The Man Behind the Mask: How Lelouch Led With the King | Code Geass Analysis

  • Code Geass has had its fair share of spotlight on Kato, so when Zero was tasked with producing one big project, it only made sense for it to be an analysis of Lelouch.
    An intense political drama intermixed with giant mech action sequences, one great man stands behind it all. After a tragedy befell his family, Lelouch vowed to destroy Britannia. In its place Lelouch, along with Suzaku and CC, seek to build a new world. A world based on the ideals of his younger sister, Nunnally. To do so, Lelouch must don many masks, creating a deeply layered facade. He must become Zero.

    Some of you are probably wondering why this video seems familiar.
    Over the past couple of months, copyright claims have struck this channel at an alarming rate. So many of our best videos have been forcibly taken down or demonetized, including this one. You'll have noticed in these past couple uploads, we've shifted our editing style in an attempt at circumventing any copyright issues. While this is far from a guarantee, we're hoping it'll save us from any disaster such as losing the channel from strikes. As such, we'll also be re-editing and reuploading some of our older content every once in awhile in between new ones. We hope that some of these reuploads will still be new to our most recent subscribers, but even if not, please leave a like or comment just to help us get back into the algorithm!

      I wouldn't say abolished copyright I'd say abolish the abuse of copyright, because the way I see it videos like these are incentives for people to watch something or partake in a product. The fact that their video was taken down is a clear abuse of the system because they are actually showing appreciation for the product this is free advertisement in my mind, hell even if a movie is bad or product is bad it is a clear indication of wanting to either improve or advertise again . Copyright was put in place so people wouldn't plagiarize,

    I love that scene with Suzaku and Lelouch, it shows how smart Suzaku truly is. While there are moments of his intelligence before, many people treat Suzaku as if he is an idiot up until that moment. Watch how Suzaku leads the conversation. He has realised the truth. He had realised before this that Lelouch had not meant to kill others such as Euphy or Shirley. Before this he had refused to accept that though because to him that would invalidate his actions. The specific questions that Suzaku asks shows that he knew Lelouch was lying before he even asked them. He is the one leading that conversation. Him saying that he recognizes Lelouch's lies was merely for the sake of the audience. Suzaku has encountered a truth that Lelouch had not yet, Nunally never mattered. Sure Lelouch says he will make the world a place where Nunally can be happy but that is his scapegoat. That is the mask that he clings to so that he doesn't have to face his own actions. Suzaku realises this and wants to show Lelouch that there is more to life than just Nunally. This isn't Nunally's war, this is Lelouch's war and he is the only one who can stop it. This echoes Suzaku's mesaage in r2 ep21. He says that Lelouch is still Euphemia's murderer but what he is really saying is "You beat the emperor, now what? You still need to redeem yourself and save the world.". Suzaku likely would have joined Lelouch then and there had Schneizel not shown up. Suzaku, the character that many had seen as an idiot up until that point reaches his maturity before Lelouch our protagonist(Lelouch would reach his at the end of r2 ep19). Suzaku is done with all of the lies and the masks. He is believes that he lost his chance with Lelouch and is even willing to confess to Schneizel at that point. All he wants is an end to the war, an end to the oppression. Suzaku tries to talk Lelouch down in Tokyo but Lelouch has not yet become mature and childishly tries to kill his friend. The next time they meet is on Kamine island. When Lelouch shows up Suzaku doesn't go "Lelouch I hate you" or try to go after him, instead he says "That's my cross to bear". He almost seems relieved that Lelouch appears but angry at the same time. He decided in r2 ep17 to finally move to end that war but Lelouch only starts now. Suzaku is the same as he is here as he was in r2 ep17. Suzaku is done with all of the masks but ironically has one left to wear, the biggest mask of all, the Zero Requiem.

      Seems like fitting punishment, wouldn't you agree?

    • @DrDoompenguin
      @DrDoompenguin 3 роки тому +14

      @@KatoBeyond Oh absolutely. Because they had both matured Suzaku and Lelouch willingly chose their punishments to create truth from a lie. Lelouch could have given Suzaku the option to have the live geass removed by Jeremiah but Suzaku has accepted his fate and is willing to move into the future. The same is true of Lelouch. He could have prevented his own death and ruled as a god, but that is not what the world needed. They both accepted their own punishments so that they were the only ones left to blame. Suzaku who wanted to run from the guilt of murder embraces it. And Lelouch who originally put the blame on Nunally so as to save himself chooses to rebuke her and accept his own actions leading to his own downfall.

    Excellent video Kato even if it's somewhat reptitive by necessity. I am currently working on my own analysis on Lelouch for my own channel. Everytime I watch your brilliant takes on the character I sometimes ask myself why bother. Regardless I am going to focus on making the video anyways.
    As far as your critque goes while I don't agree with you all of your points I did enjoy the general argument. One thing I would like to add here is the tactic of the king making the first move is the basis for every conflict in the story.

    My reading of Lelouch: most interesting depiction of schizoid personality disorder, especially when compared to Light Yagami as something between a narcissist or sociopath, but probably just a narcissist. Lelouch is really deep when analyzed like that.

    • @LeonhardWelebny
      @LeonhardWelebny 3 роки тому +1

      I thought "not being interested in relationships/friendship/family" is a big part of schizoid pd ? Lelouch is firmly and 100% the opposite of that.

    • @ninebrains4769
      @ninebrains4769 3 роки тому +15

      @@LeonhardWelebny no, it's not. It's actually quite close to "if you care about someone, you should keep them at a distance." Lelouch really depicts that ambivalence perfectly.
      He also depicts perfectly having no big ego that is easily hurt (despite lacking no self-confidence whatsoever) because he just kinda doesn't care about approval, just honest feedback, treats the world less as a place to live in than a broken place that needs being repaired first.
      He's very self-aware about being honest with himself (psychoanalysts say schizoids LACK most common psychological defence mechanism), ready to embrace seeing himself as the problem/evil while caring much much more than his somewhat dark outlook on life would otherwise support.
      He is touched by other people emotionally, but in many moments because it kinda rubs it in how isolated and distanced he really is from them.
      The show even at many points narrates that his high level of motivation and involvement are not typical for him outside what we see in the show.
      He literally describes his life before Geass as being basically dead, is described by others who know him well (Shirley for the present and Schneizel for the past) as being aloof and withdrawn and always having kept others at a distance.
      He is very antiauthoritarian, literally emphasizes that while he challenges the entire world, to him that's a fair conflict and not him trying to subdue people he looks down on. That's a very typical attitude for a schizoid, as the psychology encouraged opting out of anything hierarchical, anything having to do with social approval entirely actually.
      The show depicts a schizoid well because it gives him a power that is so mighty he can basically force the world to address everything that makes him aloof and distant rather than just depicting a loner that is aloof and distant.
      The schizoid psychology, as summarized by the psychoanalyst Roland Fairbairn is "love not hate is the destructive force inside".
      So you get an introvert with high levels of self-awareness, who lives in his head with strong values but almost an embrace, not only a low inhibition, to accept doing evil that comes more from a deep sadness and loneliness and inability for anything more life-affirming.
      When he Geassed Shirley, he told her "I make you forget all the bad things that have happened to you", but leaves her memory of her late father just dying, and is then relieved she actually feels better. This is caring about people, but seeking close attachments this is not. Sure, he has some of them, he cared a lot about Kallen yet never opened up to her voluntarily. And especially given how Geass is a consent overwrite, that there is never a temptation to use it for sexual or romantic purposes may be seen as an argument that this is just not something that is in character for him.
      We even have a scene around the typical age when it is said that a schizoid became consciously aware of the need to become a self-sufficient loner when Lelouch gives up his claim to the throne and rejects everything his father stands for on grounds of him being unable to be a nurturing role model. Yeah, that scene is quite deep psychologically, and quite close to what some authors say is the typical age (7 upwards) when becoming a self-sufficient loner becomes a conscious choice.
      You could easily write a whole essay explaining what the concept of a schizoid personality actually means using Lelouch and Code Geass as an example.

      To me, that side to Code Geass was never even subtle. It's too smart to be obvious perhaps unless one knows the concept in more depth, but I find it almost undeniable that it's clearly in the text.
