Very helpful. I also use my old ugly paintings as underpaintings for completely new compositions, letting glimpses of the old work show through. And only I know what went before! This can make for really interesting work.

A helpful lesson, Malcolm. I actually liked the painting and although I understood the problems with the composition, your use of color is so vibrant and lively that you turned a drab photo into a lovely painting!

Shew, yes many paintings discarded😬, but you are right to not just react and scrape off the paint, or chuck it in the bin, rather see what you can do to save your painting, thanks for that tip Malcolm. Nice little painting saved😘

Right, many do pull through even if it is only to decorate the studio window sill 😊

Super video! I have a graveyard of early death paintings. I live in Central Florida where there are masses of pine and other very tall trees. The foliage and tangled growth is nearly impossible (for me) to simplify. This was an excellent lesson on finding composition within walls of green!

The modification is beautiful. The colors bring out a lot of values and the light. Lovely. Which color of yellow did you use for the painting at 7:10 in the video? It looks very soft and gives a nice fresh and light look. Thank you for the video.

Great video. Switching to water mixable oils from water color so there is a chance of fixing. Also taking Robert's composition course, first one other then a water coloring class a the junior College in the 70s. I am use to fixing and changing in my professional occupation and find watercolor really doesn't provide opportunity. That is what make this one a great video to see someone else in a new area showing the thinking of how to approach something that isn't working. Thanks.

Great tip! Another option with watercolor is to go over part of the dry watercolor with gouache. Can be a really fun exercise.

Thanks Malcolm for another great demonstration, I found it quite interesting.
    The result was very inspiring.
If I had a scene, with a fairly overcast type day (no strong contrast), but it had some interesting shapes. Is that something you would still try to get a painting from it? Or would you avoid that kind of scene altogether.

Not something I would usually select. But there are many close value scenes that look great - your colors would be more important. Composition too. Still some sort of anchor shape to dominate so that there is variety in the shapes.

I am appreciate your work ans starting to learn your wonderful technique but I can not understand why the end of the walkway was gone. In my feeling I think it is the most interesting point and why the sky is become not blue. I just try to start so I have many doubts. Hope to get your advise. Thank you very much.

It is far from a perfect result, a salvage of something from a bad start.
