Having seen Nureyev dance a hundred times in North America, watching Hugo M follow his choreographic steps is a bit eerie for me, since the memory of Nureyev is still so fresh in my mind. They have very different temperaments of course and each brings something uniquely personal to the role of Romeo. Dorothee G is matureing beautifully. I have had the great pleasure of watching her blossom through the years.

So fussy ! Typical Nureyev choreograhy with so many unnecessary steps and foot
moves as well as strange lift (hold) etc.etc. MacMillan is my favorite.
They danced as well as they could and I can't complain in that regards.

It is a matter of personal taste. Both choreographers are brilliant, be assured. You are trying to compare oranges with apples. It doesn't work. Be more open and less finicky.

I love McMillan’s version but Noureev’s balcony pas de deux and wedding night scenes are more raw and passionate IMO. Many Noureev’s creations for Paris Opera do not age well but this one does. It moves me to tears when it is well interpreted. Like in this instance with Dorothée Gilbert and Hugo Marchand who are my favorites in the company.

Funny, I was going to say something about the fussy choreography and looked down at comments to see someone said the same. I don’t love MacMillan’s version, but it flow better than Nureyev’s.
