I used to work at a pet store and was ao scared of the jumbo rats. Until, I started playing with the smaller rats. That kind of helped my fears but turns out, it was the dwarf hamsters that were the real monsters!! 😂
@@UnicornsPoopRainbowsmy parents made me write an essay on gerbil care at the age of 10 before I got my first ones. I’ve now had gerbils for 10 years straight and they’re extremely spoiled. That’s how parents should get their kids pets in my opinion.
I’m so glad you referred to them as “high maintenance pets” because most people don’t think or know that due to the false facts we’re given about having rats as pets. They’re not easy, but if you’re able to put in the hard work, care, and love then they’re so beyond amazing and loving and literally one of the best pets ever ❤
I can't think of very many pets that are not expensive or come with maintenance. Maybe ants, but I've never had an ant farm. Pets are expensive, especially the vet bills. I feel like people don't think of that part when they get pets. Especially as they age and start having age related health problems.
Right? I initially got rats without knowing exactly how much work they were (though I knew they wouldn't be as easy as cats). My mom's coworker rehomed his rats to me years ago when he was having a baby bc I had watched them + his dog while they went on vacation, and his more timid boy has started coming out more. Loved those boys to pieces, but man did they give me a reality check. They're just as much work as my 2yr old Setter, and doing their cage is a pain in the ass bc it's a quad cn. And yet, when they look at me, I can't help but deal with all the annoying bits. They're seriously just so sweet and so full of personality. So much more work than the pet industry would have you believe, and vet bills can be incredibly draining if you're unlucky and end up with a chronic rat.
Truly ! I think they are great pets for people to teach their (slightly older) children responsibility of pet ownership! That’s what my parents did for me, but they never once said they are “low maintenance” quite the opposite. I think sometimes people misunderstand that the maintenance it’s self is all easy tasks, but it’s the maintaining the easy tasks that make them “high maintenance”. Definitely love that there is more and better info about rat ownership now than when I had them. I had to do hardcore research to find info about keeping rats as pets! Not just as…. Food for a snake or something (I know everyone’s gotta eat, still makes me sad).
@starlinglamb13 idk, I'd say the maintenance is pretty hard.... how am I supposed to properly clean a cage when I have rats crawling all over me? I can't possibly ignore them when they're *that* cute. Truly a difficult task indeed. They have absolutely no boundaries.
@@matheewee lol so true !!! Totally forgot how hard it is to doing anything with those cute lil critters around! Jokes aside, in case this actually helps! I used to put a couple of fun rat snacks in a TP roll or paper towel roll and fold in the ends in and put a couple of their other toys with them and topped it off with an upside down laundry basket. Keeps them in one place, lets them play and get enrichment while you clean, and you can still watch them play and eat with their cute little hands through the laundry basket holes !
I had a rat when I was a teen, made it little sammiches, sewed a little pillow for him, tried to spoil him. But I kept getting colds. Or so I thought. Being allergic to animals as a vet tech seems hard but I get it haha I still eat falafel even tho I’m allergic to them and the next two days will be hell if I don’t take meds
My mom is also allergic to rats. I try not to wear “ratty” clothes when I hang around her, and she never holds them or spends long periods in my bedroom. She says she admires then from afar haha
When I got my male rats the breeder literally had to tell me “don’t worry, they’ll grow into those” because they have the same size acorns even as babies😭😭😭
Just to clarify, when she says litter box trained she is referring to poo- at least in my experience rats will pee absolutely everywhere, it’s just in their nature 😭 hence the cleaning everything every 2-3 days
they do pee everywhere, they also pee on people they like.. every time i visit my girls one of them has pee on their head. people need to stop saying how clean they are, cause they really arent, they're kinda nasty just like every animal. they gross but very adorable

I love your dumbo baby 💕 rats are so high energy and the fact that your are lazy little snuggle bugs shows that they are mentally and emotionally stimulated enough to just relax
Make sure to research if you are actually considering it! They're extremely social animals and so you would need to get at least 2, to make sure they have enough company. I currently have 6, three girls and three (neutered) boys. ^-^
Rats are so misunderstood! My baby cousin had rats growing up. They lived a few hours away, but every time I came to visit, they remembered me. They would get real squeaky and climb to my shoulder and just hang out. There is something so sweet and special about an animal loving you.
Im SO glad I looked up boggling before my girls ever did it. It's so jarring the first time you see it irl and it's YOUR tiny baby. I have a hedgehog, so I also have a unique pet. One of the things that looks weird but is totally normal is something called "Annointing" (not sure if I spelled that right), where they spit on their back, and it's a way to spread their scent on something they like. 🦔
When I was in middle school, my hair was down to my butt. My friends rat climbed around my neck under my hair curtain gently cleaning my ear. Such a sweet boy. I could never be afraid of them after that.
