- The main theme to the HBO series Band of Brothers - Requiem for a Soldier - sung by Katherine Jenkins on 10th November 2007 at the UK's Royal British Legion Festival, an annual event held at London's Albert Hall commemorating those who have served in the armed forces & who have given their lives for our liberty. Taken from a live BBC1 broadcast.
Every student in America and every person that wants to become an American should be required to watch Band of Brothers .

And The Pacific, which is a little more gruesome/impacting (not saying that Band of Brothers or Saving Private Ryan is not impacting) but we need to continue making a list of shows (or books). People need to know what people did for this country.
To my father, who came ashore at Omaha Beach on 6 June 1944 and who lived with that fact until the day he died. He and his generation were the reason I followed him into uniform and served for almost 30 years.
RIP Dad and for you and you brethren of the Greatest Generation: May God Bless and Keep you Always, and may you never be forgotten.

To my father who was crippled in the run-up to D-Day, died a premature death in 1970, and never got to see his grandson, born on June 6, 1994, 50 years to the day after D-Day. .
To my father who has been a ghost in my life. An armored infantryman in Patton's Third Army, he was severely wounded in his neck and lower back by shrapnel from a German potato masher. He never recovered and ultimately took his own life when I was two. May the Almighty bless and keep the families who have lost a soldier/family member in war. 😔

Everyone who goes to war is wounded, one way or another.. Some die in war but don't know it.. they come home and die again by their own hand.. A WWII infantryman lived next door to me when I was a kid.. When he was about 45 or so, he killed himself.. He never ate chicken.. I asked him one time why not- stupid kids ask adults about such things. He told me while in Europe, he saw chickens peck the eyes out of dead men and he swore he'd never eat chicken again.. Every soldier is wounded, regardless of army..
My grandfather served in Patton's third ID, .50 Cal gunner on jeep. He fought in the bulge, all the way into Berlin. Never talked about it except for the bitter cold in Bastogne.

Visited the battle of Britain memorial. My surname is Leslie. Saw a guy only 18 years old lieutenant Leslie a spitfire or hurricane pilot but he was shot down by the luftwaffe

While visiting Normandy France with my family back in November 2019 I thought about all the soldiers (boys) that died on the very ground I was freely able to walk on, and thought about this song alot.. It brought tears to my eyes and shiver up my spine at same time… What terribly brave for them take on at 18,19,20 years old.. I just say what honor and thank you to all of you that sacrificed so much for our freedom.. God bless all those buried in those cemeteries..❤

william lydon my dad is and always will be my hero! My dad decided that the day after he graduated high school he joined the U.S. ARMY during the Vietnam war. He still will not tell me anything about it except that 58,000+ of his brothers died there!
I always thought that the meaning of the word hero is that someone who saves a life without thinking of any rewards for doing the right things. Men who sacrificed their lives for a greater cause is, in my book, is the real meaning of being a hero, not the men who played sports. To all who serves and protect our country and to all who wears the uniforms of the military community, on behalf of the astronomical community, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE.
Today if you get into trouble, you get publically or privately disgraced and quite possibly fired, quite the contrary in years past if you crossed the line or stood up to something - you got killed, maybe very slowly and so did those of your family and maybe village. Bravery today is measured by going along with popular trends for which no price is to be paid and for which no failure is conferred. Lord Gordon put it all on the line and he was rewarded with a terrible death, mutilitation and a mere footnote in the history books, today a forgotten hero who took no gold for his victories.
True, just about every man in my neighborhood served in WW II and none of them ever spoke of 'heroic actions' or bloody gore, they knew that even the toughest man could be killed in combat circumstance by a 15 cent bullet that had his name on it! No, they considered the dead and gravely wounded heroes and of themselves as being lucky survivors!

I always felt that the heroes were not the guys who got the parades, like Eisenhower, MacArthur. They were, after all, career soldiers whose job was to fight wars. And, in some cases, never heard a shot fired in anger. The heroes are the guys who didn't want to be there but did it anyway. Some were good soldiers, some probably not so good, but they were there when it counted.
My farther refused to talk about WW2 and his army service, except once he said to me “ many young men were killed, good looking young men, all gone”. I think he had a hard war.
So true, the goal of the WW II draftee was to do the job at hand and make it back to civilian in one piece and of sound mind! The eastern front had the wrost fighting, millions lost on that front!

I was going to read the lyrics aloud to my daughter, and I had to stop after "you never lived to see what you gave to me"--crying. Just like the miniseries, this is beautiful and powerful.

Every year there are two series that I watch at about this time....November. "Band of Brothers" and "The Pacific" I NEVER want to forget the sacrifices that the "Greatest Generation" made for the rest of us still living. My dad, God rest his soul, was a WWII Marine that served in the Island Campaign to defeat Japan. My family's long-gone best friend went ashore with the Army during the Normandy Campaign during WWII and fought all the way to Germany. God rest his soul. Growing up in the late 1950s through the 2000s these were my friends, the Greatest Generation. I learned so much from them. I relished their stories from the war and from the Great Depression. My last friend from that generation passed in 2016. Most of that generation has left us now. I feel so all alone and sad. God bless you and thank you..............

The beauty of this song should not only invoke praise, but a call to be higher and better than we are today. The part of the world that is free is threatened quite deeply by the part of it that is dark, and unless a new generation of heroes arises, songs like this will do nothing more than hail a forgotten memory. Memories of historical heroism are not meant to be nice pretty sentimental recollections we can all dreamily wish the world would return to. No. Those memories are preserved as a call to duty, honor, and country for every civilian that are recollected in history by force rather than by choice only when people of their own free will choose to forget them.

I can't name a single piece of contemporary music that is moving enough to put a tear in a man's eye. But then again, not a lot of contemporary music can be as beautiful as this piece.
No, while i like R&R it has no or little emotion to it and no great vocal voice or mastery is required to succeed in it, given all of the sudio sound engineering and effetcs.
Nothing compares. I firmly believe that Beethovens 9th symphony and Ode To Joy is still the most moving piece ever written in music. I am a young guy and listen to modern music, and My students argue that Pop Smoke, Lil Uzi, drake, Post Malone are the best. I hate to say it, but they don’t even understand.

USSR was a beast. They lost 22 million people, but killed te same. Not only the Germans, but also Poles. Stalin and his government were killing also Russian people. We should thank the heroes, but they are not on the side of the Soviets. If you want to know more about the Soviets read about it what they did in Katyn, Kharkov, Starobilsk etc. Read about the murders on AK (Armia Krajowa) soldiers, who were under the Polish government-in-exile which is the most faithful allies of the U.S., Britain and France. Do not read russian sources, because they are full of pro-Soviet propaganda.
Soviet Union played one of the biggest part, which isn't talked about much due to the Cold War, the West trying not to praise them.
I'm sure the west would be happy to blame Moscow for Chernobyl and the Americans getting the praise if they could for cleaning the waste up.
When it comes to Western politics, British and American especially, i'm very sceptical and cynical about what i believe.

When I watch this show or hear the music I often cry, I wish i were as brave as these men.
Unfortunately for many other companies and squads, the only company that most of us speak of was this one, the only one we really got to see their stories and get a good idea of their state of mind during some engagements, and see interpretations about what happened to them during their tour of duty, and they experienced more than we would ever see in our lifetime in 2 days time or less, and they did that for many years.
I still go back and look at some of the nice tribute videos to the different men of easy company that have passed on now, and also to see other stories from the wars morbid i know but the stories them self are not morbid in anyway they show a love for their fellow soldiers and that they are indeed a band of brothers.

Such a beautiful sentiment. Free of human malignancy and speaks about genuine values which the soldiers of the Commonwealth and the States thought for. Liberty and freedom, only history could taint such a vision.
Young men flying the colours of their country high, glistening with ideals and patriotism they go fight the wars of their country, for other generations to do it all over again.
Will my generation experience total war ? I hope not, but fate is ferocious and violent.

To my dad who fought in Northern Africa and Sicily in WWII who never liked to talk about what he saw or who he killed. Who lived to 93. My son now has his medals from the war and treasures them.
No matter the nationality of the soldier, it be German or Polish, American or Japanese, British or Italian, Russian or Hungarian, Romanian, Greek, French or any other during WWII, every soldier had only one goal in mind. TO serve their country. And no matter the nationality of the soldier, each soldier did his job every well, to defend and serve their country. Each soldiers of each nation did that to the best of his abiliities I think we can all agree.

My father landed on Normandy and fought thru France, Holland, and Belgium into the Ardennes and Battle of the Bulge. He received the Belgian Croix de Guerre. He never talked about the war while I was growing up. When I joined the Navy, he then would talk to me, but not my siblings. This is a beautiful song but I couldn't understand a word she sang. Great voice, though.

Such Pain! My sister's grandson was killed Afghanistan on her birthday! It was a tough time! She grieved severely!

The lyrics really give words to what we felt hearing this track. Its pretty genius, how tension arrives at the mention of sacrifice, how the harmony is resolved when the soldiers live "in our memory" and how triumphant it becomes at mention of unity. Genius

Beautiful song and amazing salute to all those past and present who would hold the line against wrong doing. Just a shame tho that the rest of us squander their sacrifice and gifts by repeating the same stupid over and over, separated only by unsurmountable gulfs of a generation or less and our own hubris and arrogance.
I am totally impressed with this lady. Not only does she sing like an angel and beautiful, she also has a heart like Florence Nightingale. I found out she visited Afghanistan and Iraq numerous times to visit British Soldiers to lift their spirits. If only US soldiers can be so lucky.

Both sides of my family have veterans who have since left us. My father's uncles, my mother's father -- all fought in WW2. My uncles, Steven, Gary, Fritz -- all in Desert Storm. My parents are both "unblooded" ReForGer veterans of the Cold War. I have never had to actively make the sacrifices they all did for the United States -- or the Free World -- I have only played at it as a reenactor of the American Civil War.
I still cannot watch "Band of Brothers" or visit a veterans' memorial like The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, or the Vietnam Wall, without tears threatening and a breath catching in my throat.
Sadly, I am a dying breed.
Too many HATE our soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen. Our own government included.

For my father RN 1940-1954 and his brothers also RN. My father was off shore during d-day, he never talked about his experience except with his friends also veterans. My father died in 1992 from MND. Sgt William Forester RAF KIA 1943.

My Great-Grandfather fought for Germany in the 21st Panzer Division. I agree with you completely, none of these ordinary soldiers wanted to be there, fighting a war they did not want to. They were forced by evil, insane men at the top of the Reichstag.

SuperSheep957 Just to agree with you in principle. Wars are not fought agaoinst individual soldiers but against "Ideologies". Man is never content with what he has but must try to take from others. It is the soldier who must suffer to achieve what his government enforces upon him.
In the final analysis, every world despot in history has risen on the backs of the masses, whether this support be either active or passive matters not! My great surprise is that after every war, the defeated nation's populace does not rise up to hold into account those national leaders responsible for the war failures. WWI (The Great War) is a prime example of the populaces of Great Britain and France giving their war leaders a 'pass' on losing all the lives during the war and in 20 years WW II started as a result of the poor end of WW I. Go figure!

My great-grandfather fought for Germany. He had to go to the Wehrmacht, otherwise he were killed by the Nazis. He lost one of his legs. He died before my birth.
