I suspect either the daughter assumed her "fun" stepdad and mom paid for everything, or her mother plain out told her that they did. I feel for OP. He tried to do the right thing by keeping quiet about his ex's behavior, which in turn kept the daughter from seeing who truly broke up their family.
Well, OP has made the idiot move by concealing his ex-wife's infidelity from his daughter. And I'll tell you, one thing: The daughter's upcoming marriage won't last; after the and her fiance get married, he'll cheat on her, just like her mother cheated on OP, and if/when they have a kid on the way, she'll have to prepare herself to be a single mother.⚠️
Ok the only thing I can think of is your daughter likely had no idea where the money for her car and nice things came from before you offered the pay for the wedding especially if since you didn't end your relationship with her mother on good terms. Her mom more than likely not only took credit for everything you did for her, but also smack talked you the entire time. That's the only possible way she might not be the AH. You definitely aren't the AH but you might have been able to get to the bottom of this issue a long time ago by confronting her rather than having your entire relationship with your only kid blow up
@@ashwin.unlead Yeah, what’s it worth having a conversation with your only child and fixing your relationship? Who would EVER want to do that? YTA in this case. YOU, ashwin. Every decent, good parents wants to keep in good contact with their children. You obviously have no children if that’s the way you feel and it’s really disgusting so like, keep it to yourself.
one thing i don’t get about the comments… it doesn’t matter if she knew who paid for everything or not. she didn’t seem to care about her dad. if she did think the mom /step dad was paying for everything, that is even worse. she only wants to please the ones giving her money then. like the dad said, i don’t wanna buy your love with money. the dad cutting off a gold digging leech was a good move. if she truly ever cared about him she would still reach out even without money involved. (but this is a good example of how spoiled brats become entitled gold diggers). it can be hard for people who truly care for their kids, not to spoil them. but this is what happens 🤷♀️. (ik my grammer sucks but eh i’m lazy)
Dont forget, the dad is the narrator. There are other possibilities. He links almost all of his acts of care to money. For example, he doesnt really mention any other caring memories that indicate he knows his daughter well. He perhaps only wants recognition as a father, more than a sincere relationship with his daughter. Or not. Maybe hes a terrific guy. Im just saying, someone from another perspective here could write an AITA story and make it sound good.
I agree. I heard a story like this but the ending was that he met up with his daughter and they talked and it ended up being the mom feeding the daughter lies her whole childhood about her dad, or something.
It’s long past time for Dad to tell his daughter the real reason why her parents got divorced. She’s an adult now. There’s no longer any reason for keeping it a secret.
Something tells me the mother has been twisting stories to make it not so obvious exactly how much you were providing for her. And she definitely should have been clued in to your moms cheating being what broke the relationship if she hadn't already found out by that point. Assuming this isn't entirely fabricated of course....
I think the OP should have invited OP and her fiancée to lunch first. Based on what he is saying a long overdue discussion about his divorce may be needed, along with whatever proof or documents. I kind of suspect ex and AP made the OP the villain of his own divorce to the daughter
Seems I'm in the minority here, but the OP gives of the vibe that he thinks his daughter's financial well-being is of the highest priority. Every mention of his love for her involves him paying for something she needed. Chances are her mother and stepfather took care of her emotional well-being, likely manipulating his story in the meantime. Although not necessarily with such intentions. If he always considered providing for his family financially as a show of love there is a good chance that is the underlying reason behind the cheating and divorce.

sometimes its not worth it going down that rabit hole!
he seems to be a person who has set no boundaries and is non-confrontational. he realise it mostly later on!
Yeah OP pretty much implied it or he wouldn’t include the lack of gratitude stuff.

I think this is a pre-existing story where the ending is re-written to give a more savage finish.

Fwiw. My stepdaughter asked us both to walk her.
A truly lovely moment, although in some pictures it looks like she's being frogmarched.

Since she wants her stepdaddy to walk her down the aisle, then her stepdaddy should be paying for the wedding
