I'll go for a MacBook Air instead. It's much cheaper than the iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard. If I have to get an iPad because of the Pencil, I'd just buy the vanilla model or the iPad Air.

If there is no trade-in for the crazy expensive magic keyboard if a new one is out, then naaah, not iPad for me and the M1 iPad pro is waaaaay cabable of everything I through at it.
I think I’ll upgrade my M1 to M2 for storage and the Apple Pencil cursor… but probably next year. Absolutely love my current iPad

Thank you. And while I can’t speak for every creator, even those who don’t illustrate this stuff are almost certainly doing it for the same reasons. It’s important to give creators the benefit of the doubt on this stuff - we just want to make awesome free content and build profitable businesses 😉
For me, until Apple ditches the browser WebKit requirement, the iPad is never going to be anything more than a companion device. I can't use certain websites on an iPad for work, so I'll hold onto my 15 inch MacBook Air for the time being.
I totally second you. MacBook Air is still way cheaper than the iPad Pro and it runs proper desktop OS instead of glorified iOS for tablets.

Thanks for the great advice. How do you feel about the Air M1? I’m happy with the Air that I bought about 6 years ago. I’d like to wait for the larger screen on the soon-to-be M2 with 12.9” and Oled (would I really see a big difference), but I’m getting tired of waiting and more confused about what to buy. I have an iPhone 15 plus, so wanted to upgrade my iPad as well, but this is ridiculous. Thanks!
Always enjoy a Mark Ellis Reviews video. I have the M2 11" iPad Pro. I use it as an iPad ( verses a MacBook replacement) the only thing that bugs me is the camera location. I block Face ID every time. I don't think that is enough to convince me to upgrade since it's only a few months old.
I'm using a 2021 12.9" that I got mainly because I wanted the better contrast of the mini-LED XDR display. However, I want to go back to an 11" as it's easier to use sat on the sofa/in bed etc. I've been waiting for the Pros to go OLED so I'm ready to pull the trigger next week (or whenever). Any other new features will be a bonus. Looking forward to your review when it finally happens.
My iPad is about 10 years old and finally failing. I’ll be happy with an M1, M2, M3 , M1.5, etc.,
I have an 2018 iPad Pro 11” and i plan on upgrading. Once they were rumored to have OLED, I’m all aboard. I wanted the M2 12.9” but I’m glad i held out until the M3 versions

Also Mark have you ditched the Beats Studio pros? If so why as I saw you had reverted back to Sony’s xm5’s and am wondering why?!

I’m still on iPad Air 3rd gen. It’s my 3rd iPad and never thought I’d use it as much. I’d like more memory, usb-c and a way to view my SD card camera files easily. The files app has improved but I’d like it to be more capable like windows explorer. Any ideas?
I keep saying this: in order to remain competitive the IPad should be a productivity tool that can rival a laptop and a gaming beast that can compete with handheld consoles like the Steamdeck.
I am thinking of getting a refurbished M2 12.9 inch pro to replace a 2020 11” pro. It would be for the bigger screen for art/video editing/procreate dreams. ( and would also be again my sole device - phone aside - don’t have a mac/pc). Thinking M2 over M1 for longevity in OS support. Wondering if I wait til the new models are out and selling I’d be able to pick up a better bargain on a refurb? Or will the price not change much between then and now? Thinking I will miss the smaller sized ipad for just general computery use as it’s a nice, comfy size but would like a bigger screen for the arty stuff. But I would sell the small one to put towards the bigger ipad.
In other words, if you already have an M-series iPad Pro, then no, upgrading isn’t really worth it.
Im new to ipads, i bought an apple pencil 2 for myself because i was buying everything in parts. But life lifed me so i only have the pencil and have been waiting on this new ipad for a year now. Excited to see that it could possibly be released soon so i will wait until the end of april. If nothing happens then ill get the m1.
I only bought the M2 iPad Pro 12.9” this time last year so I am good with that for a few years.I am waiting for the iPad mini 7 though but according to rumours that’s not expected until September/October.
My M1 iPad died this week. I’m now acutely aware of just how important of a device it is to my work flow 😊
A very good advice
I now have the iPad Pro 11 inch from 2018, but I am now hesitating whether to buy the Galaxy Tab S9 Plus or an iPad again, but the new one with OLED? the Tab S 9 Plus will be cheaper and I only use my iPad Pro for TV and streaming, which is why I want an OLED screen, and I surf the internet and view emails and light office work such as Word and Excel. what would I do?
I have the m1 iPad Pro and the biggest temptations are oled sure, but really the camera being in the right damned spot!
Dilemma for me. Been using the 12.9 due to the better screen. The size is just too unwieldy to use as a "tablet". I want to go back to the 11" which I can do with no out of pocket costs with this current generation. Or do I wait until next week to see if an 11" with upgraded screen comes out Tuesday. Problem is, there will most likely be a cost bump...Decisions!
I use my 11” M1 almost daily for content or drawing as a hobby… i`ll be switching to 12,9” M2 or M3 when the next one comes out which is soon`ish (i know), depending on the upgrades and the deal i get… I just want the bigger screen, and as a techie who works in retail, i also like new stuff

Great video Mark. I think your recommendation is sound and well-reasoned. Me? I'm sticking with my M1 iPad Air. It does all that I need. However, I did end up getting the iPad mini after watching your video and I have to say it is my favorite iPad to use by far.

I already have the M1 iPad Pro. So I don’t feel the urge to to upgrade at this time. If I do feel the need to upgrade, I just get the M2. Mainly for the improvements in the screen. Unless there is some vast improvement in iPadOS , I don’t see the need for an M3. But I am not running a video or audio production facility.

I had a very specific doubt if you can help. What would you suggest if there's a choice between M2 Ipad Pro 12.9 inch or M3 Ipad Pro 11 Inch. Just normal usage. I just need a good screen and 120Hz display.
There's not much difference between M2 and M3, especially in iPadOS environment. Really, it's all down to your screen size preference.
My issue w the current iPad is the camera cannot capture spatial video. Seems like the AI boom is in full swing, it seems like a real upgrade to the current model will happen in about 2 years w AI features.
I bought the 11” M2 iPad Pro 256 GB just this month despite being aware of the rumors of a new one coming soon. This is my first ever iPad, let alone an iPad Pro. I bought it not really as a need, but more of as a commemoration of my first year of working - something I can use with the most versatility (i.e., content consumption, hobbies like drawing and video editing, and work in case of emergency).
Things I wanted:
1) 120 Hz refresh rate
2) Longevity in terms of performance and support
3) Just enough storage
4) Great screen (doesn’t have to be the best of the best)
5) Best quality iPad that I can afford/willing to pay for
The reasons I bought it now instead of waiting:
1) Waiting time. It’s going to be a long wait. No announcement yet, and hypothetically even if it’s announced and released now, it will take another month or so before it becomes available in my country
2) Price hike. Given the rumored specs of the new iPad, it is inevitable that there will be a price hike. Even just a $200 price hike on the base model is enough to put me off
3) Discount. I was able to buy the latest iPad Pro for cheaper anyway due to the discount which made the current model already worth it enough.
4) Priorities. Other than the things I listed as what I wanted, every thing else in the rumored new model is pretty minor. The landscape configuration of the camera, a more overkill processor, a very negligible adjustment on the bezels, and OLED display (though is a great thing to have) are not enough for me to not only wait, but also pay for a premium. Paying for a premium for an already premium product is something I can’t justify to myself as of right now.
5) Accessibility to accessories. Hypothetically, if I was able to wait for the new iPad Pro, I would still have to wait for all these third party manufacturers to develop the accessories that I actually like. I’m using the Benks keyboard with my iPad, not just because it’s way cheaper, but I genuinely prefer its protective capability, the ability to remove/snap on the keyboard, and have a kickstand and pencil holder on the case itself. I doubt products like this will be readily available as soon as the actual iPad Pro drops - especially since it is rumored to have a different dimensions, which means you can’t really use the current cases we have now.
If I had a say or a choice, I would keep the micro LED, but push the screen resolution to 4K on the iPad Pros.
I got the M1 iPad Pro, I'll just wait till the M4 iPad Pro
I find the ghosting on the existing iPad Pros to extremely distracting. It is made more conspicuous by the higher refresh rate. The same is true for MacBook Pros. The displays do not handle motion adequately.
correct it is atrocious and there is no excuse for it on such an expensive product
OLED should overcome this. That's the decision point for me. I'll be getting the new iPad Pro.

@@realMartinHamilton Agree. I will probably also get one. I have a Samsung tablet currently primarily because of the poor iPad displays. I am surprised more reviewers don't call it out. I think reviewers think it isn't something that most people notice, but I think they are wrong. People see it, but most don't understand that it could and should be better.
I have the M1 Pro and that is still amazing! I use it everyday, and yes as a laptop. It’s my number one computer and I don’t need more. Used the M2 and couldn’t find anything different except the hover pencil pointless thing. If Apple bring out the M3 it’s going to have to have something ultra superb about it for me to buy one!

The M1 iPad Pro is what I am using and it works fine. I love my iPad Mini 6 also.
I just picked up a 12.9 today, I know the new one is coming next week, But this was 100 off already and I got the logitech combo touch for 128 at best buy on sale. I'm okay with not getting the newest model coming soon.

I'm back in the Apple ecosystem in over a decade and my last iPad was the Air 2 or 4 lol. I'm holding out for the new Pro because the OLED screen alone is worth it!
I had an 2018 iPad Pro and then switch to the iPad mini 6 when came out and I don’t change my iPad mini for nothing in the whole entire world
I think the problem with the iPad Pro is that with the current form of the iPad OS we have reached peak iPad.
Last year for the first time I went on a trip without a laptop and only an M1 iPad Pro. I shot about a 500 Gb of video and photos. Wrangling the photos using the files app was painful and took an eternity. There was also no easy way to cull photos / videos. FinalCut Pro, Lightroom and CCOne just have too many limitations.
In the end I really missed my Mac and think I would have been better off with even just an M1 MacBook Air.
And that's the problem with the iPad Pro. It works well for some niche pro applications but other than that it's mainly a media consumption, reading / PDF annotation, drawing / note taking device with some gaming. And for that the M1 iPad Pro is plenty fast.
Perhaps with the future direction of AI integration and perhaps more freedom in the iPad OS things will shift towards the higher end devices and I really do hope so. I think the form factor and versatility is great. However in the current package there just isn't a compelling reason to upgrade.
It needs to be a big year for iPadOS, I agree. And I think it will be.

The 11 inch "Pro" was never really a pro model because it didn't have mini led, hopefully now with introduction of OLED it will take it's rightful place in the pro line-up.
I have a 2018 iPad Pro that collects dust because I brought an iPad mini that I adore and take everywhere with me. So no I will not buy the pro but will wait for the mini 7 which I will upgrade and get more storage and have WiFi & cellular on it.
New keyboard needs function row. Buttons for play/pause, volume, brightness, would be really really useful. New pencil is likely required for a landscape camera, and landscape camera would be really useful for the vast number of video meetings we have these days. So there are probably quality of life improvements to be had. But agreed, the M1 iPad Pro is a fantastic bit of kit, and does not require more performance. But will it miss out on future AI goodness?? and will OLED deliver better battery life or lighter weight on newer model?? I'd say wait and see what comes this spring, the prices for the M1/M2 models will likely fall further when the new shiny comes out.

In accordance with my personal requirements, I am currently utilizing the M1 Pro. However, I am contemplating withholding further investments until the newer version of the iPadOS is released, coupling with the impending developments in technological applications that authorize Adaptive Intelligence. Instead of upgrading my current set up, I will most likely allocate the finances towards buying the M3 Studio Ultra in the future. Endowed with a GPU upgrade, the M1 Max also piques my interests, yet I am reluctant to triple down on something that may be subject to obsoleteness before its time due to potential murmurs of instability with the new OS on the said device.

The dual layer OLED display is the biggest reason to buy the new iPad Pro. Better than Mac Book's display.
