    • @leeowen4989
      @leeowen4989 Рік тому +26

      @@madkoala2130 Out of date doesn't necesarily mean useless.
      With fewer moving parts and therefore less to go wrong, a revolver is more reliable than a semi-automatic. They can also bring a bit more stopping power because not only do they put more useful energy into the projectile, they can fire larger calibres compared to a semi-automatic of the same physical size. And because there is no magazine to wrap your hand around, the grip conforms better to a natural hand position, making it more comfortable to use.
      The downside is of course the lack of ammunition capactity, the time it takes to reload and the small gap between the cylinder and the barrel that allows some gas to escape, potentially injuring the shooter.

    This is actually a USMC tradition, affectionately known as the Hog's Tooth. When a scout sniper graduates from school he is presented with a single 7.62x51mm cartridge as a symbol of the 'bullet with his name on it'. At this point he is a PIG (professionally instructed gunman), if he kills an enemy sniper in combat and removes the cartridge from the enemy sniper's chamber he is considered to be invincible as he now has the bullet with his name on it in his possession so it can never be fired. He also graduates to a HOG (hunter of gunmen), superstition for sure but ask anyone in the military and those superstitions run deep.

    For anyone who doesn't know, there's actually some (mostly unreliable, but a few letters) evidence that soldiers actually did this in both the first and second world wars and also that a few soldiers carved/penned common German names into their bullets because they thought it would make them more likely to hit.
    It kind of makes sense when you think about it - when surviving standard warfare as an individual is essentially reduced to pure luck rather than skill superstitions will take hold fairly quickly because they give the soldiers a feeling of personal control, even when the reality is that 90% of their unit isn't ever going home and there's basically nothing they could do to make their chances better than anyone elses. Plus, if you get someone who does that surviving for a while/getting more kills other soldiers will start to copy their superstitions.
    (I have no idea if any troops other than British ones did this, but presumably it spread to troops from other countries that they were fighting alongside)

      In some ways it’s quite useful. Generally in a battle, the man who expects death will likely live while the man who wishes to live will receive a quick death. It’s no guarantee, but it is an advantage.
