of your video, they were very beautiful. The ones you are going to make will be lovely too. I’ve subscribed to your channel and I’m looking forward to many more videos from you Melanie. TFS with everyone. Please enjoy your week.
Great job 👍👍you show real craftwomanship and I like the creative little things you added to it. Don't know what you charge for them, but I would say worth every penny. Thanks for sharing.
Pleasure to see your handiwork I am a professional Woodworker and Maintenance Carpenter. Will be able retire any time , but I am at the top of my earning potential and don’t really want to lol. Do you find bird boxes a good market for you ? Seems like. fun to design and a reasonable to build. David
Looks very well put together. The only draw back is whether it so airtight that it might get too warm inside and the chicks will suffocate. I usually just put together boards and leave a small triangle at the top and the sides not too tight so as to get a small amount of air through the house. Not criticism just an fyi. Looks good.
Truly enjoyed your creativity! Saw it as much therapeutic fun as a money maker. Unfortunately for me, my previous job as a production Mgr mind kicked in and I had a couple of thousand produced in a week. Blew the whole concept of enjoyment.
That’s funny the one thing I am not is a manufacture, although some people think I should be that way I could never do that. For me it’s all about the art. Thanks for giving a comment and sharing and liking and subscribing it helps with the UA-cam algorithms.
I recommend you get an oscillating tool for some of your cuts. It replaces chisels and other cutting tools and you can get them with a triangle shaped sanding attachment that's very handy. You might need to set up a rest of some sort for your arms to hold it steady, but I make nice cuts with ours a lot remodeling old houses. You could use it instead of the hand saw you tried on the oak, for cutting little trim pieces. I would definitely want one for making bird houses.
That really is lovely but the one thig I would comment on is the order in which you put the various sealing layer on. E.g. I would mark where the 'front of house' battens go, then pop on the dark stain then pop the battens on in place. Note not to pait where you need to use your various glues of course. I would also consider putting at least one level of polyurethane (for the outside only!) on before assembly then the copper top and then finish off as you have. But what a lovely set of birdhouses you make... beautiful indeed.
This may make some people angry but here goes. I am an artist first so subsequent to creating is construction, assembly and craft. When I create it happens one step at a time with not a great deal of insight to techniqic. Not all of things that I make follow this pattern. For example when I create table or chair. those need to follow a certain pattern like the height for example. Us artists look at things differently than technicians.
@@I-build-crafts 😂😂 your art is absolutely fine, in fact from what I see, absolutely lovely! But just popping the painting stage at the correct point would be a very logical step and help with the longevity of your art too... spot the higher price-value opportunity! 😉😉 Anyway, I look forward to picking up on more of your art sooner than later. Lovely stuff...
Thanks Tom I really appreciate you commenting and also liking what I’m making it means so much to me. If you haven’t already please subscribe that is another huge thing for the algorithms with UA-cam!!!
beautiful design on this birdhouse love all the details. i'm intrigued with that boat glue that you mention, will love to buy it and use that on my garden railroad, I build the houses and all details with my grandkids, now I have another idea tyo build with them, thank you so much!!!
I just want to add incase you haven't read the other comments that epoxy is the strongest glue that I have ever used but if you've used it you know can be messy.
The best glue I’ve used for those kinds of project has gorilla glue. It’s impervious to water and glue wood to block walls with gorilla wood. We can’t do another woods and gorilla was not that expensive spot six dollars a bottle.
Amazing work, one video I watched suggested carving grooves Into the Interior of the box to give the birds a grip when climbing out , I'm not sure if you did that apologies if I missed it.. Beautifully crafted pieces
Thank you for your response I hope you one day create a business where your birdhouses are available for purchase outside N Carolina You do beautiful amazing work

I have started making some nest boxes for wood ducks and bluebirds. I have nothing as nice and creative as yours. Thanks for sharing. I would also like to know more information on the marine hot glue. Take care and keep up your fine creative work.
Hi Melanie, I really enjoyed your video and you do beautiful work. I found myself clenching my teeth a few times as it seemed that your hands came very close to the blades of your saws. My Dad lost a fingertip once when a knot in the wood pulled his hand into the blade. I realise that you are working with smaller pieces so, it’s not easy to keep hands away. It’s just an observation, not to be critical. A very interesting demo!
I appreciate any thoughts and comments other viewers learn from comments. I am very careful but accidentals do happen. I have been blessed to not have had any severe problems. I am glad you enjoyed my video please like and subscribe and share. It really helps me continue to make art and videos.
You are totally Awesome, the detail, the love you put in these. I enjoyed this video so much. Thankyou for all the information and May God Bless You Richly❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for liking and subscribing. I will continue to make more interesting projects. I am in the process of making small birdhouse that are not as detailed but are more affordable.
For anyone making birdhouses. Birds don't need a perch at the opening of the house. A perch can actually allow predators, like snakes, to enter the birdhouse.
Hi Paul, prices vary and depend on many factors. The one with the plexiglass may be around $175 - $200. But it depends on where I sell it. If it’s in a gallery I’d probably charge more because the gallery commission needs to be taken into account. If I sell at a show the rental fee and how many days I’m at a show is relevant. It’s hard to say. Glad you like the work and see it as art. I have more info in the description below. Thanks for liking and subscribing!
Try some Ammonia on a copper scrap and see if that ages the copper. I use high-gloss spar varnish to seal my outdoor wood projects unless I’m using western cedar for the project. I also use deck screws as they don’t usually rust as do common wood screws or nails.
I have also been a luthier and am familiar with paduk. It makes a better guitar wood than used on bird houses, but maybe cusomers appreciate it as much as the birdies.
@@I-build-crafts You are correct-- it is beautiful wood. I have used it for what is called a bridge plate, glued under the inside of the sound board, the top of spruce wood that the guitar string ends contact when strings are in place. The guitar bridge is glued onto the outter surface that the strings contact. The wood is hard and very resonant, which gives a well made guitar its loud, punchy sound. Padauk is not seen from the outside, but by examining with a mirror, a guitar customer will know care and choice of quality woods was used. BTW, your bird houses are very beautiful. I know your customers appreciate them as well as the little birdies. Cheers, young lady, Bob
I have found bird viewing depends on the bird. Some birds don’t care if their sitting right next to people while some are fearful. Can’t really say. I will add that the presence of cats will keep the birds away. Thanks for liking and subscribing!
Hi thanks for subscribing! The link and phone number for the company that sells the glue is down in the description under my video. I received tons of requests for it so I decided to put it in the description. I think you should call them the phone numbers in the description also and ask them about this glue made for boats. They told me all about it when I called which is why I ordered it I think it’s high tack glue. I hope that helps you!
Hi, Great video on a great subject! Can you tell me about the hard marine glue that you use at certain times? The birdhouse with board and batten style and copper top. How would you mount this birdhouse? Do you hang them with wire from a tree? What would you charge for that house?.. Approx 15 hours plus materials. Please up the videos!! Thank you, Steven
Thanks Steven!! Great to get good feed back!! I have a link in the description area of the video that will take you to the marine glue. It is called High tac I believe. As for mounting you could attach it to a 4 x 4" pole or a long back pipe (found in the plumbing area of a hardware store. Also buy a mount for the pipe and screw that to the bottom of the birdhouse. Burry the pipe into the ground. That should stop squirrels an snakes from getting into the birdhouse. Yeah, lots of time in preparing the wood parts etc.!!! I think I sold that bird house for $275. Good luck with your endeavors! Thanks for liking, sharing and subscribing. It really helps with UA-cam ratings!

So happy to see and hear from people who see the beauty in the things that I make! Have a great day!
Thank you for your support. It’s very much appreciated.
Great job 👍👍you show real craftwomanship and I like the creative little things you added to it. Don't know what you charge for them, but I would say worth every penny. Thanks for sharing.
I sell them at festivals
Your video is so calming to watch, the music wonderful as well as your voice.
Love how the video is very detailed. Beautiful bird houses. Lucky Birds!
Thank you very much and thank you for subscribing and liking! It helps me very much
I like the bandsaw.
The machine is versatile and great for fast work.
Easy and usually safer to use than some o the other machines
Pleasure to see your handiwork

Do you find bird boxes a good market for you ?
Seems like. fun to design and a reasonable to build.
David
It is the safest of all the saws ✌🏼
Great design and build. I really like the acrylic sides and the padouk caps you used to cover the ridge beam. The battens are a great touch also.
Thanks. I have a few more coming up soon. I love making a Bird houses and people seem to very much enjoy them.
I found this video to be very relaxing and enjoyable to watch. Also, loved the birdhouse. Blessings.
Great hobby. Love making birdhouses! Nice work! 🤗
Awesome, something new for the grangirls and papa to do this summer. that gets a thumbs up :)
Thanks for the thumbs up!!
Excellent birdhouses!!! Very nice!! Well done!!!
Thank you and thank you for subscribing and liking my videos, it really helps me a great deal!!! cheers
Looks very well put together. The only draw back is whether it so airtight that it might get too warm inside and the chicks will suffocate. I usually just put together boards and leave a small triangle at the top and the sides not too tight so as to get a small amount of air through the house. Not criticism just an fyi. Looks good.
Thanks all advice is good
Beautiful houses. I love the unusual ones at the end. ❤❤❤
Thanks!!❤
Thanks for the tip! Thanks for liking sharing, and subscribing!
Thank you and thank you for your support and subscribing and liking it’s much appreciated
Great job your bird houses are beautiful very nicely done! Tom R 😀
Thanks Tom I really appreciate you commenting and also liking what I’m making it means so much to me. If you haven’t already please subscribe that is another huge thing for the algorithms with UA-cam!!!
Great video, I'm physically challenged and just starting to tinker with woodworking.
I’m glad my video can help in some way.

wow. that's all I can say.....well, besides "you are amazing". Loved this video
Wow, thank you!
I enjoyed your build. You are very creative. Here in California I would add some breather holes in the sides at the top. Thank You
Hmmmm good idea
beautiful design on this birdhouse love all the details. i'm intrigued with that boat glue that you mention, will love to buy it and use that on my garden railroad, I build the houses and all details with my grandkids, now I have another idea tyo build with them, thank you so much!!!
Thanks for watching and commenting. I am thrilled that you’re going to try this with your grandkids. I get the glue from a company called gluestix.com
I just want to add incase you haven't read the other comments that epoxy is the strongest glue that I have ever used but if you've used it you know can be messy.
carlos alvarez. Use eirher Titebond III (3) or Gorilla glue. Both are watwr proof. The Gorilla expands as it cures and is tough stuff. Bob
Love it! I would only use two pieces of wood for the roof so that you could see the birds better.
Thank you for your video. I really enjoyed seeing the process and really loved the examples at the end. Keep up the great work!
Thanks likewise I appreciate your positive support and comments please subscribe and like
Wow! What a great video. Thanks for sharing.
Those are some really awesome and unique houses! You're obviously very talented and creative! Love them!
Thanks for your support, liking, sharing and subscribing!!
Beautifully crafted pieces
nope I didn't do that. Good idea though.
Thank you for your response
I hope you one day create a business where your birdhouses are available for purchase outside N Carolina
You do beautiful amazing work
I have been thinking about selling a few things online I will post it and one of my social media‘s when I get to that place but thank you so much for your interest. Perhaps you could follow me on Facebook but I would post it.
I found this video relaxing and really enjoyable to watch...ty so much
Thank you, and thank you for subscribing liking and sharing!
I love your birdhouse I love that you can open it up to clean it out and I love the bamboo in the front
Thanks! I very much enjoy the spontaneity in creating them.
I love this. It is beautiful I’m sure the birdies will love it.
Thanks. I have to come. Please subscribe
I meant to say that I have more birdhouse videos and their creation to come. When you subscribe and hit notifications you’ll get automatic updates on my videos. Thank you for watching
Very cute, nice work. !!!!! WOW SO AMAZING.
I usually glue a strip of bird wire or some twigs inside under the hole to help babies climb out when it's time to fledge
Thanks for the tip. I’m sure my views will love that! Thanks for subscribing
great way to use scrape wood! enjoyed watching and motivative
I have started making some nest boxes for wood ducks and bluebirds. I have nothing as nice and creative as yours. Thanks for sharing. I would also like to know more information on the marine hot glue. Take care and keep up your fine creative work.
Gluestix sells the glue. Good luck with your nesting boxes and have fun with your creating!
That's really cool I wanna try to build some bird houses for extra income
You are totally Awesome, the detail, the love you put in these. I enjoyed this video so much. Thankyou for all the information and May God Bless You Richly❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much! Very much appreciated !
Interested in that boat glue you use. I just started making birdhouses and really enjoy building them
Thanks! Details about the glue are in the description below the video. Good luck.
Beautiful bird house🕊🐦
Thanks for liking and subscribing. I will continue to make more interesting projects. I am in the process of making small birdhouse that are not as detailed but are more affordable.
Love the attention to detail. Beautiful!!
Thank you very much and thank you for subscribing
Thats a wonderful birdhouse.Congratulatios. Best wishes from Germany
Thanks from Germany - I love Germany, it is very beautiful!
nice build , and some really cool birdhouses
Thanks!!!
Great video, it can be a hobby that makes money!
Yep, thanks for your support
I think your tenants will be happy with their new house.
For anyone making birdhouses. Birds don't need a perch at the opening of the house. A perch can actually allow predators, like snakes, to enter the birdhouse.
Try using a comb to hold the brad nails instead of pliers, It is thinner and seems to work better.
Great tip thanks
How big shud hole be as birds won't be able to leave home great stuff
Well done video! Love the music too.
AMAZING!!!! How much for this piece of art??
Hi Paul, prices vary and depend on many factors. The one with the plexiglass may be around $175 - $200. But it depends on where I sell it. If it’s in a gallery I’d probably charge more because the gallery commission needs to be taken into account. If I sell at a show the rental fee and how many days I’m at a show is relevant. It’s hard to say. Glad you like the work and see it as art. I have more info in the description below. Thanks for liking and subscribing!
Super job. Learned a lot on those roofs from you. Thanks
Thanks I’m a teacher at heart
Keep up the nice work. All the best to you.
Thank you very much!
Try some Ammonia on a copper scrap and see if that ages the copper. I use high-gloss spar varnish to seal my outdoor wood projects unless I’m using western cedar for the project. I also use deck screws as they don’t usually rust as do common wood screws or nails.
Thanks for the tips
I have also been a luthier and am familiar with paduk. It makes a better guitar wood than used on bird houses, but maybe cusomers appreciate it as much as the birdies.
The color is beautiful that is why I use it. No other reason.
I like the plexiglass sides. Do the birds like being watched that way though? How much do you sell these for?
I have found bird viewing depends on the bird. Some birds don’t care if their sitting right next to people while some are fearful. Can’t really say. I will add that the presence of cats will keep the birds away. Thanks for liking and subscribing!
Never saw such a beautiful bird house . U are so talented
Do you sell them an what. Is the price
I just made one from a tin can.
Thanks. I do sell them mainly at festivals for around $200 - $300 lots of work, material resourcing and time into each build.
I would like to try the very strong glue u mentioned. Love ur bird house .. thanks Thiea
Good job good job looks really well
Enjoy your work thanks for teaching us plus love the music great presentation
Thanks for watching and I appreciate your compliments! Thanks for subscribing it really helps
Wow craftsmanship at its best
Nice and cute bird house. Where are the holes necessary for proper ventilation and drainage?
They are hidden
Hi, Great video on a great subject!
Can you tell me about the hard marine glue that you use at certain times?
The birdhouse with board and batten style and copper top. How would you mount this birdhouse? Do you hang them with wire from a tree?
What would you charge for that house?.. Approx 15 hours plus materials.
Please up the videos!!
Thank you,
Steven
