    Great video. It brought me back to some great times I had with my own houseboat, and made me shudder all at the same time. You've got a MOUNTAIN of work in front of you. But wow, what an adventure that thing could be. I had a 35-foot pontoon houseboat for 23 years, and lived on it for 8 of those years. To quote Dickens, "It was the best of times. It was the worst of times." I have so much emotion wrapped up in that time of my life that it's hard to even express here. A marriage ended there, another one began there. I had two great dogs there, at different times. I spent countless hours working on that boat - the motor, the roof, endless washing, repainting, rebuilding walls, etc. The Harbormaster and his wife treated me like their son, and both of them are now dead and the marina no longer exists. Being on the water gets in your blood. Enjoy the time you spend on it, because you'll never forget it. And you're lucky to have such a great Dad.

    I remember those Steury houseboats. I was aboard a brand new one at the Chicago Boat show at McCormick place in 1973. I've got a 1978 boat owners buyers guide in front of me right now. In 78, Steury, based in Goshen Indiana, made boats from 16 feet to 25 feet. In addition to the 23 foot houseboat, they also offered a 23 foot cabin cruiser model using that same tri hull used in the houseboat. You didn't show it in this video, but that houseboat had another single berth tucked in underneath the helm seat. They advertised it as sleeping five. Two on the pull out "gaucho" couch on the port side up front, two on the dinette that turned into a double bunk, and one in the single berth under the helm seat.
    I do recall that , while the exterior of the hull is fiberglass, there is quite a bit of wood used as stringers and structure inside that hull. You may find some rot in some of that once you get into it a ways. I also have a manufacturers brochure of that houseboat from that 1973 boat show. I'll dig it out and see if there is anything else of interest in it.

      I wouldn't touch this houseboat with a ten foot pole, but if he can get sponsored with epoxi, fiberglass etc it may be a decent way to generate content for the channel and have a nice little boat in the end as a bonus. But I'd rather spend three grand and all that work on something a little more long term useful like a big sailboat with a seized engine.

    • @Tyler-kw9ce
      @Tyler-kw9ce 3 роки тому

      @MAKO MIKE I guess we'd disagree then. I bring bananas fishing with me all the time on the boat and land more then my fair share of fish. But I've known many people to rename boats and go through the process of removing all traces of the previous name and doing the ceremony. I can understand the superstitions when people sail around the world or work on ships crossing the open ocean. But on a baby house boat inshore name it whatever you want and have at it.

    I have the identical boat, seems to be in a lot better shape but isn't running and has a few broken windows. I have the identical idea you did, and bought a tri axle trailer to cart it around from lake to lake (I live on lake cumberland, in southern kentucky). AFTER watching your restoration efforts, I've decided to sell mine, basically for about what I have in the trailer ($2500). The trailer has brand new trailer tires, bearings greased, etc., I spent a lot rehabbing the trailer. In an event, mine is a VIKING brand and trust me, it is identical to yours. Lots of parts and a great trailer.

      Hey man, i have an idea for the boat.......
      You could always leave that beauty exactly the way it is now.
      Well, you might want to do some exterior caulking especially around the ac.
      But just use her as a land camper. She's practically move in ready man!
      Clean er up of course;
      Vacuum, dust, clean widows & what not.
      Open windows & let her air out.
      Think of the time & money you'll save!
      No need for the motor. Scrap the motor and turn that space into a spare bedroom for guests or for a buddy who's Ben kicked out or whatever.
      Or a guy might want to rent out the spare room.
      Idk. You got all kinds of options!

      & hey.... a stripper pole might be kinda nice.
      Maybe a slide off the top deck?
      Idk. So many possibilities.
      Good luck & have fun!

      Personally, I like this old houseboat much more that the new overpriced pontoon boats. I think people love the idea of being able to use any type of chair or couch to make themselves comfortable. Then again you can just walk on a level floor to move around. This old boat offers protection from the wind, rain bugs and pretty much whatever mother nature decides to throw at you. Even at the age of 78, I am considering the thoughts of putting my 22' chrysler sailboat in the water this year and maybe spend some time on some small lakes and the Erie canal, even though I really don't know how to sail.
      Anyway,... Good luck with your new boat, I'm sure that you will have a lot of fun working on it and then getting it into the water!

And I clearly read his face as if this doesn't prove I'll do anything insane to make my channel grow. So I can't wait to see him walk in the steps I've been before, you'll know when it hits him I shouldn't even pick out what clothes I'm wearing today if I even thought this was a good idea when I was passed out drunk. But we'll know who he is if and when you can see I his face I don't know what everyone was worried about I knew this was the best idea I've ever had. That goes away quickly trying to keep up with everyday maintenance in the water.

      Said and believed by people who should never have owned a boat in the first place. Just sitting in your yard it is a movie not yet filmed. A book not yet written. A magic carpet to places many people will never see. Family legendary stories. Though it is true BOAT does mean Break out Another Thousand. Maintenance and observations can save a lot of that.

Make sure the rubber boot where the outdrive mounts to the inside of the transom gets replaced so you don't end in Davy Jones locker. Keep the red buoy on your right when going upstream lol good luck Capn.

    So, Steury made good quality boats when they were in business. When you go to replace appliances, toilet, cabinet latches etc. don’t forget you local RV dealership. They either have or can get much of what you need. West Marine will have your boat related items, but as you mentioned with the other boat, it’s a camper on a Jon boat and camper items means RV dealer. I must confess to being a mite jealous too! Congratulations!

    I owned a 44 foot houseboat for over 30 years. Keep the faith and fix her up over time. You will learn a lot of new skills and if you have friends who are electricians and such make use of their skills to help you through. First things to do will all relate to keeping water out of the boat. That means windows, roof and hull need to be completely waterproofed. Then you can start to work inside knowing your work won’t get buggered up by more water damage. Double check your transom for any rot and the engine compartment for waterproofing as well.
    Good luck. Bammer the Canuck
