The Overture from Bridge Too Far composed by John Addison. Wonderful film directed by Richard Attenborough. It also includes one of the greatest casts of all time.
Best war film ever, the best theme music ever and what a great cast. Arnhem was never destined to be a successful operation but due to the sacrifice and bravery of those that fought there it was a very close run thing!
Its failure was never a done deal...two elements doomed it.Failure of allied intelligence to accept the presence of IInd SS corps in Holland, and the lack of a bold drive up from Nijmegen as soon as the bridge was taken.1st Airborne did its part 100%.
"We're going to fly 35,000 men dropped them 63 miles behind enemy lines. It'll be the largest airborne drop ever mounted....quiet frankly this sort of thing has never been attempted before."
Military disasters are always interesting because lots of people valiantly struggle and tragically die in vain. Any story that can emotionally connect you with doomed characters is almost always great.
Willard Jansen A classic, made all the more poignant because the composer John Addison was a tank commander. He took part in Market Garden with the 23rd Hussars.
What can Music theory tell us about the grace of this? Nothing. It may be composed und arranged perfectly. But one can never catch that certain embrace of heroism, bitter losts, and solace lying in this wonderful composition by any kind of theory.
John Addison participated in Market-Garden as a member of XXX Corps. One of the greatest war movies ever. "Centennial" music is lights-out as well. "Theirs Is the Glory" 1946 is worth checking out. Flick features many actual combatants such as Johnny Frost.
'He's got to be tough enough to do it and he's got to be experienced enough to do it. Plus one more thing. He's got to be dumb enough to do it... Start getting ready.'
There are countless great war themes including this one, but mentions of 'Band Of Brothers' , 'Where Eagles Dare', 'Is Paris Burning', 'Dam Busters' and 'The Great Escape' all rate very highly indeed.
Although flawed in many ways, it's conveyance of the bravery and resilience of the 6th Airborne, 82&101 Airborne was excellent. But the music has to be once of best in production of pride and confidence!
Much as i liked James Caan RIP,i did feel he was given WAY too much screen time,in what was a quite minor part of the story.Obviously Redfords role as Maj Cook was a pivotal episode in the battle, but Sgt Dohun was a minor thing.
I think Attenborough ought to have put a little more thought into the opening titles a bit though.Just white lettering on a black background a bit unispiring.A montage of WW2 images etc, would have set the scene better...
The people that disliked, I don't even know why you clicked on this masterpiece. If you don't like good music click off this right now.
Let's send em to gulag !!
they didn't listen to the music
Remember watching this in 70mm with my father!
Probably because theres no shitty autotuning or Nicki fucking minaj.

One of the finest marches ever written for one of the best movies. Brilliant!

The XXX Corp bringing you the best in adult entertainment.
You're right ! Even the picture for the video says "recommended as Adult Entertainment".
The grand music always conceals a horrible reality of disastrous war,but sppreciate a soul melody of this music regardless of any results!
Finest piece of music ever written. Those who know music theory will agree. Those who just enjoy great music will agree too.
Willard Jansen can confirm, tuba gets melody
Yep in an amazing counterpoint.

If it sounds good, it is good.

"General! What of the Germans!? Don't you think that if we know that Arnhem is so crucial to their survival, they might know that to?"
I love the part where it goes to what must be the paratroop dropping music half way through, the key change is awesome.

Un chef d'oeuvre monumental à la gloire des héros qui se sont battus pour nous. Dieux que j'aurais voulu en faire partie!
Vraiment mon brave
one of the greatest miltary operations with the most amount of "what ifs".
Hail Mary full of grace... Hail Mary full of grace...
I have loved this music since the first time I heard it in the theater back in 1977
class job, and what an overtune
Bloody brilliant.,without the sacrifice of the brave boys who took part in market garden. It may have been very different indeed.
This renews the memories of the military life that I went through.
Epic Battle Epic Film!!!
RIP Sean Connery
I love this piece

They dropped the Paratroopers over Models HQ? Good work indeed,But,the operation never gone as plan,it was never captured!
In a sense the music is the wrong way around, the paratroops came first then the ground force..still an awesome symphony.
