    Question: Do the length of an Yemenite shofar determine the quality of sound? I purchased my first one about 2 Years ago. I have been practicing blowing it and have come a long way. For a number of reasons I chose a shorter one. Whenever I watch videos of others blowing a Yemenite shofar I notice they have a longer one. I don't get the quality of sound that I hear in these videos. At this point I'm not sure if it's my ability that's lacking or just the fact that the shorter ones don't sound as good as the longer ones.

( Captivity of the Spirit is Awakened within the Saints) are released. I see the hand of g-d move to stir the souls of the Saints to action. Shalom. and peace be within you. I have the Yemenite Shofar 41 3/4 inches long. The mouth seems a bit small for my lip to get a good tune out of it. I was thinking about cutting an inch and a half off and remaking the mouth just a bit larger. The Sofar I ordered was supposed to be over 45 inches long and not so pollished but they sent me the shorter polished one. I am still learning how to use it so I will wait before I cut and reshape the end. I also have a 32 inch Rams horn that I need to make into a shofar and I have been trying to find info on how to do this. I don't want all the character polished off of it. I just want it shaped up to play.

    • @TheTallitMan
      @TheTallitMan  9 років тому

      +Charles Garrett Your Yemenite shofar is probably 45 inches through the curve.. if you measure straight flat from tip to bell end then it may measure about 40" to 41". I don't suggest that you cut the horn because you will ruin it since you do not know what you are doing.. many inexperienced people have tried and were not successful. Also the rams horn is very difficult to make into a shofar.. just dont do it... buy one instead.

    • @cdgarrett1
      @cdgarrett1 9 років тому

      +TheTallitMan Thanks for the expert advice. I finally figured out with my Yemenite Shofar that with my skinny lips I need to use the side of my mouth to get a decent tune so I will not have to adjust the Shofar. I may buy a Rans Horn Shofar later but I have already ordered the raw Rams Horn and it will be a project. Another Shofar master also told me it will be very difficult just to sanitize the raw horn and he also advised me to just buy one. A Rams Horn Shofar over 30" would most likely be very expensive to buy. I am very handy with tools and have worked with wood and many other materials. I'm use to working with dirty things and cleaning them up. I think I can handle this task of making a Shofar from this Rams Horn if it is not damaged beyond use already.

    • @carynasatir664
      @carynasatir664 9 років тому

      May I suggest Charles that you try out your instrument in person before you buy
      it. Ordering on line is not a great way (imo) to own something so
      personal. I have tried so many that are just not good and/or not good for the way I blow.

    • @TheTallitMan
      @TheTallitMan  9 років тому

      +Cary Nasatir That is bad advice to give Charles. If you buy from Amazon or Ebay then you will not know what you are getting as 90% of these shofars are not good sounding shofars. But people buy them anyway because they are saving money. I travel to Israel twice a year and oversee the thousands of Shofars that purchase from manufacturers in Israel for resale in America. I have personally gone through each Shofar to ensure that it will be easy to play. NOW, you may go to a christian bookstore to try out the shofar in person before you buy but you will not be able to try one out in a Judaica (Jewish store) as it is not allowed by Jewish law. Once a person puts their lips after it has been manufatured we are not allowed to sell it.

    • @carynasatir664
      @carynasatir664 9 років тому

      +TheTallitMan I don't want to start an internet argument, but I always buy from Judaica stores and I always try them out. There is no Kosher law against that. Also buying on line or in a Christian store does not insure the instrument is Kosher for playing on High holidays. I am just saying it is difficult (and I stated "in my opinion") to purchase such an instrument blind without trying it. Good luck to you all.

    Could you tell me what animal has horns come from? Are they only killed for their horns?

    • @TheTallitMan
      @TheTallitMan  8 років тому +2

      The horns are from the Kudu antelope of Africa, it is not in the CITES list of protected or endangered species. The Kudu Antelope is humanely put down as it is Kosher and thus Kosher for human consumption.

    • @Klomster88
      @Klomster88 8 років тому +1

      Also, in theory, you can capture an animal and saw off the horn, since they are similar to nails,hair in material and how much it feels.
      But it's simpler to kill the animal, eat the meat and use the horns for blowing horns.
      So there is no need to kill the animal, but in the wild it would have a penalty socially since the horns are used for rivalries.
      And i don't think any of the hollow horns are like the moose or deer, whom fell their horns yearly.
      Those horns you can just find in the woods.

    • @nicholashollis1522
      @nicholashollis1522 7 років тому

      Errm... Not quite, Torah calls for the shofar to be made from a sacrificed animal (modern Judaism has a slightly different process for various reasons, the animal is still killed according to tradition though.). Also, the horn contains a core of live bone (you can actually see this membrane still present in some poorly made shofars, they STINK.)
      You COULD make a horn like you described, but you'd have to be surgical and you wouldn't be making it according to tradition or Torah.

      The video you watched was produced and uploaded 8 years ago. It seems that it comes to a question of money for you so how much are you willing to invest in the Kingdom of God? The Shofar is not just to praise and that is where you are mistaken. Now it also depends on what you want it for.. This shofar is a professional shofar capable of 6 to 7 scales of notes but if you just want a horn just to praise God then just get a standard 3 scales notes horn which may be more in tune with your budget. Here is the link.. so choose your weapon.: thetallitman.com/shop/ols/products/yemenite-polished-shofar-395-to-415-standard-2-notes
