Unless there’s some exception for overlanding, the Schengen visa allows Americans to remain in the Schengen Zone (largely the EU) for only 90 days in every 180 day period. Is there some exception you can share?
Hi Marty! I'm so glad you mentioned this because after we posted the video I realized the way I phrased that was confusing. When I mentioned the 6 month stay, I was referencing the vehicle only. The Schengen Zone visa will be the situation for us as well. We'll either need to leave or apply for an extension (which we're pretty unlikely to be granted). I should have mentioned this in the video, but we've considered shipping to Europe for 90 days, then leaving and shipping our vehicle to Asia from there then return 180 days later. It's definitely a lot of planning, we're still weighing all of our options. :)
In Croatia now, after burning through 40 days throughout Scandanavia - went by so fast! The Balkans are a great area to explore while expanding or reloading your Schengen time - - but I’m sure you two smarties know this already😉 Love your bold adventurous spirits!
@@chrisandsara There's no need to ship the vehicle to Asia to get around the 180 days of the temporary vehicle import permit in the EU and yourselves for 90 days in the Schengen Zone. Not all of continental Europe is in the EU or the Schengen Zone, so you could travel to Bosnia, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, Turkey and the United Kingdom for example to reset both the vehicle import permit and the Schengen calculators. Dan from Mali Mish and Freely Roaming made a video about how he had his US-registered van in the EU (whilst based in Croatia) for two years and I believe he just took his van into Bosnia for one day and that reset his temporary vehicle import permit for another 180 days when he came back into Croatia later that day. Croatia is an EU Member but not currently in the Schengen zone (they will be in 2024) so at this moment you can use Croatia to start resetting your Schengen calculator.
@@martylovejoy @Marty We'd LOVE to spend a lot of time in the Balkans. Any and all recommendations you may have (specifically Croatia) would be appreciated. :)

As an autistic person with anxiety I can’t even go on a vacation to a nice Airbnb in my home state and enjoy myself. I cannot fathom going on a trip like this and just thinking about doing it makes me anxious. THANK YOU so much for sharing this journey and taking us along with you. I can’t wait to experience this trip that I will never be able to take through your eyes. You guys are doing so much for those of us who have any travel impediment whether it’s mental health, disability, physical health, finances, ability to get a good passport, etc. I am so excited to travel with you guys through the screen. And I know many other people find that same value in your videos. Thank you Chris and Sara! You are making a difference :)
Hi Brianna! Thank you so much for your sweet comment. It brings us a lot of joy to know that our videos are not just fun to watch, but that they're actually helpful and making a difference. We're so happy to know they're helping you figure out ways to make travel work for YOU! We all travel differently and I hope they're serving as a resource for you as you're planning your own adventures. Don't hesitate to reach out if you ever have any questions. We're always happy to help if we can! :)
Wow guys this is incredible, props to all that planning we can only imagine how long that took! Can’t wait to December, hope it all goes well and we’ll be following along!
Currently living in Chattanooga, born and raised in Malaysia. I can’t express how excited I was to hear you’re planning on visiting my home! My wife and I have really enjoyed watching your content.
Thanks, Ken! We keep telling Steph and Pete they should overland with us. It's definitely a great option to bring those cats on their travels with them. 😁
The amount of sorting through information you’re doing is admirable. This won’t be something I’ll do, but I’m excited about coming along vicariously with y’all!
I waited to post a real comment until today because I needed to sort my thoughts. I am in my 60's....with that being said, I tend to lean towards thinking about safety. Sara, do you and Chris feel 100% safe doing this trip as planned? I'm not being overly cautious, I'm just thinking about current world events in those countries. Just ask yourselves the question above. If your answer is YES we feel 100% safe....then that's awesome. If not...if you have to ponder about your safety.....please talk more about your destinations. ❤️. Blessings to y'all.
You are so kind to think of us and of our safety! We totally understand where you are coming from and have definitely put safety as our number one priority! We do feel safe doing this and will be extra careful while we travel!
Wow! First we truly appreciate and acknowledge your countless hours of research. Second what an enormous planning task! I’m a little overwhelmed for you. This will be a trip of a lifetime and we are so excited to follow you on this journey! ~Cara 💖
Thanks so much, y'all! We're excited but also a bit intimidated. 😅 I'm sure we'll run into hiccups big and small along the way, but we're excited nonetheless. :) Hope y'all are doing well and having a great week!
If you go to Australia bear in mind they are incredibly strict on how clean the vehicle has to be, worth watching Grizzlynbear, they have a video about shipping their Land Rover to Australia
Wow, it's like planning a trip to the moom😬 But we totally get the necessity to cover as many bases as possible. This is why we've been following Snow & Curt's around the world trek, all but in a van. And they've got two cats. They're in Peru now. Can't wait to see the build come together. Sending Best Wishes and Blessings, James and Kim ❤
This is the first time we've heard of Snow and Curt, but we're definitely going to look them up! We need all the help and inspiration from those who have gone before us as possible! :) Looking forward to seeing y'all so soon!!!
Traveling with Kramer does seem like a largish problem - but my big question is... Where will you sleep? With your van you could park stealthily pretty much anywhere - but with that big, funny looking pop-up thing - I don't think so. Are there campgrounds everywhere in these countries?
Thanks so much, y'all! If Asia doesn't happen first, we'll make it happen one day! We love it there too much to miss overlanding there in some capacity. :)
Hell yea excited to follow the adventure with you, especially the Pan American & Pan African highways. I watch so many overland videos "after the fact" when they are finished but cool to do this one with you guys in real time!
Thanks so much! We're definitely so excited about Africa and South America, too. It's in the plans to try and drive those, too, but like we said, one country and one continent at a time. :) Thanks so much for watching and following along!
Sound works. OK.... so it sounds like you have, and are doing, a ton of research and learning so much about international overlanding. I truly hope that you have great adventures, and I can not wait to see them. Until next time... Plan safe.... and travel safe.
Thank you so much, Rich!! Definitely lots of research already but still so much to learn. If you ever have any suggestions, please send them our way! You're definitely an experienced overlander and we'd love any advice you can offer. Hope you're enjoying the rest of your summer in CO. :)
I am excited to watch your adventure! 😀 Just a fyi, when my family moved to KL from Europe, our dogs had to stay in quarantine for a few weeks. This might be different if you overland into Malaysia and also may have changed. I also think pets flying into Australia also may need to do quarantine. Apologies if I am wrong! If you are looking for in-country vets who can provide all the right health certificates, my suggestion would be to contact local dog charities that rehome overseas, as we got our dog from Thailand, and the sanctuary had a vet that did all the paperwork. Also, for flying pets - KLM is a great airline - they got our rescue from Thailand to Europe safely😀 Sorry for the long comment - hopefully, some of it is helpful! So excited for you guys.
Thank you so much for this info, Alexandra! Such wonderful advice and insight! We would never have thought about reaching out to one of those charities for advice. And hearing KLM was good for you is incredibly helpful as well. We were trying to stick with a European or American airline since they'll be more pet friendly so we'll try and make KLM work if at all possible! :) Than you again for your help and for warching!

Heya! The trip route looks exciting! Would highly recommend adding Borneo (Sabah and Sarawak) to your itinerary. The rainforest is even much more impressive than the rainforest in Peninsula Malaysia.
Oh so much planning!! 😂 But you guys seem quite well informed! What about delays with the containers? Isn't it super common lately? What happens if you go to india and your car hasn't arrived yet? And don't you wanna start with europe? Seems to be the easiest one and at least you get a taste of how it's like to ship ur car arlund etc.. 🤔 Excited to follow these adventures!! 🥰
Hi guys, not sure how far into your research you’ve gotten but the Australian quarantine costs are pretty high and Kramer will need to be in quarantine for 10 days. I believe the pet quarantine is in Melbourne. Australia and NZ have some reciprocal agreements around bio security so you can potentially take him from one country to the other and skip quarantine in the other country. And it might be cheaper to quarantine him in NZ, stay minimum 90 days then come to Aus.
Hi Ben! Thank you so much for this. We were aware of the quarantine for the dog which is why Australia remains an iffy choice for us. If we go we either want it to be for a long period of time so the quarantine is worthwhile if we're putting Kramer through that, or we might just take shorter trip without him and leave the truck elsewhere. It's really good to know about the New Zealand/Australia bubble though! I had no idea. I'll definitely be looking into all of this more. Both countries are very high on our wishlist, they just take lots of research. :)
Well done on this in depth research video. Take a look at ‘The Road Chose Me’ on UA-cam - Dan has some excellent videos and tips on the logistics of over landing. For flying Kramer, make sure to fly him as ‘excess baggage’ on the same flight you’re on, as opposed to cargo. Flying him as ‘baggage’ will potentially save you thousands of dollars in transport fees. We’ve had good experiences flying our pets with both Lufthansa and KLM.
Hey there! Im so glad you commented because The Road Chose Me has been one of the BEST sources of information anywhere on the internet. I’ve rewatched two of his videos today already. 🙈 I completely forgot to mention his channel in the video, but im going back to add it to this video’s description. And thank you so much for those tips on flying dogs! Super helpful. You’re the second person to recommend KLM now, so we’re going to try our best to fly with them. ☺️
Thanks, Matt! I (Sara) have been on Google Fi for about a year now and it's worked really well. We plan to switch Chris to Fi soon too since it works around the world. That being said, if we ever run into hiccups and there isn't coverage or it seems weak, we can either use an esim card or pickup a sim card from a 711 or a mall abroad. Data is much cheaper in Asia than it is in the USA so picking up a sim card is a pretty efficient option. :)
If it works and you can go south to Goa, you need to KEEP going south to Kerala, which is THE BEST....then you can go up. :) (Sorry sorry be prepared for us to have a lot of opinions if India happens.) 😆
