This is so helpful for people wondering how to be there for someone who's grieving or is in the midst of a huge, overwhelming trauma. Listening is a great gift. It really is a legitimate skill that is tangibly worked on.

Thanks for responding, Andi! Somehow, it makes me think of all the times in the past I was not such a great listener to someone in need - but every time I flubbed an interaction, with a friend or a client, I really learned a lot. You may have just given me an idea for another video! ❤️

Daniel!! This video actually pointed out a lot of things to me. Not necessarily flaws in listening, but things that I could definitely work through. I'm the type of person who's brain will pick up and fixate on specific statements or things that people say and then think about what to say next. All of the a sudden, I'm realizing that I'm no longer listening or engaged with the person I'm listening to because I just missed the next few things they were saying while thinking about something they said previously. It's something that I've known I've done for some time and am working really hard to get over and become a better listener. Often people also just need someone to talk to, and being there to listen to them is what they need. Not everything that is being spoken needs a response and in some situations, the silence can mean more then a verbal response.

I know what you mean, and I think everyone can relate to it. It can be challenging to maintain focus and attention sometimes, and it's so easy to blank out or get distracted/hung up on something, then lose the thread of the conversation. Happens to me all the time! I'm actually talking about that in the upcoming video 😀. Stay tuned, and thanks for responding!

I feel like a listener inevitably contextualizes what they hear into their own life. It just seems automatic. I’m a believer that we all hear something different from the same sentence. We either focus on a certain idea or get stuck on a word that was said. Human minds are quite busy with thought and I feel it’s somewhat difficult to turn off thinking, even while someone is talking, even when intently listening.
