Most of these comments are from several years ago but the cameras is still a little powerhouse in November 2019. I’ve been working with the PXW-X70 for a few months now and am extremely pleased with its layout, audio and image quality. Its small form factor is great for run and gun work. HOWEVER, I am stymied trying to get it to work in proxy record mode. I’ve loaded two high-speed SD cards. In the menu, I go to the third icon from the top (REC OUTPUT) and select. REC SET. From there: FILE FORMAT = XAVC HD; REC FORMAT = 1080/30p 50Mps; SIMUL/RELAY REC = SIMULTANEOUS REC; and PROXY REC MODE = ON, SIZE = 640x360. I was sold on this feature because I have an older 2010-model iMac for editing using Premiere Pro CC 2019 (no problems there). When I check my A card, the 1920x1080 file is there, but when I check the B card, no file has been created. A search for “proxy record mode” and similar variations yields nothing from the Sony camera manual. Other than this one frustration, I have no other complaints. Can anyone explain to me how to generate proxy files in this camera?
I used to have the same problem, but you can work with your regular large files as proxies while editing, so that the editing process is smooth & not time-consuming. Then after you have finished your editing work, right before you export it, make sure to switch them from proxy to regular again, then wait for this to load (it's like a pre-exportation before the proper exportation), after which you can export. The X-70 can shoot up to 60fps. Shooting at 60p rather than 30p will make your footage look more impressive. Just remember your timeline in post has to also be 60p & to export at that same frame rate too.
A terrific XDCAM video series and a very well done video training tool on learning more about these SONY XDCAM Camcorders. Just a thought here though regarding this audio tutorial segment... Doug mentions on this video that audio channels 3 & 4 are automatic recording levels only and they cannot be adjusted..got it! Why then would we want to feed our precious audio coming from the mixer board into audio channel 3 & 4 for this concert recording scenario? Does that not take away from the musical nuances of the music being recorded by flattening everything out by having an automatic recording level take place? We would lose all of the dynamics that the composer wrote into the musical score and played by the musicians. With the musicians working so hard in performing to make it happen the auto record level control in essense will negate upon playback hearing any of the musical inflections i.e. like going from double pianissimo to triple forte. I would opt to do the reverse and put the internal built-in stereo mic on auto for the ambiance of applause taking place and have a manual recording level on the audio channels 1 & 2. Please correct me if I am wrong here but I learned quite some time ago that in order to preserve the musical dynamics as we heard it live... it must be recorded in a manual fashion. BTW, I do own the SONY PMW-200 XDCAM and it's one awesome video camera. Ted V.

+Dana Jenkins A bit late but, you can buy a XQD card reader that plugs into your USB port. Also, on my Sony FDR AX-1 I can view my 4K video either on a 4K tv (with included cable) or I can plug in my USB cable to view the videos. It is likely also similar in your case. The video editor you chose should be able to render 4K video without an pre-processing.
