  • WARNING: This video may cause drowsiness. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery while watching! In the spring I talked about insulating my Trillium Outback fiberglass camper for winter use. By November, I'm still talking about it! I hope to make progress by the next video, but I at least added surf music to keep you from going comatose. Enjoy (or not)!

      Yup, some kind of sheet foam that you can put in the trailer while moving and just put up when you set up in new locations. New construction sites often have scraps in the trash pile as they have to orient and tape the seems on houses, but you just need a light weight wind block. Free is good.

    Use the plastic window kits with the double sided tape and then you blow dry it and it shrinks works well , I’ve lived in many old houses and it makes a world of difference and you still have your windows, just make sure you attach the tape outside the metal frame

      I use the 3M Indoor Window Insulator Kits in my house for years until i got my windows replaced. These work excellent. They work best if you can put the tape around a corner on a piece if trim. But if you can not do that flat on trim of the window. I have even used them on the outside, but not sure how well that will work on a camper when on the road. I quickly learned not to use a hair dryer to shrink the plastic, but to put it on carefully top down keeping it straight and just pulling it snug.

      CAN TIRE used to sell a shrinkage plastic that was made to insulate windows. The kit came with double sided tape that you put around the window on the wall. Attach the plastic film, use a hair dryer to heat shrink the film. It works pretty well but left tape residue on the wall.

    Slim, the sound and visual effects were great! And it's not a boring vid at all. One tip from someone who lives in an RV, you can rig the reflectix-type material so that it can be removed. Cut it to shape, run some duct tape around the edges, and you can either install grommets, or simply use velcro tabs to mount it to cover the window. W=Put it up at night, and in the day, take it down from whatever windows you don't want covered during the day. And, you resorted to the one thing everyone who deals with living in a camper in the cold, you put a carpet down on the bare floor. Most effective way to keep from losing heat through the floor. Great video again! Cheers!

  • @arnoldseay9118
    @arnoldseay9118 3 роки тому +1

    This suggestion might be a little late but carpet pad under the carpet would give you a big increase in heat retention. In my camper I used Velcro strips instead of snaps which worked out really well. The plastic on your window should help a lot. Great video. This will make your camper a lot more comfortable in winter.

    I live in my RV year round and I can tell you it’s better and easier to insulate the inside rather than the outside. A trick I use is to separate at night when it’s the coldest, parts of the trailer your not using. In your place at night I would curtain off the windows at your table. What I mean by that is have a curtain that separates that part of your RV with where you sleep and not waste heat where you are not using. Once the sun comes out in the morning depending on weather and how you park those windows can help the place warmup.

  • @volvo09

    Love your upgrades! I'm always so impressed because you work with what is AVAILABLE, and works for most everyone on any budget.... You aren't running out getting some top of the line spacecraft grade insulation, instead you are upgrading what you have and you use smart stuff. It isn't the best, but it can get anyone excited and into fixing up a trailer, and you show it doesn't have to be out of reach expensive to make a difference. Can't wait for results!

    Put something between that rust and your floor or you will end up with stains on your linoleum just from normal humidity over time.

    • @evilcam
      @evilcam 3 роки тому +5

      Good point. He could either try to CLR the rust off the carpet, put something over the floor where the stain is, or coat the stain with some silicone (or whatever works) and avoid that inevitable stain transfer problem. If he doesn't do anything, that stain will definitely and without question eventually transfer to the linoleum.
      Some people in these comments suggested he put some foam board on the floor, and that would definitely help insulate (a bit) and avoid that stain transfer.
      Random side note: Isn't it odd that insult and insulate are separated and made distinct by only two letters?

    Hi Slim ... I was going to suggest a floor rug and design an outdoor skirt for the trailer (if staying for any length of time in one spot). You could incorporate Reflectix for that purpose too. Pack snow against the skirt since it will act as an insulator by preventing cold air from getting underneath. BTW, next year, it's back to normal. Edit1: And, a proper vent cover helps too - mine is 4" thick with reflectix on one side to bounce the heat back down. Edit2: But you know all this b/c you already did most of it on your A-Liner! Cheers, Steve

    In terms of comfort, I would consider having the underside of the trailer covered with closed cell foam. If your feet are warm, you will be comfortable. Short of that, take thin rigid foam and glue indoor carpet to it to form a thermal barrier under the table where your feet rest.
    As to the windows, I would fashion storm windows buy cutting a wooden frame out of plywood and covering it with 3M shrink window plastic. After applying, it is heated with a hair dryer and shrinks taunt. This will allow light in, but dramatically increase your comfort while sitting with your back to the windows.

  • @CLdriver1960
    @CLdriver1960 3 роки тому +4

    You would also want to measure the heat transfer (heat loss) rate in terms of temperature vs time from the before and after insulation.
    You’re right about the reflectix, it doesn’t have a lot of R value. Its value is greatest to redirect radiant heat. A higher R value in the bays and walls such as Rock wool, or solid foam would be a big help.

    Good video and....not boring at all! Another thought for the windows.... There is a clear plastic product that is designed to be an insulator in cold weather. You shrink wrap it to the window with a hair dryer. I used this year's ago in a house that has very thin window panes and air gaps around the frame. Worked really well! Regarding the carpet, I bought inexpensive area rugs that come in various sizes for $10 at a local dollar general. These work great, especially since I have dogs and I can, when soiled, just hang them outside and hose them and clean them, or put them in a bathtub and wash them. Or, they are inexpensive enough to just replace if need be. I immediately noticed the insulation factor in having these down! I live in a 21' toy hauler trailer.

    So funny- I was glazing over... thanks for the add ins here, it was entertaining that way.😄. The thicker clear vinyl is better than the shrink stuff, but overlap any aluminum window framing, . You will be glad you did.
    Reflectix on the window, but they say it needs a gap to work better. Then make a window curtain made of fleece material from those $3.00 throws from Walmart . And a curtain of it up to your door, they are so cheap that you can get enough to have them all match, it really helps keep the cold on the other side of them ! really helped the propane efficiency. But that front door, aluminum and glass really was like an icebox until we put up the reflectix and fleece blanket. And all the heat didn’t immediately go out the door whenever-it was opened, the blanket helps ... and keep the cabinets open while getting the place heated, close up after that. My lessons learned. These are cheap and in your place it s one of the “funner “ things to get done, . On the floor I used that connecting mat, it’s spongy, about an inch thick and comes in colors, even wood look. Then carpet over it. It’s quick, not permanent and does give real good insulation from the cold floor

    Definitely not a boring video. Extreme amount of knowledge to come I’m sure. I’ve been insulating my RV so I need your knowledge to do this a little better. I can’t wait for the next video sporadic or not.Oh next time need to have a close-up shot of your new T-shirt. Peace and freedom.

    Keep 'em coming! Just spent 3 weeks in National Forests in my fiberglass Scamp. Yes, the floor gets cold and I have laid down 1/2" interlocking foam kids-play panels which works great! Windows are a problem and I do want to see outside and enjoy the light. May try blue/rigid foam panels on the windows on the "dark" side. Thanks Slim - Always great!

    Slim you know the way a curtain can keep cold from a window coming into a room in your house, i think something similar might be possible in a camper.
    I can visualise a thin reflectix insulation or similar loosely hung and pinned around the camper. I think trapping a layer of air behind an insulation hung up like a curtain could work well then take it down in the Spring.
    Also a tip for the floor, cover it in the soft 1 inch foam interlocking squares you get from diy stores.
    I think like you, if its warm to the touch it has an insulation value.

    I would insulate under the floor with XPS rigid styrene. A 4' x 8' x 1 1/2" sheet would be $25 c or so. Use a reputable spray contact cement like 3M or Locktight. UA-camrs Gonagain had good luck that way. That's what I'm doing to a Transit van right now.

    One method common to "4 Season" trailers is to use insulation underneath, within the frame rails with coroplast (corrugated plastic), sometimes with a layer of reflectix between. You can duplicate that using foam boards taped where jointed. Cover with reflectix if you would like. Then cover with coroplast (check with sign shops) of frp panels from the standard builing material stores.
    Slim, maybe not this year, but who knows what you may want next year.
    Also check for transparent window films that reflect UV and heat/cold.
    Thanks again for your great videos and the peak into your thought process.

    You can use magnets for the window insulation so you can cover it at night. And remove some at day time to maximize the light outside. I also suggest you put the plastic vinyl outside the window for all windows (snapped it up with magnets for easy removal)

    Kinda related - I always kept a 100 watt light bulb burning in my truck camper when stored at home and not in use. Kept the inside temp just a little higher than outside. Helps create enough of a temp/dew point spread to cut down on condensation in the camper while it is stored. Helped control moisture related problems.

    If planning to install many snaps onto fabric, carpet, etc., consider the very inexpensive metal formers that fit onto the jaws of a vice grip. Once the vice grip's tension is adjusted, snaps can be installed with one squeeze each. Formers come in pairs, one set for the caps and the other for the snap's male receivers.

    Being a fellow Canadian. You may want to put the clear window plastic you can get in a kit with the two sided tape we use on house windows. And works great. And not to expensive. Not sure the table cloth vinyl will work well.

    Good ideas. I needed new flooring and went with a "temporary" solution, now into 3rd year and working great. I used 24"x24" foam interlocking tiles. I found wood-grain (Best Step - Comfort Flooring), which matched my paneling. Other colors available. Looks nice, easily replaceable, and soft & warm on feet. I don't know insulation value. I use small area rugs on top (easy to shake out).
