I bought an EK Omnia a couple of weeks ago because I like the automatically changing of the grinding size which is awesome. 1. I tried to use it as single dose but the retention is very huge, from 17 grams of coffee, it came out only 12.5, after about 20 knocking it raised to 16. My model has the blue (plastic or sort of) spout. When I try to clear the spout, 2-3 grams of coffee comes out. 2. I also bought a portafilter holder for it. Here, the issue is that due to the very high static electricity, the coffee is spilled all over the place creating a very huge mess (even around the grinder itself), when grinding 16g of coffee into a 17 grams La Marzocco porafilter. It doesn't even compare with an E65 or E80 which creates a very nice and clean coffee stream into the portafilter during grinding. In conclusion, the grinder looks good (functionality, aesthetic, grinding speed), but I try to return it...
Hi there, thank you for sharing your feedback with us, sorry to hear about your experience. Unfortunately, large cooperation like Mahlkonig take a great pride in hearing feedback. They could have definitely listened to customers and witnessed the positive effect of having plasma generator/ ioniser to eliminate static electricity. The Omnia stack wonderful futures and it could be one of the very best commercial single dose grinders, but it is not there yet 💯
i hear from the distributors that mahlkonig are aware of the retention issues also and are working on it. personally it makes sense in a coffee shop but for home its a bit nuts still
@@mirceamarin4484 its actually not retained in the burrs but under the auger. one workflow solution is to take a blower (camera blower) and give that a few squeezes so as to assist the retained beans into the burr area. this works decently well most of the time. still a bit of a PITA
Hey guys! Awesome review! They fixed the chute exist piece with new one made of some type of plastic that doesn’t retain any coffee. I also have the same issue with difficulty of removing the burr carrier, I didn’t the same way you did (with 2 screw drivers) I though this is by design, it seems this is an issue? It’s very annoying as it makes it hard to clean.
Hey, yes, it is annoying and if you checo on Mahlkonig UA-cam channel, the burrs swap video showcase that the burr should go in and out smoothly with zero resistance. Generally speaking, we wouldn't mind if it was really tight fit and needed a bit of force, but we basically used brutal forced that could've even damage the grinder. 🤍☕️
Hey there, it would, and we did initially do that (Both filter and espresso were very nice, but espresso felt a bit too fast and we wanted to check for alignment)., However after taking the burrs out and getting the new burr carrier, swapping the burrs to the new burr carrier, alignment was a nightmare and we were not keen into testing them further as we wanted to provide an additional feedback for alternative burr option. 🤍☕️
For the stuck burr carrier issue, did you consider using a bearing puller or gear puller to remove it? It seems like it could have applied more controlled and even force compared to the screwdrivers. Do you think this could have worked, or was there not enough clearance to use such a tool?
Hi there, it will be wise to get in touch with the distributor, or try to use a screwdriver like we used in the video, insure it between the burrs and tilt it, yor burr caring might be slightly locked, for us, it was extremely locked.
I agree, it is not. @ourcoffeeshelter, are you also aware of the issue with the 3 calibration screws which are made of a way to soft metal, and thus after a while you will not be able to loosen them?
Hey, yes, generally 98mm burrs are very interesting in espresso, they might get boring after a while of being too clean, but you have other 98mm burrs options for that 👌☕️🤍
Hi there, it depends on the level of hardness, as you saw in our case with two screw drivers and full force, we barley got it out. In your case, it might be some coffee residual, try to cover the screwdriver with a cloth (to protect the burrs) and give it a gentle push, if it is stuck, then yes, the only option is with a new burr set.
Hmm would It make more sense to get the eg-1 for single origin coffee offerings using single dosing at a specialty cafe? Im torn between the two. Given you wouldn’t do big batches for bags or batch brew?
Regarding the alignment, was the grinder misaligned out of the box, or was it only after you replaced the burr carrier and installed new burrs? It wasn’t clear to me if the factory alignment was checked before making modifications.

For context, on my EK Omnia, the fixed carrier burr was perfectly aligned as-is, requiring no adjustments, while the movable burr needed just one shim. I’d consider that an excellent result for 98mm burrs and am curious how your results compared.
I understand that the grinding chute has more retention than the EK43. What about the grinding chamber and under the auger? Is the retention there also worse than the EK43, and if so, why do you think that is?
Yes, it's way worst. The chute gets clogged which generates a lot of chamber retention, which periodically gets loose and all those fines end up in your shot, ruining it. Under the auger a lot of coffee bean bits remain there. It never manages to fully push them into the burrs
I saw that the highest written grind size is 800 um, but most filter coffees use a grind size higher than 1000. When trying to grind that coarse, can screen display the size accurately? Does it need re-calibration?
Hi there, the dial indicates how many microns the burrs are being moved per number, basically with each number the burrs are getting away from each other by 1 micron. It does not mean that your ground coffee particles will be the same as the numbers being shown. For your reference, espresso was around 20 to 30 microns on the dial, V60 was around 200 to 250. 🤍☕️
Yeah, you're screwed. Those 3 screws for alignment and the backplate are made of a too soft metal so they stretch and become unusable. Mahlkoenig still does not want to recognise this big flaw.
If it won’t chirp, you may need to redo the zero setting. Check out the video Mahlkönig EK Omnia | Grind Size Fine Calibration for guidance. The stiffness could also be due to misaligned burrs or debris in the mechanism ?
@ i have atom w75 and i use the blow up it gives ~ 5 grams retention, however I noticed it is mixed between fine and coarse grinds. I made my shot faster.

Hi there, the EK43 is a different topic, but relatively speaking, our main point was to test this grinder with other burrs options. Tastewise and extraction on bottomless portafilters will always be the direct indication of performance. Comandante always argued that their conical burrs stabilise themselves while grinding. While there is truth for that, this does not eliminate the fact that their TrailMaster is not as aligned as their C40. ☕️🤍

The retention in the burrs enclosure is actually way worst. And periodically all that retained coffee goes loose and ruins your shot

I am a home user of the Omnia. May I know how can I ask for a new burr carriers from Mahlkonig? I can't take it out also.

Mahlkönig doesn´t provide an axial alignment tool, because they say it is perfectly aligned.

It does not come calibrated. Regarding alignment, they say it is not needed, but that is not true

I changed my burrs today but I can’t reach the chirp point the dial got really hard to move any suggestions?
