      @@m1lst3r And to say nothing of Hong Kong! The 80s were incredible on that side of things both before and after John Woo took off with A Better Tomorrow! Lots of great stuff by Sammo Hung, latent Shaw Brothers classics (including the earliest works of Jet Li), the hidden gem that is Duel to the Death, and most especially Jackie Chan's run from The Young Master (1980) to Miracles (1989), which comprises the bulk of his many, many masterpieces. I love Quentin's movies, but how can he write off the entire decade like that?!

    Somehow I suspected that QT is Woo's fan. Even though his REservoir Doigs is almost a rip-off of City on Fire. However, I must berate QT for saying that 1980s action was flat. I mean, seriously? If anything, 1980s revitalized action cinema. Heck, Walter Hill's Extreme Prejudice is probably the best modern western masquerading as ction film there is. And it's not due to John Woo's contribution, although he swept me away with Hard Boiled and A Better Tomorrow.

    • @vitorafmonteiro
      @vitorafmonteiro 6 місяців тому +3

      I think he means in terms of directors with stylistic flair, sure the 1980s had loads of great SHLOCKY pulpy action films but aside Walter Hill (48 hours), Woo and Cameron with this first real "personal style" action films (as he mentioned them, I'd also add Donner, Verhoeven but his only real action film in the 1980s was Robocop and McTiernan only really smashed in action with Die Hard in the decade's last year, so let's let it slide), most other films were made by hack or gun for hire director which did their stuff well with the right cast, crew and script but had no personal touch or that capacity to elevate the thing through style. 1980s western action cinema was still great DESPITE THAT though. As usual in Tarantino when his film analysis gets going, he doesn't care on the ambiguous wording or if the point gets muddled, but we who heard him more then once get used to it. I still think he's underplaying the 1980s action cinema, but he got a certain point that it was massively done by producers and crews more than stylist directors.

    I just watched Reservoir dogs for the first time in a long time. I was like a wait a minute; this is similar to City on Fire. Clearly Tarantino took that idea and put his own spin on it. At the end of the day, they're completely two different movies. It's hard to do anything original in Hollywood. At this point, everything has been done.
