I think you could say the commentary was 'of it's time' "This is how Spurs RETALIATED" almost implies there were fisticuffs, or as we would say today, 'handbags' I would substitute the word 'RESPONDED', for 'RETALIATED', most probably a generational thing, words do tend to alter their meanings over time.
