its so crazy the differences in the usa to england's audition process. We rock up to the audition day at the university wearing leggings and a loose shirt and trainers, or sometimes a leotard and leggings with jazz shoes and thats what you wear for all three parts of the audition.
I am so happy that I found your channel! I'm auditioning for colleges this year and I'll probably watch all of your theatre related videos 3 times before auditions!
I have my first college audition this Saturday in New York, and I just wanted to say thank you for all of these videos! I’ve been watching them forever and I feel confident no matter what happens. You’re great, girl! And I love ya. I don’t even think I would’ve made it through prescreens. But honestly, thank you so much 💕
+Henrick Perry hey love!! 💕 I have an outfit guide coming up super soon with tons of tips that'll totally work for everyone (including non-binary+fluid members of the TheatreThursdayFam 😊)! So keep an eye out for that! In terms of rep material, I would recommend going with whatever rep sounds the best in your voice + fits the show. Rep material should also fit your casting type (which I realize can be more difficult to determine for people who don't identify as m/f). I think it's up to the individual performer and that they should audition for roles that feel right for them; personally, I would audition for roles that I look and sound like (if that makes sense? I'm kind of rambling at this point lol 😂💕). I'm really glad you brought this up. I have a lot of friends who identify as non-binary, trans, fluid, etc. and I think the industry has some catching up to do in terms of representation + opportunities for performers regardless of gender, etc. It's been on my recently (especially with Pride🙌🏻) and idk. Oops sorry for all the word vomit 😅 here are some helpful links 👇🏻 ua-cam.com/video/Xx2kefqKZxM/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/VtJm0vjsOfo/v-deo.html
Hey Katherine! Just wondering, what do boys usually wear for the dance call? Do they wear jazz pants and jazz shoes? Do they usually wear a bright colored t shirt or a darker colored one? Thank you!!! I love your videos !
Hey Chris-- thank you so much!! :) The guys' wardrobe varies depending on type-- a lot of the "bro"-y or "jock" kind of guys wore basketball shorts. The guys who wanted to show off their biceps or were leading men wore tank tops or really fitted tshirts. Character actor guys wore bright colors/fun, not too distracting pattern.
Can you help me get an idea of what to wear for an audition? I'm a teen (with a baby face lol) and I have light brown hair and green/blue eyes. I like to play the girly but casual characters (I don't know how to explain it) I'm the worst at dressing myself so that's why I'm asking you😂
Unicorn Magic depends on what you, personally feel more comfortable in. I would recommend nice jeans, a blouse, and flats. Personally, (just because of what makes me comfortable) I'd do a dress, denim jacket, and super casual heels
Idk if this will help for college but an ironing hack is to put the thing in the dryer with a wet t-shirt and put it on a short setting.Works like a charm
Katherine! I would loooveee it if you did a nighttime before audition routine or morning routine before audition video! I am auditioning and any tips about what to do one night before a college audition :) love uuuuuu xxxxxxx
Hi Katherine! I have an audition next month for graduate school and part of it includes a group movement excersise first, followed by a short interview, and finally a monoglogue performance. They reccomend applicants wear comfortable clothes in which they can move (and also wearing these clothes throught the remainder of the audition since there's no time to change in between) and I was wondering if a pair of black workout capris, a neutral colored shirt, and tennis shoes would be appropriate?
A quick question about dresses, is it better to go with a nice looking but still casual dress, or something a little dressier? Also, is it better to stick with a modern cut? What ails mean by that is, I wear a lot of retro silhouettes, and they give me a boost of confidence, so I would be tempted to wear something of that nature. Would it be a bad idea to wear a dress of that variety? This was a very informative video, especially with regards to color. I had always been told to wear black of auditions, but it makes sense why you would avoid it!
I would vote dressier rather than casual. Like, a little nicer than what you'd wear on a date/to the theater. If a retro dress works for your type--go for it!!
+Thandi Roe (Thandi'sTV) Hey Thandi 💕 that's awesome! Most of the advice in my audition/ college videos will definitely work for a performing arts audition--so check those out (here's the link ua-cam.com/play/PLQT9aHBtN_y-XuDqpU1Y81EJQYleRHvmw.html). (each performing arts high school audition is different, but follows a pretty similar outline 😊). Here's an audition makeup tutorial ua-cam.com/video/cPwFknj2GRM/v-deo.html
Quick heads up for people watching this from the UK, this is quite different advice, lots and lots of girls wear trousers eg, culottes and a tucked in t-shirt , I didn’t see many at all in dresses last year all though I know some do. Also don’t dress for your type dress for what the college wants eg. Urdang you need to have bold red lips and follow their ‘look’ whereas at Central for example they want no makeup at all. Not hating on this video I’m aware it’s perfect advice for America 💗💗
This has definitely changed....girls wore anything and everything at Juilliard auditions last year! I was VERY young and was the most professionally dressed there.
Hello yes I'm binge watching all of our college audition videos because I have an audition tomorrow. I was told to wear 'comfortable' clothing but I still want to look somewhat dressed up. PLEASE HELP COLLEGE AUDITION QUEEN.
These are very helpful thank you so much for the tip. Can you wear almost an inspired outfit to the character you want to audition for like Belle or Christine for example?
hey! Im auditioning for Heathers next week at a local theater company that im going to be new to! I (obviously) want to either be Veronica or Heather Chandler, probably mostly Chandler. Is it okay to just wear jeans or leggings, or should I wear my only black dress which is school appropriate that has a zipper in the front middle (for detail i guess). Also, if I wear the dress is it ok to wear black converse with it, im comfortable with wearing dresses im just scared it would be too fancy you know? also, theres a separate dance call a few hours after they say to wear appropriate clothes to dance in and character shoes. what would be good to wear? like long black leggings but what top? I'm confused on what's be a good nice option. THANKS :)
+jonathan groffsause hey love! Always better to be slightly over dressed than slightly under. I'd recommend the black dress and casual heels. Wear a leotard (+dance shorts/skirt) etc. to the dance call
It seems like my casting type is playing the quirky but endearing girls. I’m doing theater at my high school next year, I have wavy brown hair that’s rather short, blue grey eyes, a thin build, and skin about your skin tone with freckles. What would you recommend?
Hi Katherine, I’m 13 and I’m doing an audition for a show made by my school for a world tour. There are no ‘roles’ that we know of yet. What would you suggest I wear. Also I’m brown (like Liza Koshy) with dark brown hair and brown eyes and I’m tall and ‘skinny’. Thank you, Jazz
I'm looking for some new power ballad-esque songs to listen to. I'm thinking along the lines of "Fly Fly Away", "Dyin Ain't So Bad" and "Safer". Any suggestions? Or songs you are obsessing over in general?
"How to Return Home" and "Avalanche" by Kerrigan and Lowdermilk!! also anything from ...SAMANTHA BROWN, also by Kerrigan and Lowdermilk. "Remember This" is super underrated (especially Patti Murin's performance) Personally, I've been listening to a lot of SPITFIRE GRILL over the past few days.
This might be too minor of thing to worry about, but do they care if you wear nail polish or not? Obviously nothing too crazy. But is it safer to go without? Is a black skirt and red solid colored top okay? I know you said skirts are sometimes okay, but I'm not sure when it's okay.
+CRN hey! 💖 Nail polish is fine- I'd personally stick to more "traditional" colors. In terms of the skirt, that sounds fine--just make sure that it's not too short 😊
Hey I just wanted to say how thankful I am that you didint just dismiss the fact that BOYS can wear makeup. It pisses me off when people say boys can't wear makeup. Like yes, please normalize it.
for the most part, this is a pretty good guide for auditions in general! However, if the role calls for it, feel free to dress a little more casually. If you're auditioning for a modern show, a nice pair of jeans, heels, and a cool top are totally acceptable.
So the college I'm auditioning at has a weird audition setup. You do one song one monologue and if you want to you can do a dance solo all in the same time and room. So I don't know what to wear that I can also dance in. Help?! 😣😣
This is so odd I'm auditioning for the university of michigan and despite the fact that everyone is saying to wear nice clothes for a college audition, michigan specifically asks for us to wear sweatpants. Idk why...
Ryan Lee my friend who currently attends Michigan was recently talking to me about how physical many of their classes are (not the dance classes--but stuff like clowning, stage combat, movement, etc.) so maybe they want you to have the freedom to move? Idk, but that'd be my guess 😊 (I'd still bring your regular audition outfit too, just incase)

+Gianna1232 I would recommend changing for the dance portion, if that's not an option--leotard, ballet skirt, etc. standard dance attire the whole time 😊
I think you should stick to solids. And for girls, hair should be pulled away from the face. I saw a girl in a floral dress with her hair all over the place--distracting.
its so crazy the differences in the usa to england's audition process. We rock up to the audition day at the university wearing leggings and a loose shirt and trainers, or sometimes a leotard and leggings with jazz shoes and thats what you wear for all three parts of the audition.
+Georgia Dimmick omg that's so interesting!! Yeah, it's a whole crazy ordeal over here haha 😂💕
Georgia Dimmick I was wondering this. I thought in the uk you can dress how you like to auditions. Be good to know more on the uk
I'm 14 and I'm already planning everything for my college auditions and I turn to your videos ALL THE TIME!
+Ella Huestis aah you are so sweet!! 💖💖 thank you!! #TheatreThursdayFam 🎉💕🎭 happy to help!
Ella Huestis haha me too 😅
SAAAAME!
what college did you end up going to?
I am so happy that I found your channel! I'm auditioning for colleges this year and I'll probably watch all of your theatre related videos 3 times before auditions!
You should totally do a college/theater audition q and a! Would love to see that!!
Maybe!! 😊 I answer questions pretty immediately on Twitter and Instagram so I don't know if i would have enough for a vid haha

Katherine Steele 13 the musical: I was thinking maybe Patrice, Charlotte or Kendra

Haha! I'll add that to the list

Hey! I was wondering where you got the Sweeney Todd, Phantom, and Les Mis posters that are framed on your wall.
My mom got them for me as a gift! I think she found them on eBay

I have a white dress with a two inch mint green stripe along the bottom, would that be ok?

Hi :) does this also apply to general musical auditions? Cause I'm not really sure what I should wear! x
for the most part, this is a pretty good guide for auditions in general! However, if the role calls for it, feel free to dress a little more casually. If you're auditioning for a modern show, a nice pair of jeans, heels, and a cool top are totally acceptable.

+LittleTinySteps happy to help!! 🦄💖
:D
I play leading ladies and character roles. What's your advice on clothes for that type?
+Natalie Oswald depends on the specific show/role and your own style/ personality 😊
My college audition asked me to wear black?
shattered beautyx interesting!! I've never heard about that happening before--in that case, follow their rules and wear black 😊
... mine specifies to wear something ‘loose fitting and easy to move in’
Katherine - How do you get your teeth so WHITE?! Do you have a whitening routine?
lol since I'm going to unifieds in Chicago this year, which is four days, is it weird to primarily wear one audition outfit
Not weird at all! Just have a couple of the same shirt/change out of it immediately so it doesn't get sweaty. Haha
Can I wear a black dress? I'm auditioning for the Addams family
So the college I'm auditioning at has a weird audition setup. You do one song one monologue and if you want to you can do a dance solo all in the same time and room. So I don't know what to wear that I can also dance in. Help?! 😣😣

Katherine Steele wow alright that's really interesting... thanks for the reply 😁
I would recommend putting your outfit in a ziplock bag or two so if anything spills your good
Heels? Flats? Sandals?
Up to you! I always do heels
I'm auditioning for Carnegie Mellon next year and Juilliard next year and I'm petrified

💗💗💗
Kathrine: DONT WEAR BLACK
Me: *looks at my only back closet* 0-0
Why should´nt i wear my character shoes during my singing audition?
You can if you really want to, it's just kind of seen as a 'newbie' move 😊
But what´s the problem? what should i use instead? Everyone i met last summer used to say character shoes are the best...and they only used it..
Just wondering, why shouldn't you wear black?
It ends up looking too mature/morbid
Oh, ok. I asked bc I wore a solid black dress for my college auditions and was accepted into every program... but I also look about 14 soo...
+Genna -Leigh gotcha--congrats!
Does anyone know what to wear to a musical theater audition that includes dancing?
+Gianna1232 I would recommend changing for the dance portion, if that's not an option--leotard, ballet skirt, etc. standard dance attire the whole time 😊
Katherine Steele Okay, thank you so much!
Amazing video! I subbed and make videos too!
thanks!!
i thought you were supposed to be in actor neutral, meaning nice neutral clothing without patterns
this channel is bae
I'm so bored and I've been listening to Hamilton, so do a vid discussing Hamilton, or a cover to a song???
