This channel is really the best at putting you in the shoes of an average person from history. Some channels tell the story of the great battles and great men, but this channel gives you a deeper insight into the average day in the life of a Roman. I really appreciate your work Toldinstone!
Well, John, more like putting you in the 'sandals' of an average person from that time!
"putting you in the shoes of an average person from history." I'm size 13 (UK) so I might not fit :P
@@fastertrackcreative Size 13 UK? Best of British Big Feet, next on Netflix! Can't wait!

@@cerberus6654 Well, Cerberus, more like putting you in the 'caligae' of an average person of that time!
is that a new logo? are those sound effects? you are certainly raising the quality of your podcasts! great work, and very enjoyable as usual!
I honestly don't like it. The old formula was better. I have ADHD, the background music distracts me. Suddenly switching pictures, unnecessary stuff.
@@JR-xn6yu I like the pictures but the music and sound effects need to be significantly quieter. As it is it's almost like a commercial where the music blares unreasonably loud.
@@JR-xn6yu I agree. The music is too loud and it’s overkill.
@@JR-xn6yu I concur. The new production style is very jarring. The music is too loud and the effects are also too loud in places where it feels like his voice is competing to be heard and completely takes away from the stories. I honestly struggled to take in the information provided at times A far cry from all the previous videos I've watched.
@@bonnylad1651 Agreed, that’s what made the last videos so good. They were simple
I like the rebrand! Very cool. Nice art too
I remember this like it was yesterday....
based on this first installment, a fantastic series is coming. Can't wait for more.
That was SO well done. 👏👏 I love how you took us through the daily routines of people from pompeii and really set the picture. It's also very relatable! Even 2000 years later... just shows how similar we are today to how people lived then and its thanks to those people we have what we do now. Thank you Rome for setting the stage for us. ✌️🤣 It's so crazy how easily you can imagine yourself playing out that day in the markets and almost feel the atmosphere. And in some ways the people of this era remind me of the victorians and their ingenuity. Canals and bridges and aqueducts. Awesome 👌
Diligent historian and consummate story teller, what a fantastic combination this channel is
Your writing is beyond excellent. These visuals compliment it well
New format is like a TV show at this point, I love creators like this who really put effort into their videos
That was incredible storytelling! Looking forward to the series.
This is your best work yet, without a doubt. I had no idea you were such a talented writer man. I was instantly captivated by every new character & story.
The father visiting his sons tomb was an especially poignant image.
Excited for part 2!!
Brother watching this channel grow from the walking tours to this has been a true pleasure. Well done. You deserve all the success given the consistent quality of your content.
What a great narrative history piece! I'll definitely keep an eye out for the next installments!
You're an insanely talented storyteller! You should consider doing a "day in the life" for Senators, gladiators & legionaries if you get the chance. The pictures were TOP QUALITY as well 👏
This is exactly the type of narrative history that brings the past into the present. I find myself remembering the details you present more than other channels because you make it possible to relate to people who lived and died in a different culture with different social values than I experience in my life. Excellent work!
I’m a fan of the new logo and intro
Pompei is one of the wonders of the world. Nowere on earth has history been preserved so untouched as in Pompei... All the houses, the people, art on walls, grooves in the road, everything how it was 2000 years ago...
Its a very special place. People always build and rebuild, so nothing realy preserves, except there... And the more i travel, the more special it becomes, because i understand how rare it is... if you visit Italy, Pompei ia definetly worth it... Its good on the scale of the world, not just Italy.
Dude the quality of this one jumped up like 10 fold. The video looks incredible but the jump in audio quality is superb.
Garrett, you're a talented storyteller indeed! You've taken us into the lives of these people, and onto the streets of Pompeii. Good storytelling is an art; well done.
Extremely well done, I've never read, heard, or watched anything as good at immersing you in the setting as this was, I commend your storytelling ability and breadth of knowledge about the ancient world. It's almost as if you've actually seen Rome somehow.
It all makes sense... those time traveler guides are speaking from experience. Toldinstone you got some 'splainin' to do bout your time crimes.
A secret treasured gem on the UA-cam’s. Such a great channel that REALLY takes you there. The details and the true imagination of a history lover. To help understand the world around us, we look to the past.
love your videos! u have a distinct way of storytelling
for 15 minutes, Pompeii was alive again.
I recommend publishing this script as a short novel. Wonderful work
I am simply in awe on how well this video is done.
Wow. The music and background audio really added to the experience. So cool.
Fabulous! I was watching Mary Beard's series on Roman Stelae inscriptions, and I couldn't help thinking of what you might do with such a project, which stones you would choose, which stories and details would come alive through your expertise.
That was GREAT! Thank you!
I was just in Naples this summer, absolutely amazing city. I’ve been all over Italy and it is one of my favourites. My host took me to a palace that was only rediscovered less than 50 years ago. It really took me back in time
Yesterday my seminar about the remains of Pompeii began, this is perfectly timed. Thank you for this great start into my archeology semester !
I love history and I prefer descriptions of mundane things than battles.
This video is perfect for me.
I really like this style of bringing Roman life back to reality. As if we truly were there and walking among the inhabitants.
If no one has told you before, though I doubt it, I'll tell you: your scripts are wonderfully and ingenously written. It is noticeable the bulk of work you put into it. Thank you.
Spectacular word artistry. Wonderful!!!
Dammmnnnn this is a 11/10 video my dude. Excellent work! I learned a lot!
Augh! A cliff hanger! I can’t wait for the next great instalment.
Wow! This is very well done.....I really like how you make the three people become tangible through your narration and with the sound effects in the background as they're going through their daily routines; it's like watching a movie in my mind's eye. Looking forward to part 2.
The must see aspect of Pompeii and Herculaneum is all the artefacts that are in the museum in Naples - I spent 2 days looking round - from the most basic cooking pot to elaborate statues jewellery and trinkets - a fantastic treasure trove Do not miss it as part of your visit to the region
This is really well narrated and very captivating. I like the contrast between the ordinary life and the Interruptions of the impending doom... thank you for your hard work! I look forward to the sequel :)
Toldinstone keeps getting better and better
Ever since i found this channel i cant stop watching. Really good work.
Mary Beard is phenomenal. I was hooked on her Rome series and wish it never ended.
I love the rebranding of this channel.
What an awesome upgrade! Magnificent story and excellent presentation, both aesthetics and in sound.
Congratulations and thank you for the big effort, can't wait to watch new episodes!
Garrett has don't it again!! ❤️🙏
I LOVE HISTORY!!!!
I love the way your story progressed from one person to the next. Ancient Rome has fascinated me ever since I first saw "Ben Hur" in 1960 at age 10.
That was excellent. I very hope that you will do more of these fantasy vignettes from ancient Rome.
Oh, damn a cliffhanger! Can't wait forever e the next part! Great job and channel.
I've seen that new Mary Beard documentary and it is excellent . It's the first documentary about Rome I've watched in a while that didn't make me "think not them again" .....
The way the story is told, the sound effects and pacing are all suoer well done. This'd make an excellent audio book narrator or such.
I disagree. The sound effects and music were too loud in parts and took away from the story.
This channel is literally therapeutic for me. Thank you for being the most informative channel on UA-cam
simply the gold standard of internet history content and it is all free !! please buy this man’s book !!!
This is one of your best videos yet, awesome production, awesome concept, love it! but I'm still waiting for part 6 of the time travellers guide to ancient Rome.
After this series, please do more for other events
Incredible video, the storytelling and narration are spot-on. You have a way of bringing history alive that I’ve seldom seen. Thanks!
Very immersive and quite entertaining. I enjoyed the ambient sounds of everyday life while you narrated, it truly put me on the street where I could enjoy the sights while not enjoying the smells.
This is unbelievable work. Thank you!
Excellent! Loved the mosaic pictures, the daily lives of the people, and your absolutely wonderful story of Pompeii. Can't wait for Volume II This is the way ancient history should be presented. So interesting! Thanks.
I love this. A roman slice of life. The way you flowed between characters is masterful and the sound effects are immersive.
That was extremely well done!!!
Im so impressed by your story telling, entrenched in the daily events of a ordinary morning of Pompeii edging at the catastrophic events we all know.
You made me feel part of me was there 2000 years ago.
You should be really proud of your work!!
We certainly are by sharing it!!
Can't wait to see the second part!!
Omg that cliff hanger!!!! So good
Superbly done! Very immersive and compelling.
This channel just keeps getting better.
I like your other educational videos as well, but I really LOVE this video. The pictures are nice, but I also like that I can just listen to this as a story with the sound effects. Maybe a podcast like this with totally visible historical stories?
this is so well done. very impressed by the new logo and sound effects!!
Very noticeable and welcome production increase.
I do very much like this audiobook style of narration, and although I know it's presumptuous to even think you might not, I do also hope you'll keep making the other less ornate, or rather the more direct, per se, videos too.
This was great to listen to while cooking
Just ordered your book- can't wait to get it💜 this reading is mesmerizing- am hurrying to listen to more!!
I'm digging this revamp of your channel. Also I'm loving the Roman and Renaissance artwork.
I've been waiting for this! More of that visceral time travelling from your retellings of the past.
Wonderful.
History For Granite sent me. Within the first minute, I can see why! Great stuff.
WOW. the quality of this one is incredible. Love the new mic and all of the effort put into the editing. this channel is going to be really big soon :)
I like the stories told from various Pompeiians point of view. The point of view of the lion who refuses to eat is obvious. All very clever.
I wanted to keep listening! This was great -- can't wait to hear the rest! Very descriptive, I could "see" it all.
Awesome video! All three stories were very interesting and their connections very fitting. I was a bit surprised by the changed logo (the old one was charming and inviting enough) but it does seem more apt given the name of the channel. The background sound effects are very neat addition albeit the music was a tad bit too loud here and there. Looking forward to part two!
What a gem of a channel. So glad I found this channel & extra appreciative of the time you take to add subtitles. It’s nice to have you tubers include deaf people !!
I feel like all the learning that we have had from this channel has brought us to this immersive read. My vote for your read of Suetonius' 12 Caesars!
You’ve got me VERY excited for the upcoming few weeks! Your content has Never disappointed and I feel this latest direction is going somewhere good
I love how engaging this video is. Thanks much!
This is so vivid and relatable. I love it!
This mans Garrett is popping off now with the videos!!! Background songs? Yes. Oh yes
I have a love for Pompeii, and I don't know why. Never been to Italy but always wanted to go. Thanks for giving us a peek.
Captivating narration, love the style :)
I love the storytelling quality of this episode. Where is the next one?
Absolutely brilliant, thanks for your wonderful storytelling.
More fantastic storytelling! I enjoyed the background street noise! 👍
This was absolutely brilliant!
You tell these stories so well, and showing high-quality images for > 5 seconds works wonders for immersion. Great videos.
Having been to Pompeii this video brought back so many memories. The story was excellent. I could see everything so clearly in my mind.
Another great video. You have a wonderful habit of turning history into something that modern people can feel. Looking forward to part two!
This video was spectacularly well done! The channel rebrand looks great as well!
0:56 - Nice little detail in this painting. Those aren't buildings in the background, those are tombs. The people are taking shelter in a mausoleum.
i love the change of format! this is really done, good job!
You remind me of my past professors. Thank you so much
this was grand thank you very much from Milwaukee Wisconsin USA
What a leap in quality. Well done
Love these kinds of videos of day to day people. Keep it up please!
Exceptionally high quality video! Not that the others are poor, there's just a lot of polish on this one. Great job, as always
You have a great voice. I love listening to your stories. I can't wait for the next installment! 😁
Honestly passed by this video in my feed cause I didn’t recognize it as one of yours but I love the new design and logo!
