I found a pretty decent sized Monstera *ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD* last year. I slammed in the brakes (really) whipped a u turn and somehow wrestles that f’er into the way back with a lil help from my then 5 year old. I’m sure it was HILARIOUS to watch. Now, she has really bounced back. I sorta just cleaned her up and set her down. Now she’s a mess. I get like 2-3 new leaves every 4-6 weeks. She’s just *s p r e a d* out all her leaves and I’m sure the roots are a jumbled mess. This got me started in the right direction. Thank you SO MUCH for this video. As always, it’s helping me get started me in the right direction. Also, I garden in the living room floor too. I have a tarp and all that to help with mess, but apartment/condo living sucks Sonya gotta do whatcha gotta do. My husband hates it, but knows HE will be the one schlepping the plants up and down the stairs so he deals with it!😊
I recently bought a Monstera with five stems that was leaning heavily to one side, almost crawling out of the pot. I had a hard time finding the right space for it, so I chopped off all the leaning stems, and attached the remaining two to a pole. That thing is going to grow the way I want it to grow!
I recently rescued my first monstera on the half-price end-of-summer last-one-available impulse buy and girl she's a mess JUST like this one. So i jumped on here and started binging yours and Mr Sheffield's monstera videos. I LOVE how you guys add dry humor to your information, and the part where you blast the delicate precious baby with the hose freaking kills me. Been looking for it again and I'm so happy i found it! Thank you for your content, you are appreciated!
I live in Florida - and what you bought is how monsteras grow naturally when planted in a yard. If part of it is near a tree it will grow Up. But mostly they develop into a few big trunks that look like they have fallen over - maybe with a bit of an arch. These lovely indoor plants you all shape - are just that - shaped like a bonsai or an apple tree trained to grow flat and horizontal on a wall...
That's the fun of it! To be fair, houseplants aren't exactly natural. They aren't supposed to be in pots in our houses. It's so much fun to bring in nature and adapting it to our living environment. I love nature in the wild, but at home I like my nature tamed.
I always enjoy your videos. Your dry, witty sense of humor is so charming! I think I enjoy watching you because you seem to be just a dude who loves plants and wants to share tips, but you don't try to pretend your life is perfect, your home is perfect, so you're plants must be perfect. My plants are definitely not perfect, so this is the channel for me! Thanks for your hard work on these videos!
These are some very good ideas that I will certainly use - especially laying the plant and bark pole (I have several) down to tie them together. The plant you chose is very much like one I’ve managed to somehow cause the same state on my own. Smh. Thanks for sharing your expertise. Love your channel and dry wit. Your beleaguered (I chose to use this word instead of wtf 😝) stares directly into the camera crack me up! 😂😂😂
I recently bought a monstera growing in different directions. Going to wait until spring to give it a repot and pole mostly because it's big and I'm lazy.
@@KillThisPlant Absolutely - I always thought I had to buy one of those special stakes to support the plant - it never occurred to me to use a tree branch.
Thank You for such eloquent instructions. Brief and packed with great info. I am new to the plants, watched a few of Your videos and have already learned a pile!
When you attempt to save a plant waiting two months is waiting for a quick death of the plant. The problem is in the big box stores the plant has already been mistreated/ overwatered/ rootrot and is decline. Big box stores are not spending money for training in the plant area. Anyway, you have to take steps to correct this. You are correct in saying you don't need to go to a larger pot size.
I guess I should have clarified this plant didn't come from a big box store, didn't show any signs of root rot, or fungal infections. But you'd be surprised by how quickly more sun, an antifungal spray, and foliar fertilizer can solve that problem without any other intervention. Maybe that's for another video.
Enzymes! For root rot- kind of just changed my life Also using that sprayer on the roots usually saves me tons of time Your videos are my favorite!! I watch them regardless of the subject
I split up and repot mine into three part this weekend and thats what the roots looked like. Idk why i gave myself 2 hours of daylight to do it. Wnded up taking at least 5 to 6 hours combined (had to continue the next day) so wish me luck on their recovery!
Lol Lee 🤣 I said outloud like way back filming Lee could hear "soon the aireal root down!" I swear I'm always ticking in the roots but they root so fast and fed my plant it's worth it
Dumb question: Is it possible to use one Monstera as a kind of pole for an other one when they have a similar size? I recently bought a Monstera pot and the backsides of the stems are facing each other... Just wonder if it will look messy when I let them grow this way.
I think it will look cool. When they are planted to grow naturally in Florida no one is worried if they look messy - its their natural state to each look unique
@@TheGypsyVanners I've never seen a Monstera growing natually... Germany isn't the optimal spot for them. ^^; Just asked because Lee said in an other vid that they grow better, when they have a pole.
At some point when your Monstera becomes unstable it will start to revert to smaller leaves. So you can try it if but another stem won't be as stable as a stick or a wall or a tree.
@@KillThisPlantI have two absolute beasts that I adopted at never staked, utterly contorted, and they grow the biggest leaves you could ever hope for. If large monsteras somehow revert and produce smaller leaves, my plants haven’t heard this fact.
I like to put only one plant in a pot. If you grow it up a moss pole or direct the aerial roots into a separate pots you will have an easier time chopping it up whet it becomes too tall. You will already have roots.
I would like to ask you about the branches you are using for plant support. I really like how it looks, but I am worried about pests it might carry. Do you treat it after bringing home? If so,how? Thank you
I buy these from a store so I don't treat them, but if you were to find them you can soak them in water and hydrogen peroxide. Search for aquarium channels and how they treat wood before putting it in their tanks.

Hot water on your roots is not a great choice. Was it ready for a bigger pot? What pest was it? there aren't many soil pests that you can actively see that could actually harm your plant.
