While people often think of winter when they think of the North, nothing is more beatiful than Nordic summer. It's bright, warm and brief. The seasons here are a great allegory to life, and how a month or two of beatiful summer makes up for the cold and darkness of life.
Kaldheim captured my imagination like no other plane since Theros. I bought my first magic cards in many years just to marvel at those beautiful images and stories. It even got me to read the Poetic Edda and explore norse language and myth (thanks dr. Crawford). Truly a special place. Thank you for the wonderful video, and congratulations once again on your great achievement!
Mortality is scary, especially when you don't believe in an after-life. The panic and soul-crippling terror when you realize you could go to sleep and then never wake up again, completely ceasing to exist... and you wouldn't even know it was your last.
@@Sheriff_K You don't need to believe in the afterlife to see that your existence is not tied to your body. You are the universe looking at itself from a specific point in space and time. Death is not the end of your existence in the same way a wave crashing on the shore is not the end of the ocean's existence.
18:50 I wouldn't call this mountain "calm and quiet" given the actively erupting volcano, but yes, I could agree that this could be an image of a world after Ragnarök, where life has ended but the world continues
Thank you for illustrating exactly why kaldheim should have been a block rather than just one set. So much thematic richness to explore, but they only got to scratch the surface of each realm
Thank you for all the flavor and lore. I wanted to love this set more, I feel like wizards fails at selling the flavor anywhere near as good as you, they should hire you.
I don't think I've ever cried that much for an artistic essay. It made me reconnect with friends I've lost and have missed so much. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.
Man. I hate the waits for your videos, but EVERY TIME you remind its worth it. You put so much effort and care into these videos. By far my favorite MTG content creator. Congrats on the PhD!
that intro was a work of art, had to stop the video just to compose myself. it reminded me of the blackroom episode of robert falcon scott’s last expedition into the south pole…
"On the last days of their lifes, Yggdrasil shook." That's the line, that made me cry. As a German of pagan faith, this video deeply moved me. Also, didn't know about the whole Bluetooth thing. Thank you so much for this video and congratulations on your PhD.
I don't play Magic anymore, however Nordic culture and mythology have always captured my love. Glad to see Kaldheim pay proper respect. Congratz on the PhD btw.
This essay reminds me of a time a few years ago when a younger, more foolish version of me pushed back on the notion that MTG UA-cam could enhance my life. "I already live and breathe this game more than anything else that I experience," I said. "What can ten minute videos on Magic teach me?" It was an early Rhystic Studies video that showed me that while the medium of the video essay was unlikely to enhance my competitive play, it is the perfect vessel for cognitive and emotional bombshells that to this day connect my gaming life to my experience of the world that surrounds it. Rhystic Studies continues to be the only channel capable of making me forget myself completely as I give my ears and mind over to Sam's steady hand, and voice. Kudos, Sam, and thanks. And I hope that now that your formal commitments to academia are in the past, you'll be able to bring even more of that spirit of curiosity and discovery to your writing and video production for Rhystic Studies.

I could go on forever about the production value, about your love for this game, the art and lore appreciation, but these videos are so much more. Thank you for making these, congrats for your phd, and now I will upgrade my Patreon subscription. Cheers
My favourite -youtuber- doctor has returned also , the hikers trying to get to kholat syakhl didn't all die on the spot and some of their bodies were found quite far from the tent and the circumstances of their exhumation are quite intriguing which has caused the speculation and conspiracies you mentioned. After seeing your name on twitter a ton and then only later finding out that you make videos on youtube, I found myself completely entranced in this video after maybe 10 seconds. It's a beautiful work of art that I even feel like non-magic players would appreciate. Well done
So poetic, and bringing a soft tear to my eye in realizing, that you'd conclude this video of life, death, and storytelling, by retelling the story of the life, and death, of those hikers, and that warrior. Truly nothing ever dies that can be retold through a good story. And yours are some of the best out there.
I am so thankful for this channel and your videos. I may not like everything Wizards of the Coast does, but these videos have made me appreciate Magic the Gathering as art.
