Gordon Laing another awesome, insightful and unbiased lens review! Thank you Gordon!!! By the way, did you shoot this video with the Sony A6400 paired with the Sony Zeiss 24mm 1.8 lens? Despite its price, it seems like an awesome little everyday lens?
@@ChristopheLanglois I did use that gear to shoot it - I think i put a caption at the start. yes, I like the confident focusing of the A6400 and the close focusing and shallow depth of field of the lens. Wish the combo had stabilisation though.
Did you get one for yourself, Gordon?
My list of requirements for a perfect video would be:
1. Panasonic 10-25mm
2. Belgian Beer
3. A close-up of Gordon
Jackpot!
Great video as always, this lens has been delighting me for video for a month now.
Thanks Jordan, I film these with your approval always in mind! (seriously!) Looking forward to watching your final review of it too!
And some good Port wine as we could see,
@@Serenoj69 I am fond of port, but sadly that wasn't a great one!
Beast of a lens. I'm not even scared by the size, having shot with FF lenses. The price makes it unreachable for me though, especially in Europe.
Could just use full frame and get a 24-70 f/2.8 - more zoom range, shallower depth of field, less noise.
@@youknowwho9247 and much less wide angle
@@jillianangell2570 not by much. 20 vs 24
Love reviews like this, where you add on little bits of info (like 7:37 - "I set it to auto ISO to keep the exposure the same") that help novices like me understand what I'm seeing and how it could help me. Good stuff!
You're welcome!
Nice and thorough as usual, Gordon. Appreciate this. Cheers!
Sorry Gerald, only just saw your comment! Glad you saw it and liked it!
An absolutely incredible review. Very professionally done. Thank you kindly
This lens paired with the GH6 is currently my dream run and gun setup. Its the exact focal range of lenses I use on my fullfame camera. 20mm 24mm and 50mm the even bigger coincidence is I'm at f3.5 for 99% of the time. I don't know how much difference the lack of lens stabalisation would make tho, as Ive never used a M43 camera.
This is the most comprehensive lens review and the best argument to purchase this lens.
Loving my G9. Thanks.
You're the best, I really like your reviews. I own the 10-25mm and the AFC in video is as fast as my A7III with the firmware 2.6. But I thought I had a bad sample because of the noise of the AFC but you showed in your video it was a normal behavior. Thank you.
now that lens looks quite beautiful
it certainly is!
You mentioned the Sigma as if it was a native comparison. It requires a speed booster, which drives the cost up (if you go with Metabones)
Very well done! I own the G9 with 12-60 and Leica 15, but this really opened my eyes to the 10-25. Thank you for the effort you put into this! Love to buy you a good beer or coffee soon. Thanks, :) - Sean Sewell
Cheers Sean!
Paired with the GH5, does it auto focus better than other Panasonic lenses? I heard someone said it did, but not really sure how that would be possible..
Very awesome video! Comparisons are appreciated and showing the stills samples of food and coffee show that this could truly be the lens for me. Thanks for sharing the vlogging view, which is my main concern with this lens. Is the weight and size a factor for trying to vlog with it? No doubt it has everything I want for both video and stills. It could be the one lens I carry to create all my content. What are your thoughts for holding it for vlogging with one hand, with or without a mini tripod? Thanks!!
Mr Laing, You are a drug pusher 8-). I always get gear lust and GAS when ever I see you videos (even the NAS and external Flash drive reviews). You're reviews are always among the best on UA-cam.
Great review! Hell of a lens! As a beginner videographer no way can I justify that price tho, I have just bought a gh5 with 18-35mm lumix lens which is great but I’m really after that sub 2.0 aperture. Can you recommend a prime/art lens a: a lot cheaper and b: I’m completely fine with having a fixed zoom.
Any help will be much appreciated 😊
Most of the cheaper sub-f2 lenses aren't wide, so it depends what focal length you want. As Felix says, the 25mm f1.7 - and also the 45mm f1.7 if you want a telephoto - are both great choices.
Gordon Laing thanks for reply and yes as I am discovering the wide angle is more important to me. your thoughts on the Rokinon/samyang T2.2 12mm ???
@@film35guy I've not tested it, and I'm guessing it may be manual focus only, but that's no bad thing, especially for video. Could be a great choice for price, speed and focal length.
I need a sponsor!
Is there any advantage of the 18-35 & Speedbooster Option, except for the price? (Talking about shooting video)
I haven't tried it with a speedbooster so can't say, but I'm assuming you get worse autofocus.
Yes, the advantage is you get an 21-45mm f/2.1 FF equivalent lens rather than this lens which is a 20-50 f/3.4 FF equivalent lens.
@@NoTicket But if shooting stills, no where near the AF speed. IS the Sigma/ mount converter weather resistant?
Too big for my Pen F :(
Tooooooo expensive
It is for me personally, but not for pro video shooters.
20-50 f3.4 lens for 1800$
u r a joke.
@Delicious Landscapes You're wrong. This lens is exactly equivalent to a full frame f/3.5 for low light performance. That's because MFT is inherently two stops noisier at the same ISO than full frame because of the smaller sensor area.
Example:
A shot taken at 25mm, f/1.7, ISO 200 on MFT and a shot taken at 50mm, f/3.5, ISO 800 would look exactly the same on terms of field of view, depth of field and noise.
This lens offers optical performance on par with a full frame kit lens, but with half the zoom range at three times the price.
Very well done, especially enlightening comparing it to the 8-18, as well as pros/cons for video vs stills. Thanks!
You're very welcome!
Wow, the first m4/3 lens I have been excited about, in awhile.
It is a really exciting and quite unique lens. S nice that even after ten years, the M43 system can still get us excited!
We'll, I think the 50-200mm f/2.8-4 is pretty cool. But yes, the 10-25mm f/1.7 has lots going for it. I initially want it for stills in dark and big locations. Event photography. That it's so incredible for video is like two lenses in one.
Really useful video - thanks Gordon!
Thanks, glad you liked it!
Great review, I shoot narrative films with gh cameras, the 12-35mm f 2.8 has been bread and butter lens but 2.8 is just not fast enough. The Sigma 18-35 is just not wide enough.. even with the speedbooster, its clunky , I have the panasonic 20mm 1.7 and 25mm 1.7 both really great lenses... love the 25 1.7 . This new lens is EXACTLY what I've been looking for that 10-25mm range at 1.7 , that is heaven. Bye Bye Sigma and speedbooster.
Exactly! It's bright AND wide!
The lens is amazing. The f1.7 I am in love. but....I notice a flaw but it may not be that big of a deal if you wouldn't use this to film. I bought 2 follow focus units and I put one on the focus ring, and one on the zoom and what I find is that you can't change focal points and zoom at the same time. For example, if you are zooming in and turning the focus ring to a closer focal point, it sticks at whatever focus point you start at and then snaps to the closer focal point once you stop zooming in. If that makes sense. I don't know if anyone has pointed this out but changing focus while either zooming in or out should be something that I would think the lens should be able to do especially for the price. Has anyone experienced this or know why this is? Hello.....? Panasonic?
Hi Gordon. While vlogging with 8-18mm, the background is "wobbling" on the sides of the video/frame. Is it still the same with GH5 or G9 and 10-25mm, when not using a Gimbal? Thank you, Daniel
The only vlogging clips I made with the 10-25 are in this video. Do they look similar to what you;'re experiencing?
@@cameralabs Good Morning from Peru. Ah ok. Thanks for the feedback. With the G9 + 8-18mm it's shaky like this:
ua-cam.com/video/RQGjzskeMmo/v-deo.html
ua-cam.com/video/-UJ_7mySzTE/v-deo.html
And many times even worse!
Would be nice if it's like not a problem with the 10-25mm.
Have a great day,

@@cameralabs By the way: here... ua-cam.com/video/M2qZQRirRfE/v-deo.html ...you are not using a gimbal?
The G9s autofocus is actually really good! Very underrated
It's alright, but reviewers evaluate af performance based on comparisons to the competition. Compared to similarly prices offerings from Fuji, Canon, Nikon and Sony, the G9's af lags behind considerably.
If this lens had image stabilization I would buy it for my GH5s in a heart beat. the 10mm-25mm is the perfect focal range and the 1.7 aperture is perfect for the low light shooting that I often do. However I do a lot of run and gun shooting, and while I do think stabilization is somewhat overatted, I still need at least lens stabilization to make this a worthwhile purchase.
It would be to heavy and big.. you need to take a gimbal
Or you could switch to a full frame setup, use a 24-70 f/2.8 and get more zoom range, shallower depth of field of needed and better low light performance than this overpriced Leica offers.

super excited for this lens! my go-to is the gh5 and sigma 18-35 like many others and there are only two things that bug me about that set-up, the weight and the fact that i have to use a speedbooster, i want to keep the set up as minimal as possible, so far there has not been a single mft that made me think to give up the old set up until now!
Thanks for your review on this lens. I am thinking of getting for my BMPCC4K but then the price also opens up alot of other options. If it were cheaper I won't think twice in getting this lens. What is your take of this?
Mft for the win! Dope lens! Great review Gordon!
I really don't understand the hype. This lens is equivalent to a 20-50 f/3.5 on full frame. It delivers the same optical performance as a full frame kit lens, except with half the zoom range and at three times the price.
This is the best review I've found for any micro 4/3ds lens. Thank you Gordon Laing for your talents and diligence.
Very interesting review, the test of the background blur as a function of aperture value is also enlightening ...I am also glad to see that mft system is still healthy and alive.....
Leica 12mm 1.4 + M.Zuiko 25mm 1.2 = no better solutions in the m4/3 system - in my opinion of course ...Leica 10-25mm f1.7 is certainly a great zoom. but it is also very big and heavy...
But I'm afraid that it is too late for me to buy this lens ... too much has already happened on the market. He also showed a lot of Lumix in S1 and S1R to buy this lens ... The premiere of this lens should be connected with the new GH6 !!! What is the future of m4/3?
Or maybe it's "The last of the Mohicans" ???
GH5 / GH5s are great but Panasonic tell us more about your plans !!!
At such a price ... so far I have no plans to buy this lens. More waiting for new lenses for Lumix Full Frame.
@N. D. With what such DG Summilux 12mm 1.4 sucks? Have you heard the rumors? Do you have this lens and use it for photography? Did you have any contact with him? It is incredibly precisely made. This lens is wide and it is difficult to do for m4 / 3 with focal length of 12mm 1.4 !!! Currently, he has no rivals at all. Although m.zuiko 12mm 2.0 is also a good glass. DG Summilux is a very solid construction. And when it comes to Sigma, please test 16MM 1.4 with GH5 / GH5S - it's one of the best lenses in the system ... although maybe it does not impress you. And I do not think 42.5 1.2 for a work of art. I prefer the M.Zuiko 45mm 1.2 PRO - in every aspect ...
I don't do video, but would love a reasonably sized 10-25 f/2.8 for urban photography.
I loved using it as a walkaround lens for stills...
@N. D. The difference in depth of field is pretty significant, plus shooting at 1.7 is huge for low light compared to the 2.8.
A full frame with a 24-105 f/4 kit lens offers the same depth of field and noise performance and twice the zoom range at a half the price...
@@youknowwho9247 a full frame 24-105 f4 is in no way equivalent to this lens. But if you insist that 4mm at the wide end and 0.6 stop better performance is not important then I say it is just as valid to compare this lens with the Sony 16-35m G Master lens. When you take into account the amount of vignetting (typical of wide full frame lenses) the f3.4 equivalent of the 10-25 actually ends up pretty close to f2.8 or better equivalent.
Great review Gordon. I love love this focal range. I am disappointed though that It's been 2 years since this lens came out and still no Full frame lens manufacturers are even trying to come up with focal range and f stop similar to this. 20-50 f2.8 would be my dream lens especially as a hybrid shooter.
Really good review...you ticked practically every single box! You even showed that the lens does indeed telescope slightly when zooming, a fact many reviews fail to show (was beginning to think it was a conspiracy...LoL). Great Job!
You're welcome, I try to be thorough!
Gosh, who would expect 8~18mm look sharper in the corner than 10~25mm?
But only on the wide end. ( which is what I care more about )
ah, DOF porn of craft beer. you, sir, speak two of my familiar languages. chapeau!
Gordon, another excellent review, you are the best on the web. Every detail is covered and you've been this consistent for years. Keep up the good work.
AGREED!
I love this lense - i use this on my ZCAM E2 and E2-M4. Yes i use two lenses for my filming :)
The zoom range is great and makes me a bit envious. But certainly not £1800 worth! And I wouldn’t trade it for my Sigma 18-35 F1.8 Art anyway (even imagining I owned a M4/3 camera). The F1.8 on an APS-C body is equivalent to roughly F2.9 on a full frame, whereas the F1.7 of the Leica on a M4/3 is equivalent to only F3.4. And I think my Sigma has a flatter field as well. And one thing you didn’t talk much about is the colour rendition, and that's where my Sigma nearly makes me cry for utter joy and amazement. My Canon body might help there as well, of course.
I’ve always found the whole idea of M4/3 fascinating, but much less attractive in real life, simply because APS-C offers a lot more bang for the buck.
the Sigma 18-35mm is fantastic if you have an APSC body.
Best review of this lens. I love your reviews because you describe in many angles which really helps to decide.
Thanks!
Mr Laing, you need to cut your coffee intake.
Is this in reference to my shaky hands? Sadly it's not caffeine-related.
A beast of a lens, priced accordingly to its beasties. Too beastly for me
It delivers results equivalent to a 20-50 f/3.5 on full frame. I don't understand the craze. This ridiculously overpriced lens is pretty much equal to a full frame kit lens if you take away half its zoom range, and significantly worse than a standard 24-70 f/2.8 unless you absolutely need the 4mm on the short end. This lens is the perfect example for me that MFT gear is sold by employing the most ridiculous marketing tricks.
Lens breathing sucks like a beach without sand. Cleared the air now.
I'm pretty sure this is my ideal m43 lens. The 12-35 is my go to but I'm constantly researching wide, fast primes and I don't see one that's both as wide and as fast as I'm looking for. This 10-25 checks all my boxes - it's now mostly a matter of saving up and justifying the price! ha!
So if you are after a landscape lens that is sharp across the frame, the 8-18mm is the better lens.
I'm now finally getting the 10-25mm for my GH5 & GH5s!
Great review Gordon. Looks like a great lens, but ouch, that price, ha. It's a shame there are no Olympus, or Panasonic, primes below 12mm, ( excluding the 8mm oly pro fisheye ) as this would be a cheaper option, to get into ultra wide optics. I know there are cheaper manual focus primes, like Samyang, and Olympus has the cheaper, but painfully slow 9-18mm.
Yes it is pricey, but again as you've realised, it does effectively replace a bunch of primes, some of which don't even exist!
Superb review Gordon, very well done and you get all the important things in there.
Not a videographer but it does look like an interesting photography lens as well. Price in Sweden is around $2500 dollars though so could get almost 2 F1.2 primes for that :-O
Thanks again!
/Rasmus
Thanks! I really enjoyed it for general photography!
It does seem like an excellent lens. I wonder what Camera Conspiracies will say? ;-) For me, I can't justify the cost and why not use primes, it is fun having different lenses.
Time, this lense is essentially 3 primes in one. Dont want to be missing a cirital moment in a wedding due to switching lenses.
Great review and an amazing lens! Love it👍🏻 I hope that Panasonic will release GH6 with 4k120p. That and this lens and you don’t need anything else for video😀👍🏻
How about usable continuous af and decent low light performance?
As a m4/3 concert photographer this looks like the perfect lens. I can ditch the Olympus 7-14 f2.8, Panasonic 12-35mm f2.8, 15mm f1.7 and 25mm f1.4 without giving up much at all.
Exactly, it can end up replacing quite a few lenses.
Why would a concert photographer shoot MFT and not full frame?
Another great video Gordon! Just let me get one thing straight... If you compare it to the Sigma 18-35 f1.8 you said the sigma lacks in the wide angle area, but (and maybe I got the all thing wrong) on a M43 camera if you take that 10-25 f1.7 you need to multiply it by 2, bringing you to FF equivalent of 20-50 f3.4, but if you take the sigma 18-35 on an APS-C, you need to multiply it by, Lets say... 1.6 on a canon and you get 28.8-56 f2.88 so you lose around 9mm on the sigma but you get a much faster aperture plus you put it on a larger sensor and the sigma cost $1000 less so... Sounds better to me :)
yes your sums are correct but 20 vs 29mm is a massive difference at wide angle
That's right on the paper...but in practise, things are very different. So much factors affects on lens quality, you can't just do the math and think that's correct...on paper yes, but as Gordon says, 9mm is HUGE difference in this FL, almost just that is worth price difference, specialy when you get pana-leica quality...
How did I miss this? The price is... well, astronomical.
Hello from Germany!
I have to say, it is a great video! Thanks for this great comparison and in my case I will go for the 8-18f2.8-4 and 12-60f2.8-4.

How you film the LCD screen of the camera?... Regards Fella!
Sometimes I literally film the back of a camera with another camera, but here I recorded the HDMI output using an Atomos Ninja V.
I had to send this lens back for a seized-up zoom ring. I suspect due to the same issue of the weather seal ring coming loose.
Very poor QC for a lens of this price.
It was just still under warranty, so I was pleased to learn today that Panasonic Australia are going to replace it.
Hey Gordon, bought your book mate :) thanks for this. Very difficult decision for me at this stage - in order to afford this lens, I have to give up (trade in) my trusty Oly 12-40mm, 17mm f1.8, 25mm f1.8 and 9-18mm. (but I'll keep my 45mm f1.8 and 75mm f1.8) i.e. I'm trading my tiny primes for this godzilla... But boy, the f1.7 constant aperture is just so enticing! Just considering whether I could seriously walk around with this lens for street photography (without scaring people). It'll pair up very well with my EM1 Mk3.
Will be see a 25-50 1.7?
Yes...
This is going to be stellar on my G9 for both photo and video shooting! Thank you for this great review!
It's perfect for both!
This and the sale price of the G9...forget about it! Looks like people are jumping back on the bandwagon. I've had nothing but beautiful images with all my M43 systems. I've never thought about leaving.
I am surprised the 8 mm is not that much wider than 10 mm actually. Otherwise: of course 1.7 makes it a lot faster than the 8-18. Just no comparison if you ask me. A good test might be shooting it at high res to see how much t resolves. My Laowa 7,5mm f2.0 is great at 20 MP but at 80 MP on my E-M1.2 I see clear weak spots not visible on the 20 mm f1.7 or 56 mm f1.4. Even wide open and the Laowa stopped down. So how about the 8-18 or 10-25 etc?Of course we now know why the lens came to be: to compensate for the huge crop on the G90...Seriously: this lens was not brought to makret by a company that is going to quit a format anytime soon I think.Oly could eanr a lot from Panasonics simple on screen indication where you are when focussing manually. But it might be hidden in my Oly EM1.2 somewhere in its menusystem...
I really like the innovation of these types of lenses but I seriously wonder who will buy this for the price. I have the Sigma equivalent and I couldn't justify this purchase unfortunately. Most people are commenting the exact issue with the price. I have several Leica Panasonic lenses and the 42.5 is beautiful but the 8-18mm is dissapointing so I'm wary of the zooms.
I'd be interested to compare this and a g9 with an ff and a 24-70mm. Not sure why but this kind of appeals and I have an S1r.
I have a G9 and for wide angle/normal shooting I go with the 12-35mm F2.8 and the LAOWA 7.5mm F2.0 that gives me a wide selection and reasonable cost....thoughts.
Ken Reiff that’s not much cheaper than just buying this one. I have the 12-35 but I pretty much stopped using it once I got the 8-18 Leica. This is the lens I’ve been wanting for.
@@ClevelandTerry That lens is great.....what I like about the LAOWA is 1. price, much cheaper than just about any zoom, 2. f 2.0 constant aperture, 3. 15mm wide, 4. very small and can take filters...but bottom line is they're all great
Ken Reiff agreed.
Interesting results. It appears if you are just looking for the best quality across the frame at wide angles, the 8-18 is your best bet. The 10-25 is better for all around use as expected because of low light capabilities and more standard zoom. At the expense of added weight and cost.

I won't be purchasing this lens purely because I don't have a use for it but I am very happy to see top quality lenses being produced for the Micro Four Third system.
I'm really torn between the XT3 and the G9 and lens choices seem aplenty. This lens oozes quality and somehow, makes me want to pick a camera up someday lol (mobile phone dweller :P)
If you buy a camera, get one with a full frame sensor. It may seem more expensive at first, but it's actually the best system in terms of value for money.
Landscope 360 no it is not.
@@castielvargastv7931 Yes, it is. Comparing pieces of gear that delivers equivalent results, full frame is consistently the most cost efficient option. The only reason crop sensor gear seems cheaper is because the quality floor is lower.
Landscope 360 cost efficent? Ff is not cost efficent at all. If you want cost efficent you buy a mft cam. Cheaper bodys much cheaper lenses. You also can have a 200-800 lense without breaking the bank or your neck if you carry it around.. a ff frame system can cost 2-5 times more than other systems but the picture quality is never! Two times as good. Most people wont notice any difference . Ff is not worth it for 95 percent of all photographers i dont care about pixel peepers.
@@castielvargastv7931 You need to look up the word "efficient" in a dictionary. This isn't about the lowest possible cost, it's about bang for the buck.
Of course it's possible to go cheaper with crop sensors if you want. But that's only because the quality floor is lower. Cheap consumer grade crop sensor gear offers such low optical performance that comparable options don't exist for full frame, because nobody would buy them. The Panasonic 14-42 kit zoom for example is equivalent to a 28-82 f7-11 on full frame. That lens obviously doesn't exist, it wouldn't sell.
Now, if you're ok with such low quality optics, crop sensor formats are your best option. But as soon as you want pro grade image quality, the tables turn. When you get into territory where crop sensor glass has comparable full frame alternatives, the full frame option is consistently the cheapest. In the full frame world, you get a 24-70 f/4 for as little as 500 bucks new. The equivalent 16-55 f/2.8 for aps-c will cost you at least twice as much. The corresponding 12-35 f/2 for MFT doesn't exist, but a 10-25 f/1.7 does, which is very close and costs 2000 dollars.
So yeah, full frame is the most cost efficient system. That doesn't mean it's got the lowest entry point - it doesn't. It's perfectly possible to go cheaper with crop sensor systems, although among them an APS-C DSLR would be cheaper and produce better results than MFT. However, comparing cost efficiency, meaning performance per dollar, full frame is the system that offers the best bang for the buck.
Brilliant review as always
I'd prefer the 8-18 and a 25 1.4
The price and size are too much for me
Gordon, I really enjoy your reviews. Regarding the corner sharpness discussed at about 14 minutes into the review, do you think the corner softness of the 10-25 vs the 8-18 could be due to the fact that the subject is at a significant angle to the image plane of the lens, and the 8-18 appears sharper due to increased DOF from the smaller aperture?
Yes DOF is a factor, plus the field isn't perfectly flat either, but they're both within the DOF at this kind of wide angle
Hi Gordon, great review as always. did you get this lens for yourself?
Excellent review once again Gordon! Technical reviews of this lens in terms of sharpness, CA and other corrections are absolutely glowing (as they should be I guess for this price).
The best review for the Leica 10-25mm just yet! Thanks for comparing it directly to its competitors, the Sig 18-35mm, Leica 8-18mm and the Leica 25mm.
But the moral of the story, super great lens if you can afford it. But if you already have the Sig and 8-18, then there really is no point in upgrading. I think the 10-25mm will become even more enticing if they make a 25-50mm(?) f1.7 match. Then those 2 lens really would cover 99% of most peoples needs.
Or you could get yourself a full frame kit with a 24-105 and get the same optical performance and zoom range of both those lenses in one, for a quarter of the price.
$1800 wow
Hi guys, do you think a Laowa 7.5mm f/2 is needed if you get the Leica 10-25mm f/1.7? Thank you!
I think this lens should satisfy you!
@@cameralabs thanks, I think you just saved me some $ :) the Laowa is very popular but I realized most petite don't have the Leica 10-25mm to pit it against (quite a difference in price and weight). Thanks for taking time to reply. Merry Christmas!
@@cameralabs hey Gordon, happy to report the 10-25mm has been a joy to use ;) thanks for the video and keep up with the good work!
its not leica. it's made by panasonic. quit with the lies.
Did you listen to what I said or just post without watching? I explain who designs it and who makes it.
Very well done. I’m gonna have to test that manual focus and compare it to my Oly Pro lenses. I think that will be my only deal breaker.
It's personal of course, but I felt it was fine.
Thank you Gordon for your time making this video. I just picked up the 10-25mm recently for my G9 shooting for nature and landscape videos. Your review is much appreciated! You mentioned the lee 75 filter system for the Olympus in your video. I am learning through researching "all the reviews" on UA-cam I will probably need ND Filters, myself, and I believe it after getting 1/8000sec shutter speed choices in the shade and still getting zebra patterns on white flowers. Have not tried the lower ISOs yet (ie 50-150). Did you use ND Filters on the 10-25 for those beach videos you shot, and can you recommend a brand or brands? Liked and subscribed!
Thanks, nope I never use NDs in my reviews as I prefer to show the optical quality, so yes, my outdoor videos have v fast shutters and choppy motion. I use the Lees for long exposure photos, but you'll be better off with a screw on filter for video, maybe variable. Perhaps B&W or nisi?
Amazing review…so comprehensive!
Thanks!
I've been looking at doing video's on youtube for some time now, I came across this kit in a camera store, your review has convinced me this is a good deal thankyou, I'm going to buy the Panasonic GH5 body /w leica 10-25mm f 1.7 lens also comes with a Rode mic, & v-log software. Then, of course, all the extra's the tripod, SD cards, bag, extra battery, etc etc, any tips help I'm thinking its going to be a very big learning curve ahead. 20th April 2020
That's a nice kit you're getting...
Excellent video, Gordon! Any sense in how the image pairs with the Panasonic Leica 35-100 f2.8 II? I work in film. On a separate note, I've been about ready to sell the 35-100 and ditch Micro 4/3rds altogether, but this lens has me considering otherwise. I still wonder about the future of Micro 4/3rds, and thus investments in the class.
I've not tried the 35-100 for a long time, so can't say, but I was very impressed byy this new model in my tests and my gut feeling is that it would be better.
Also a very nice showcase about what aperture size does actually
This lens is an exciting release. I don't do too much very wide angle so I would probably go with the cheaper alternative. It would be awesome if Panasonic came out with a f2 version of their 35-100mm. Olympus did with the old DSLR line up. I could see that in my camera bag.
I agree, f2.8 is too slow.
How significant is the 2mm difference at the wide end between the 10-25 and the 8-18? Trying to decide trade off between low light and wider. I have only budget for one at the moment and need to be using them equally indoors (video) as well as for landscapes (photos)
It's quite a big difference as remember the 2x field reduction, so you're comparing 16mm with 20mm. Both are wide, but 16 is much wider.
Lots of 8-18’s for sale on eBay - all upgrading to 10-25
Weeeeell, I feel I've put forward a compelling argument for the 8-18mm in this video. I remain very fond of it.
Gordon Laing and I’m going on eBay to buy the 8-18 great video btw
I'll buy this. But my 7-14/2.8 Olympus isn't going anywhere!
@@hankroest6836 I still like my 7-14mm Olympus f2.8 as well!
Gordon Laing I think those people hadn’t watched your video or they need to sell to finance the 10-25
This is one of your best reviews. U nailed this one like the lens. Respect.
Great Review! Never saw a live bokeh test like this before. 👍 (and the 2001-gag "infinity, not beyond" was funny.)
And zardoz is one of my favourite movies!
