Great review Shane, your hitting all the angles. As I have the 10 to 25 this lens was ordered as soon as it was announced. Hopefully it will hit the UK shortly.
Another thing to remember is FF cameras have way better low light performance than M43, so f/1.7 on a recent M43 for low light is like f/3.4 on a recent FF camera.
New to cameras and was wondering about this. In terms of light gathering is the end result the same as 3.4 on FF if we consider the size of the sensors? Would it require higher iso because of the sensor size?
@@rztrk3311 Do you have a light meter? Enter values for shutter duration, aperture and ISO. It calculates the same value regardless of sensor size. It does not care what size sensor you use. Yes m4/3 is noisier than full frame so using fast lenses helps lower the ISO.
@@rztrk3311 An f/1.7 aperture means the size of the aperture is 1/1.7 of the focal length, so technically an f/1.7 is an f/1.7 on any lens, on any format. That’s why a lot of people get annoyed when people talk about equivalent apertures even though equivalence is a helpful way to think about it even if _equivalence_ isn’t necessarily the best term. But in virtually every sense that’s relevant to the resulting image, a 25-50mm f/1.7 may as well be a 50-100mm f/3.4 on a full-frame. It may not be technically correct to call them “equivalent,” but to get into scientific conversations when someone just wants to know how they should expose their image is just silly.
This 25-50mm is my most used lens in M43. Nothing come close about microcontrast and colors, even the GM lenses for Sony. Leica don't really design lenses for Panasonic but still, I really doubt this lens has been created by Panasonic.
It's f/3.4 only in terms of DoF, not light/speed as far as I know. I.e. the explosure triangle values are the same for the correct exposure regardless of whether it's FF or MFT. Soo... it's "fake" parafocal?
G'day mate :) I noticed that the image (colours) from GH5S looked way better than the GH5II, especially a skintone. On GH5II it looked more magentish. Is it because of the colourgrading or LUT you applied? Thanks and great work!
Hi Denis, I agree. The GH5S still has the best overall image quality and that was straight out of camera Natural (or Cine-V) I can't remember which one I used. :) The GH5II is fine for skin tones but in Cine-V and D it's not great. I found to be best in Natural for straight out of camera results. I went for an oversaturated grading on the footage for something different just to show the colours pop a bit more. :)
These colors are SOO vibrant with default LUT, or did you tweak something? These greens look shocking! Also... Are you sure about its weight? Specs give us different values.
It's up to you how you want it to look. I cranked up the saturation for the visual I wanted. If you want a film-look you can get that with any number of luts. :)
I only watched this out of interest as I am not into 4/3rds. But this lens is ridiculous. If I have to spend that much money and the weight is equivalent to full frame lenses. What value does smaller sensor even brings to the table?
Thank you Shane great lens, shame you didn't try it on the G9. That's the camera I have, oh one more thing. Can we please have a little less of the dogs butt in the upcoming vlogs lmao :P. Stay safe brother.

Great and honest review. Thank you mate. Glad to see Panasonic showing commitment to us M43 shooters with such an amazing lense
Another excellent video with practical details. Thanks Shane.

Just ordered this. So excited!
Dude that gh5s footage looked amazing!!!!!
Dream video lens. just got my GH5II and will probably get one
One thing to remember is that f/1.7 is still f/1.7 of light; it's just f/3.4 of background blur. 😀

f/1.7 is just as fast on m4/3 as it is on full frame. The only difference is depth of field.
And to don’t “stop down” to f/1.7. You open up to f/1.7.

This is very good review, the best from you
Thank you so much 🙂
@@GeekyNerdyTechy So much love from Nigeria
GH5II it seems pinkies color most often, is there any comment?

10-25, 25-50 and a vintage 85/100 MF lens (Zuiko OM to keep it small) and endgame is reached.

It’s huge - but I want it. Tell Panasonic to send it to me. 😎😎👍
haha I'll see what I can do. This lens was a lot of fun to test out but it's huge alright!

Never! Dog butts are part of the showcase here 🤣
@ARC FPV I don't own a G9 sorry mate! I am sure it would work great on that camera as well.
Another lens I can't afford :(
I would love to own this but to me it is much to expensive
You are Panasonic fans,😀
