The Famous Gold Bottom Mine - Climbing Ladders To The Upper Levels (part 3 of 3)

  • In this video, we continue our exploration of the famous Gold Bottom Mine. In this final part of the series, we climb ladders into the upper part of this abandoned gold mine to find huge stopes and colorful mineral veins. The stopes were very unstable, and large rocks had fallen from high up, smashing the support timbers and making the area quite dangerous. We follow a waterline through the stope and into the mountain where we find more ladders, wooden ore chutes, and a possible route to an even higher level. The mine was discovered in the 1880s, and these upper ore bodies were mined before 1900. After 1900, the lower parts of the mine were worked. This three part series is all about the older upper workings. The underground workings of this gold, silver, lead, and copper mine are more than 7500 feet in length. It was still being worked in 1936 when the ore averaged 0.63 ounce of gold, 14.5 ounces of silver, 15.9 percent lead, and 0.6 percent copper per ton.
    We hope you have enjoyed this three part video series of this abandoned mine, and thank you for watching!

    Imagine one day finding someone's signature done by their own hand will be a rare find, and maybe mostly in mines. The art of writing is diminishing as technology takes over.

    • @TomandJulieMineExploring
      @TomandJulieMineExploring  Місяць тому +3

      You can say that again. I had to sign an electronic form at a medical facility, and the machine didn't even give me the option to scribble on the screen. It gave me three different pre made signatures of my name to choose from.
      We have seen some beautiful writing in mines done with headlamp soot and in pencil. I remember a mine that had a lot of samples in it, and the labeling in pencil was so ornately written that it looked like it was done by a calligrapher. Thanks for sharing your observation!😄

    Well, that was a nice explore! Someone asked who decided where to mine. Can't answer that directly but have something to offer. In the copper mines in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, it was said that the Cornish miners could smell copper and just followed their noses. I'm not sure of that but it might explain some of the older workings where a mining engineer probably wasn't involved.

    Seems to me that all that stope work would make the mine real unstable even with the supports. I know the supports sort of give the impression of sufficient support, but all it would take is one good quake and the whole thing would probably collapse.

    I wonder if you guys (and gal) have any info on who directed the miners in their daily efforts. There seems to be no rime or reason to the direction of work. Did the mine owner, a foreman, or individual miner decide the course? Or just everyone chasing the seams? Thanks for all the entertainment.

    • @TomandJulieMineExploring
      @TomandJulieMineExploring  Місяць тому

      Hi Roy. Good question. I don't have any solid information on that subject. I'm sure that the answer varied a lot depending on the mine. I'm guessing that for a bigger mine, there would be assessors and surveyors taking samples regularly and having them assayed to determine if an ore body was paying off. Other times, especially in a small mine, they probably eyed up the vein that looked good and hoped for the best. Thanks for the comment!😄

      Hey Eddie. Yeah, this one goes all over the place. Thanks for watching through the ads. I'm not sure what I heard, but any noises that are not made by us stand out because it's normally dead quiet in these mines. I know those tommyknockers like to pull pranks on people. 😄

    Got to ask, have you ever gotten really lost down a mine?

      Hi Mark. We have never gotten lost in a mine. Briefly turned around? Yes. The worst thing that has happened is that we have gotten separated a couple of times, and we vowed not to do that again. Thanks for the comment!😄
