Thank you for the great video, I just changed the pump and rack on my 2008 Ford Galaxy with the help of your video (Haynes manual as a backup) good old jack-stands and a jack with a plank of wood to drop the subframe out. One of the rack bolts didn't want to come off with a modest breaker bar, the only thing that shifted it, in the end, was an impact gun!! Just go to fill the hydraulic fluid up with some more fluorescent green (chf11s), nick up all the bolts, and do some lock to locks... Thanks again your video really helped me know what to do :D
Watching how much of the subframe has to come down, I wondered how stable your car was on the lift. Old style frames were so rigid that would not even be a consideration. Good for you to include the various complications. People who watch these videos can get an unrealistic impression about how easy repairs can be. Good technique helps to avoid many complications but when you touch corroded areas, stuff happens even in the best hands. Ultimately a pro has the skill set to deal with trouble that would overwhelm an amateur.
One Auto, Hi. Thanks for sharing your video with us .. Can you please explain me something.. I removed my subframe from my S Max Max 2007 1.8tdci but I forgot remove 10 M bolt from steering shaft , to replace the engine flywheel.. After finishing the work. I started the car, I feel the steering wheel heavy and my hose pipe coming from the steering pump to power steering rack jumped off, all steering fluid dropped off to floor. Can you please tell me if I done something wrong?. Now I buy a second hand power steering rack and the pipe, but I don't want make same mistake.. Thanks again for your time.. And sorry for my bad English..
+The Disgruntled Mechanic Thanks Mike. What normally happens with these Fords is the captive nut weld inside the chassis will break! So you end up cutting open one side of the chassis to undo it! Then a re-weld and paint job. So I guess I got lucky really Lol
Yep the Buick I did the the sub frame mounts and it was the same way the nuts were welded in side the frame. I was happy when they actually came loose and didn't snap. Lots of PB blaster and patience!
Doing one soon on an S-max! Thanks for making this video! Haynes takes the suspension arms off - nice to see you don't need to do that. Did you properly align the subframe when you refit it? Looks like I need to get a special Ford tool for that, or a wood dowel. :)
I had mine in the local garage for diagnostics on wobble / left hand pull. They just charged me £48 for tracking. I took it back and said its still knocking and pulling. they said inner tie rods and they will track it again for free. I pull of inner tie rods and they are new / perfect! I now fear the worst:( Rookie Garage costing me time and money! They know I do the work myself so they dont care perhaps. Great job I can tell your good. I use impact wrench / drivers on everything the same as you. Just smash the job out and get face injury in process;)
Thanks for this video! I just had rack replaced on exact same car. Now steering is too light going one way and too heavy going the other. Any ideas please? Tracking was done and is spot on. Bled the system, no strange noises.
Sub frame bolts remind me of what happened to me: In my former car ( mondeo wagon tdci mk3) I started hearing a clunking noise when stopping or pulling over from a standstill. What had happened was that one of the prisoner nuts (inside the frame) had come loose, and no mater how hard you would tighten right rear subframe bolt (the one below front passenger feet), it would get loose again after 1-2 weeks and move when the wheels started pulling the chassis. It was a pain in the ass to weld that nut back, as you have no space to get the welder in. Also, I do not know why Ford made the subframe bolts with low pass (I do not know how to say ths in english, but basically you have to turn the bolt just a bit for it to advance a lot) so you have to torque it very high in order for it to actually apply force, and this was not helping either. Plus, we get a lot of corrosion here, we spray salt on roads, and everything gets crusty quite fast. In order to not remove the subframe when changing the control arms, I preferred to cut the old control arms bushing bolts (bad position, incarnation of automotive gynecology), and then change the bolts with new ones that i inserted from below (instead as Ford recommends from above) and then secured with double nuts and loctite.
As honest mechanics go, you are one of the finest, and we do get enough money or appreciation for what we do. That was a bitch of a job, and like all bitches it left you scarred :)
OUCH! That is the main peeve i find about working on vehicles beyond sore back and joints or being dirty is the injuries. I'm only a hack DIY'er who helps people i know and I'm always leaking in a dozen places. Did your engineer pal just tap it again or did he put a thread insert in the one that stripped? Nice job. Much more fun with a lift. My boss had a duff rack in his Transit. Luckily it got pinched off his drive when the idiot left it warming up one morning before he had time to get me to fix it for him. I'm glad i got out of that one. The gypsies had fun with his transit as well. haha.
zoidberg444 Injuries are part of the job unfortunately. I've always got some sort of cut or scratch somewhere. The tread had picked up on about 3 threads half way up so it was just a case of running a tap up to clean the thread. I could have done it myself but due to the limited access I had nothing suitable to hold the tap. Fortunately mr engineer did.
Watching this from the US reminds me why I stopped working on and driving FWD cars. A lot of stuff crammed in a small area with no real room. The captive nut in the "frame" of the unibody snapping off reminds me of a few Ford Tauruses I've had over the years...1987, 1997, 2000, etc. Each one has given me trouble with that stupid captive one. Friend had a 97 Sable (same thing different trim), and some idiot mechanic cross threaded it! Had to cut a hole in the floor pan, then slot the area it was held captive, get a replacement installed and weld it all back up! Anyways - great work, I really enjoy watching these videos - even though that steering wheel is on the wrong side of the car! (how many times have you heard that!?) -Nick
I know what you mean about the Taurus as it looks like the European Mondeo that would give us exactly the same captive nut problem. Thanks for your comment Nick I appreciated your support.
Hi mate could you help me I replaced the power steering rack in my 08 Ford s max and where the replacment steering rack bolts to the power steering lines it’s leaking. Do you know is there little rubber bits inside in the valves that maybe I’m missing ?
I have smax have Sterling rack put in ...but my steering. wheel upside down.......are for galaxy's steering rack the same ...why my steering rack upside down
HAHA if that's the only injury you get in a week it was a successful week. Nice job Rob! Hopefully we can get a lot more subscribers for you when they see who we are watching. Great videos keep them coming mate!
Cheers mate yeah you know what it's like, at the end of every day our arms are scratched like we've been self harming! Muscles pulled, hands cut etc. etc.
Glad I found this video. Annoyingly I've just replaced the tie rods as I thought that was the issue, of course I only found out it was the rack when I replaced them. How long do you think the job should take? Looks like the hardest part is getting the blooming thing out even after it is all disconnected.
Bro my dad has exactly the same ford galaxy as this and he had his steering rack changed. After he got the steering rack changed he got the alignment done then when de began to drive it felt like something just hit the wheel whilst turning and the warning ⚠️ showed up saying power steering malfunction. The mechanics looked at it and they were not able to diagnose the problem so do you have any solution for this problem? Really nice if you do thanks.
That car doesn't look like it's ever been cleaned in 170K. Great job even though you got the injury. It could have been worse. When i think of how many times something unrelated to the job messed up over the years. I always say that it's better to happen at the shop than a week later on the road.
maybe I should send you some safety flip flops to keep you safe 😂 I've been wondering what kind of fluid the Fords used in the steering. Now I know! Not a fun job to do on axle stands I'm sure. Nice work as always
Do you have to swap out many of the electric PAS pumps. mine stopped working a few months ago on my mk2 focus but luckily it was just a bad contact. i cleaned them and touch wood its been fine ever since
Bernard Carter I've never had to change one yet. When they stop working it's usually a sign that the Alternator has stopped charging. Vauxhall Astra especially
I bet that hurt OUCH- At first i thought you were working on a classic but racks weren't invented back then. We dont have that name in north america , nice to be able to see some different auto. Well done buddy , i hate racks , the ones on cars :)
Just wondering is a mk4 ford Mondeo the same set up as I am about to do my one on its as its Knocks when turning and feels like it's trying to jamming up. It looks like it's same thing

A 2010 vehicle here in Pennsylvania I would have been fighting with major rust. Nice job Rob.

You do all that by yourself.
Nice job m8.

Just fitted a rack on a E46 BMW & it wasn't half the job this Galaxy seems! Shame about the leaking pipe, Can't win them all! Have a good christmas/NY

There are little valves in hoses, perhaps you put them back together in wrong direction.

Thank you for this Video tutorial. What a godsend this is.

How much is a new steering rack for that galaxy? Just been told we have a problem with our TDCI 130.000 miles

Great video.im doing my 2010 galxy next weekend.😦

wysetech2000 Thanks man. Yeh defiantly better to happen in the shop.
I was going to say I think I spotted a safety squint at the start but not sure I spotted one in the time lapse 😉
I needed a full face crash helmet for that job!
Nice job.
+Tam Couch Thanks
Great video as always. Nice editing :-)
Krillekris thanks man!
maybe I should send you some safety flip flops to keep you safe 😂 I've been wondering what kind of fluid the Fords used in the steering. Now I know! Not a fun job to do on axle stands I'm sure. Nice work as always
Badgertronix 😂 yes I could bend safety flip flops around the end of my bar. BMW's use the same fluid.
The Green stuff is CHF, Had Red ATF on the earlier BMW models just for reference :)
Ashley Burton so Ford uses the same green as VW?
Badgertronix Correct! Google Pentosin CHF11s spec sheet should be the second one down. PDF file shows all OE spec's including VW & Ford
Ashley Burton awesome thanks. I'm used to the VW stuff, just hadn't figured out it was the same as the Ford
Do you have to swap out many of the electric PAS pumps. mine stopped working a few months ago on my mk2 focus but luckily it was just a bad contact. i cleaned them and touch wood its been fine ever since

I bet that hurt OUCH- At first i thought you were working on a classic but racks weren't invented back then. We dont have that name in north america , nice to be able to see some different auto. Well done buddy , i hate racks , the ones on cars :)
STEVE ROB you don't want to get stuck under a heavy rack. Or maybe you do 😂
Badgertronix Oh you have me thinking on this one. Hahaha
STEVE ROB Yeh it bloody hurt and drew blood 😂 My own fault I suppose.
How much have you charged the lady for this job ?
Noooo, It's to much work oh my God! Nice video.
Just wondering is a mk4 ford Mondeo the same set up as I am about to do my one on its as its Knocks when turning and feels like it's trying to jamming up. It looks like it's same thing
From memory I think it’s a similar process
@@OneAuto ok I can't find a video on a mk4 on removing the rack .
it is possible to convert right-to-left steering wheel to Ford Galaxy 2008,Thanks
It is but it’s a major job. Never done one, never would want to
close to 1000 subscribers well done mate
been there done that the problem is with some customers as you well know yourself the answer you get is well it wasn't like that when I gave it to you hahaha
Yeh not far off 1k Cheers Leon 👍
One Auto, any hat hahahahaha
If I did have, you wouldn't want it anyway!! 😂 😂 😂
One Auto, hahaha
Does it happen much for these relatively new steering racks to fail ?
This car had 170k miles on the clock and was new to the customer so we had no history for it. It’s the only one I’ve done since. That’s all I can tell you.
Ah well I suppose 170 k miles cant complain much. Thanks for reply.
thought of going to say halfords and say "i make youtube car repair videos and i need some blank number plates"?
Haha far easier to blur the plate during edit.
thought blank held on with elastic bands would be, and guess youve been called the british southmaineauto

Do you do MOT's?
No I get them done nearby
lucky you, but wear safety glasses next time should you? You have only 2 eyes.
I’m so clumsy I should wrap myself in bubble wrap 😂
How much would this cost to get done?
