18:03 Scharnhorst actually had 6 x 533 mm torpedo tubes that it carried on the side next to the aircraft catapult, aside from that minor error, great job recreating the ship!
Regarding the positioning of the 104mm AA, one of the twin mounts overlooked the rear primary turret, mounted on a rearward facing platform on the superstructure. Also, Scharnhorst carried torpedoes. Six tubes in two triple-mount launchers, on either side of the ship, 20.99999999999999999999999999-inch torpedoes.

To me Scharnhorst is the most beautiful ship ever made. There is a sense of elegancy in her design mixed with brute force, but not too much. Just enough to make her appear threatening without it overshadowing her sleek lines. And these turrets... A match made in Wilhelmshaven.
Oh she is such a beauty. I would never question the mighty Drach, but i could have sworn that she got 2×3 torps in '42 not sure which year the compilation is set in? But great video as always!
24 July 1941 Scharnhorst was damaged by RAF raid. While the damage was being repaired, a new radar system was installed aft, the power output for the forward radar was increased to 100 kW, and the 53.3 cm torpedo tubes were installed.
Loved the video @Brother Monro! Can't wait to see how the Strasbourg goes or how the Scharnhorst handles in the fight! At least Scharnhorst won't be dealing with Battleship HMS Duke of York, Heavy Cruiser HMS Norfolk, Light Cruisers HMS Sheffield, HMS Belfast and HMS Jamaica and Destroyers HMS Saumarez, HMS Scourge, HMS Scorpion and HMNoS Stord (Formerly HMS Success) like she did, Historically, at the Battle of North Cape on December 26th, 1943. Which comes to 1 King George V-class Battleship, 1 County-class, Norfolk-group Heavy Cruiser, 1 Town-class, Southampton-group and 1 Town-class, Edinburgh-group Light Cruisers, 1 Crown Colony-class, Fiji-group Light Cruiser and 4 S & T-class, S-class group Destroyers attacking the lead ship of the Scharnhorst-class Battlecruisers/Battleships. Truth be told, the Germans in world war two always bumped up the classification of their ships by the next rung up; just look at The Admiral Hipper-class Heavy Cruisers, they were put down as Battlecruisers when they were actually just Heavy Cruisers, same with the Bismarck's, the Germans called them Super Battleships when they were just normal/Modern Battleships. With my little rant aside, you guys did a reasonably good job, I'm just wondering if you've managed to squeeze in her 2 Triple mount Torpedo Tubes by her after superstructure, which were 40-44 Knot Torpedoes with a Range of about 8,250 Yards (24,750 Feet or 7,615.38 meters) with storage for 18 of the G7a Wet Heater Torpedoes.
I think her advantage in thickness and quality of main armor will more than compensate for whatever her 11” guns give up to her older competitors that field larger guns. Renown’s 15”s hit harder but between having only 6 of them, and the higher shell weights slowing the loading, she can’t throw enough, fast enough. Kongo just doesn’t have the protection for a stand-up fight - whether plunging fire against the deck or closer in against the belt, Scharnhorst’s 11” should go through quite nicely while her own armor does much better against Kongo’s 14”
I was gonna say that, but then saw your comment. All the time Drach was searching for the last pair, I was screaming (internally): "It's centre-mounted, you can use the barbette of the secondary tower!" XD
scharnhorst always had 14 of the 4,1 inches in all iteration - so 7 gun mounts the 7th is always been behind the aft main gun, in game would put it where the big gunmount is with the boats.
I tried making Iowa and it was incredibly hard... Funnily enough too, my Iowa had worse FC, worse bulkheads, worse armour (especially barbettes) and worse range than the real Iowa. I was like, 'How tf do you cram all of this into 58,400 tons displacement?'
The game extrapolates and approximates a *lot* of naval design. For example, it doesn’t allow player to decide how many individual watertight compartments to divide a ship into, and instead just uses “few” to “maximum” bulkheads. How many compartments did Iowa have? If you can’t match that number, you’re getting screwed. Also: by the time of the Iowas, US naval propulsion had done astoundingly well at high-output low-mass machinery. But I think UAD seems to assume that power/unit mass is a constant in any given decade, so getting Iowa’s 212000shp requires machinery that is 3/4 again as massive as the machinery that produced 121000shp in the NoCar. But that just wasn’t true.
you all should re-do this in beta 1.05, I was able to fit the secondaries on by expanding the beam. the variable beam and draft make many historical designs much easier to pull off.
Everything I’ve read (particularly MJ Whitley’s German Battleships of WW2) says the Scharnhorsts got single-reduction geared turbines because the Germans still had not mastered double-reduction gearing. Also, the class was notoriously unbalanced forward, to the point that in anything about sea state 4 they shipped green water over the bows as far back as B barrette. It was so bad that during several actions, A or even A and B both would be put out of action by water coming over the bow and flooding into the turrets. Her secondary armament was not all mounted in turrets, but I guess UAD says “all guns of a certain size come in a turret.” Finally, if you *did* have access to 5.9” guns, their turrets wouldn’t fit where they are on the hull.
Why don't you try the "light" shells to see how much off a difference it makes if they are too heavy as "Standard" what if its only like 40-50 kg lighter? So it would be perfect?
If you let her close the gap on the heavier gunned ships with lesser armor... She's going to nickel dime them and steal their lunch money! But at range... 😬
Seeing the build its hard to remain true to my convictions that kongo is going to win. While I want to say kongos maybe got it, I think it's far more rational to say that this is either going to scharnhorst or Renown.
Sorry to have missed the torpedoes! My fault for using a 1940/41 plan!
I would have turned them off anyway 😂
@@BrotherMunro I wouldn't. They're the wild card vs the Strausburg.
I’ve always had a soft spot for the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau so I’ve been waiting for this episode
I have a soft spot for any ship that ran The Channel.

One thing we don’t cover in the actual video is the 15 minutes of conversation we have about what hull to use 😂
@@BrotherMunro how many could you chose? also lol thats like half the video of deciding on a hull lol
I believe that the Scharnhorst had torps near the catapult. Beautiful ship!

*this will cause some comments* - yeah it will! love the look of a BC hull. fits nicely

I love Scharnhorst specifically. Look forward to watching!
I really enjoy this series. It's interesting to see how real ship designs do/don't work in UAD.
I was building scharnhorst just today, the narrow hull is very annoying when in comes to secondaries
Looking forward to the beam adjustment!
That's really my one bitch about German towers is they're too wide without manual beam adjustment.
@@heirofaniu they are so fat 😂
The 4" guns were actually center mount superfiring over the aft main turret.
EDIT: Ok, corrected at the last minute! Nice
Imagine if those Dreadnought era builders had this technology and tools to design their ships....

These 2 sisters are some of the best looking ships in WW2, too bad they don't have her hull form in game yet.
Scharny actually had torpedoes. 3 12" tubes per side. I am kinda sad drach forgot this xD

Weren't scharnhorsts armed with 5.9in [150mm] guns?
A battlecruiser to represent Scharnhorst, I'm offended
Fact Scharnhorst had more Armor then Bismarck by 2” Bismarck 13”, Scharnhorst 15”
