  • Baiae was the Sin City of the Roman Empire, where the rich and famous went to gamble, party, and soak in the famous hot springs. This video explores Baiae's best-preserved ancient buildings, which include what might be the oldest large concrete dome ever constructed.

*Fun fact:* Baiae was the location of a very curious anecdote related to Emperor Caligula. Before becoming Emperor, the madman met the famous astrologer Thrasyllus, who told him that he had "no more chance of becoming emperor than of riding a horse across the Gulf of Baiae". After becoming Emperor, Caligula ordered a 3-mile-long pontoon bridge to be built from impounded ships of the area, fastened together and weighted with sand, stretching from Baiae to the neighboring port of Puteoli. Then, Caligula, clad in a gold cloak, crossed it upon his horse Incitatus

It must be so much fun visiting these ancient sites and contemplating the history of the places.

It's been my dream to visit Rome and maybe other cities of old mainly to finally see for myself the relics of this old civilization. Nowadays I am unable to do so (for multiple reasons) and have no idea when such a trip would be available to me. So I want to thank you for this opportunity, to see these monuments and listen to their stories (if I were at the site myself, I wouldn't hear all the facts and history)! I've been following toldinstone for quite some time now, few channels/people do this how you do it - thoroughly and passionately.
Your work keeps my dream of seeing this myself alive, thank you !

I’m with you. I wish I would’ve done this kind of traveling in my 20s. I wasn’t very interested in history then though, but it still would’ve been cool. Now I just wish I could take a month or two and see some key places

What a melancholic vision of Roman architecture and joy of life. Despite its brevity, this film makes you wonder how earth models sensibility.

@@scenicroutestothepast It might be easier to visit the reclaimed statues and describe them for context and possibly relay their original location, since copies now reside where the statues were found. The tidbit about the sauna room of Nero's bath still functioning with its naturally heated water supply would also be of interest to viewers because frankly its stunning to realize such longevity. You add so many technical details not discussed outside academic circles, that is what makes your channels special. I never miss an episode and TiS gets priority above anything else on this platform.

And here I was thinking I really did well visiting Ostia but completing missed this site when we were so close by! Oh my. I'll have to somehow pick your brain for the best Julius Caesar sites across Europe. I came across one purported site in Egypt that is possibly linked to him (an inscription on a temple wall) but I have no idea who to contact that might know more about it and its authenticity. And what it even says in Latin. Keep up the amazing work! And feel free, as you can guess, to definitely highlight as many sites related to Julius Caesar as you can :)

i had read that new construction ideas were often tried on a smaller scale at Baiae first and that Nero took a keen interest in such ideas as well. Also as we can see the Temple of Mercury 'Temple of Echoes' is similar to what would later be built in Rome on a larger scale as the Pantheon. Fun fact about the Pantheon is that the concrete used was volcanic and so got harder with each passing year. Recent studies have shown that to be true in that the Pantheon is sturdier now than when it was built.

Excellent, thanks for bringing this site to light. Always enjoy Naples - underrated for history, overrated for risks - the best bang for the buck in terms of seeing cool Roman stuff has to be the 7 Campania Pass. This video gives us all another good reason to go back for another lash! Cheers.🙂

what are those holes in the walls in the dome for? i know a lot of holes were bored into limestone to make baking soda (?) or some sht but that appears to be concrete, and presumably more difficult to get to when the water level would've been lower. am i missing something here? their semi evenly spaced, perhaps it held up something decorative, dunno.

They were probably just used for light and ventilation, like the oculus of the Pantheon
