Gaming on the edge I may add to that? She has a lot of passion behind her words that’s that drew me in and she’s reviewed every RPG that I’ve played and was to play thank you lady pelvic. ( I’m not trying to an as or misogynistic gay man they do exist and they’re the worst I truly admire your perspective)
I will say this: though most people their first time avoid Peco as he is much lower leveled than you are when you get him, he is in fact a very good character... as in he can eat every hit in the game for free and 99% of the time survive. Literally the best hit sponge in the game
If you choose Bunyan as Peco's teacher he becomes a beast, I always use him that way. But Nina is useless in the adulthood arc, her magic is so weak and she doesn't even have healing skills. At least they fixed her in IV
One thing I like about this game is that it didn't have the usual JRPG ending. At the end of this game. instead of saying "Yay! I beat the bad guy!", you're asking yourself "Did I do the right thing?" It's an interesting twist.
Even throughout the game they don't let you know you're the good guy or anything in fact they clearly explain Ryu's powers really are dangerous and it can be used for bad things. It's a gray area the game wasn't trying to gaslight you into thinking what is right or wrong.
You didn't level up Peco?! That little onion is the strongest non transforming character in the game! Apprentice him under Faul at level 1 and watch him grow into a monster! Also give him a Ring of Fire, his main weakness is fire and that ring neutralizes fire damage.
In some ways, I enjoyed BoF IV more than III. I love the eastern influence in the style & music, also love the combo system which made the gameplay a lot better than the other BoF games imo
BoF3 is best, and I always felt Teepo's return was dramatic and shocking, and definitely made me feel betrayed. It also made sense of why we saw his adult form during Ryu's dream in the beginning.. But I wish we would have had MORE Teepo. Even just a quick break before the adult arc to update us on his life. Also.. can't believe you did my man peco like that
The only thing I agree with you here is wishing we had more Teepo. Little cut scenes updating us on his life. Cause i didnt find the reveal all that amazing. Sadly. Also idgaf about Peco.
The only BoF I've ever played, but have never actually beat. I still enjoyed it though, and absolutely love the soundtrack too, definitely fits the feel good vibe as you pointed out. My fav is Country Living, it's just so laid back, chill and happy. Great vid!
Even today, I keep playing BoF series (except 6). Now, just wandering all over map just for fun .Waiting for true rerise of BoF series. Just hope will come true someday.
A remake of BoF 3, 1 and 2 would be amazing. BoF 1 deserves it because it could really glean more out the characters and has the worst GFX of them all. BoF 3 only because it's my favorite.
OMG ! I am so happy to find other people care about this game as much as I do ! This game is my favorite and I replay it yearly since I am 6 years old. And now I am 27 ... yep 21 years of breath of fire 3. It feels like home if I return to this game.
My first great new UA-cam subscription of 2020. I only wish it hadn't taken me so long to find your channel. JRPGs are my favorite genre, and I just love your reviews.
I honestly think this game's biggest problem is that there's a lot of padding when the story is pretty short and simple. The childhood portion feels like it goes on too long only because it's the same scenario of Balio and Sunder chasing you over and over which gets stale by the time you reach Momo's Tower. Everything in Rhapala is also pretty much padding although training Beyd is at least charming, imo. Then in the adult section, everything between the second Angel Tower visit and Dragonier feels padded to hell because almost nothing happens with the story or the characters. I straight up gave up on the game the first time after reaching the teleporter ruins because after dealing with the boat problems and the sushi-making I was tired of the game holding out on me with answers and my interest was waning. Felt really silly after revisiting it and finding out that the game was only a short hour or two away from giving them to me.
Tarks told me about you a ways back and have been loving your content, Ms. Pelvic. The passion is oozing! Congrats on 10K! That's so awesome. Great job on this review btw. I always felt the original BoF I&2 were super bland as well.. When I played BoF 3 I was underwhelmed initially, due to the camera perspective. I need to play it again and stop focusing of that one thing and see this game for what it is. I'm gonna list this video on my favorite videos of the month! Great job. Seriously.
I personally really liked Myria as an antagonist. She wasn't evil, she was just an overprotective mother who really tried her best to keep her children safe. You know, in a genocidal way.
This was one oif the first RPGs I had along with Final fantasy IX. I had no clue what to do in the beginning around when you had to chop wood and stopped playing it. Around when I thought I'd give it another try my lil brother's dad had sold the game. I felt like I missed something great.
Nice review. I agree with you with the 3 party members thing it seems a lot of TBRPGs on the Ps1 took the 3 character route and i'm not a fan of it. But the way BoF4 pulled it off is probably the best way I've ever seen a TBJRPG game do it.
Love this review. I love this series, and I've always thought that it would have been awesome if 3 had used 4s plot idea. You control Ryu for a bit, then switch over to teepo, switching back and forth now and then. It could end at the finale of the child Arc, and then you play as Ryu as an adult but no longer teepo. I think that'd make players want to keep going to find him, and when you do... Again, awesome review! Really love the way you're honest about what you think about a game, and aren't afraid to point out flaws.
That’s awesome you discovered the breath of fire series. I don’t think I noticed the attack animation change. Props to finishing Bof 1&2; I couldn’t do it. You got to enjoy the references. It’s not a perfect game. It’s a bit short and easy IMO but still has very strong qualities. A lot of fun mechanics. The music is really groovy. I believe it was composed by a Japanese woman who recently worked on FF15 and I guess arranged smash brothers ultimate. Love your hair.
One of my favourite games, I loved the mood it set despite the story not being the strongest. Really interesting to hear a take on it from someone who never played it in their childhood without the nostalgia goggles
What is the name of the song you use? The link in the description just brings me to a channel but I can't find the specific song :( It's played in the very beginning and the end of your video.
14:42 Umm in the PlayStation version there IS a bittersweet option to say yes where you stay with Teepo for the rest of eternity. Go check it out if you haven't yet.
@@PelvicGaming My bad. Actually I haven't played this game in like 15 years and now that you say it I remember what I'm talking about happens after you killed Teepo already right? Lol that was driving me crazy for a sec there though.
Was waiting to see this one finally! I knew you liked it from how you were glowing in the video haha I knew you would like it. Love to see people go from BoF 2 to 3 and seeing their reaction
I normally don't like games with a silent protagonist, but despite that, this game is one of my all-time favorites. I still play it on my old ps1 to this day. One of my favorite things about this game is that the main antagonist is not a typical evil villain. She legitimately wants to protect the world, but she does it through oppression, not unlike Injustice Superman.
Fantastic review! Love how this game looks. It has a really nice art style. The music sounds pretty nice too! Definitely gonna have to give it a go! By the way congratulations on passing 10000 subs! Great to see one of my fave UA-camrs getting so much success! Keep up the awesome work! :)
Another great review! Really glad you enjoyed “BoF 3”! It’s one of my personal all-time favorite JRPG’s. And I 100% agree with you about how Teepo should have been handled at the end!
I agree with you, I think the plot element you mentioned should have been established better if we're supposed to understand why the character did what they did. Like, maybe that'd make it less of a "twist", but I'd rather have something built towards instead of a shock value event.
Not sure if you knew this (heck, I didn't know this until recently), but BoF III had cameos from characters from other Capcom games. If you look at your at 3:31, you'll see Sakura from "Street Fighter" in the video.
This is my fav game of all time so forgive me for going overboard with this comment but...You wanna talk Teepo?! I GOTCHU! I GOTCHU ! LEGGO!!! LEGGO!! Okay first of all this is the best Breath of Fire III review I've seen anywhere. You even showed the magma head monster's thickness which is not only a nice touch - BUTT IT WAS ESSENTIAL. Also I've always said this game's OST was my all time favorite, until just recently when I got into the Etrian Odyssey series and if you want to hear a fantastic OST other than BoF III's try listening to EO IV and V. Anyway, back to Teepo...(cont.) Side note: Each BoF game takes place in an alternate dimension from the others. OOPS I'd put a spoiler here by mistake... took it out. The first thing you need to accept about this game's writing is that there is nearly a complete lack of melodrama. There are tons of feelings but no one walks around boo hoo'ing for very long at all. Everything even the most existential of crisis is told in a very straightforward way. Like in my opinion the emotional climax is when you actually meet Rei again. And Rei, who is probably the most kind hearted person in the party, has to face his little brother again after having completely given himself over to hatred and vengeance. Anyway, in that scene where they meet up again Rei suggests that they go back to McNeil village and kill the townspeople for selling them out to Balio and Sunder. Of which Ryu declines, and then Rei tells Ryu that his suggestion was just a joke. But it wasn't a joke. Rei had fallen so far. But it was little brother Ryu who comes back and SAVES Rei from himself just as Rei had saved Ryu from those wolves in the forest. You see, the writing in this game is very subtle. They never have Rei say, 'Thanks for saving me from myself, bro' - You're supposed to just understand that he is grateful to have a reason to stop aimlessly killing people. You have to understand that he hated himself for what he was doing. That's why when Ryu says he doesn't want to slaughter McNeil village, Rei tries to tell him that it was a just a joke. He was ashamed of being the way he was. So why not travel around the world to try and find God? So they handled Teepo's story in a similiar way. They don't just point out what Teepo is feeling or Ryu is thinking. Pelvic, you in particular may be at a disadvantage in understanding the nuance between these brothers since you have a vagina and not a penis in your pelvic area. My cousin was like my brother when I was a kid. But there might be a couple years that would go by where we wouldn't see each other. The next time we met, it was always a little weird because when we were kids we were getting bigger bodies. So a skinny little kid two years ago, might be a big broad shouldered gorilla in the present. So even though you're bros, you end up in a situation where you're sizing each other up almost as if you're wondering whether you're going to ever have to get into a fight. Speech between my cousin and I would be awkward at first at times like those but eventually it would get back to the way we were. My point is, that these two dragons can't help but size each other up, both physically, and ideologically. There entire lives up to that point had shaped their current beliefs. And even though they are bros. they are capable of recognizing the fact that they aren't little kids anymore, and that they are both real threats to one another in a way. Also, to go back the subtle form of storytelling used in BoF III... think back to when kid Nina and kid Ryu escaped from Balio and Sunder. When they returned to Windia they heard rumors of a little kid who had been causing trouble. That was Teepo. That one little reference to Teepo having troubles as a kid is supposed to be your clue on what happened to him in his life leading up to him going to Myria. Really, all of his adventures are left up to your imagination as a player - and I think that this is a genius way of doing it - because Ryu himself doesn't know anything about what Teepo has been going through, so why should we? We shouldn't. And I know as Teepo's mom you have a hard time with that. And I'm sorry about that. But it wasn't exactly easy on Teepo being your son now was it? Personally I imagined that Teepo disappointed himself out there in the world. I think he probably ended up hurting someone after robbing them for example. It might have been anything like that... or not. But whatever it was, he came to fear his true nature so much that he allowed Myria to put him in a cage so that he could pretend to be something that he wasn't: Powerless. Okay now let's talk about why Ryu could not agree to stay with Teepo. Breath of Fire III is overflowing with imagery. In this game's vocabulary Power and Truth are one in the same. Weakness and Lies are one in the same. Therefore, a dragon of infinite power, like Ryu, SIMPLY CANNOT ACCEPT LIES AS REALITY. This is why Myria, herself was never the enemy, she was never the bad guy. The bad guy in BoF III were the forces of doubt and fear that allowed people like Myria and Teepo to accept falsehoods as reality in the first place - that allowed people like Garr to completely give themselves over to a false God. The entire journey of BoF III is a leap of faith meant to dispel the lies and deception that have placed a strangle hold over the world. Technology and faith is how man's power manifests and Momo represents the tech and Garr represents the faith. Myria was literally fucking with mankind on exactly those two things wasn't she? There was another thing I wanted to point out to you. And still... we're just scratching the surface of this game's story. isn't there a lot of similiarity between the very first quest of the game and the very last? Aren't Myria and that Nue basically the exact same monstrosity? They're both mothers who are causing damage to the world around them as they try to protect children of theirs. And what did the game say about those guys who lived in the city beyond hte desert of Death. The game said it seemed like they weren't even alive - spiritually, as opposed to the Nue's children who were actually dead.. Subtle storytelling, Pelvic. Very subtle. And masterful. Watching you talk about this game means you have taken over my heart and now I'm in love with you. Dayum.
Damn, you really know this game!! This game has a personal attachment to me: Way back in 1997, I shovelled so many driveways at $5 a piece to earn the money to buy this game. I wanted it so bad that I walked the Mile and a half in the snow to purchase it. It was MY very first game purchase. From the game cover to the disc label art, I was in love with this game before I even started playing it. Then I played it, and like what has been stated already, the subtleties of this game are what make it. I especially love the enemy skills to be learned. And Rei is my absolute favorite character from any game ever. His design is just awesome.
I want you to know, I read this. And this was awesome. Kind of gave me a deeper appreciation for this game of things I didn't notice. Like the parallel of the Nue and Myria. I appreciate this well thought out response and I'm glad you enjoyed the video! ^_^
The Breath of Fire Series is my favorite RPG series of all time. Teepo makes sense even without flashbacks based entirely on his childhood. Remember back in the village he wanted to kill the Nue and rush to town to get praise from he villagers. THEN he was ALL too eager to rob McNiel’s mansion and give the money to the villagers. He also rushed there to get praise but didn’t find it. Teepo always wanted to be accepted and what do your do when god herself offers you paradise and acceptance? You settle down in Eden. It’s wild how Rei wanted revenge, Ryu wanted family and answers, Teepo wanted acceptance and they all ended up in the same place. I really love this game because its not about one big bad enemy its about every individual’s own journey into who they are and who they wanted to be with a lot of philosophy thrown in. Great review and I’m going to keep watching your videos =)
The real reason there is no passive EXP for members not in your party is because of the master system. Since you can only gain a masters abilities by gaining levels if you have passive exp you may over level before you apprentice and learning the abilities will take much longer. Like Deis who requires 15 levels to master all her abilities. Most people just use Peco for this purpose if you are only going for the abilities. However if you're focusing on stat adjustment then using a primary character at a lower level will have a faster and greater impact in the long run. With all that being said, great video! Can't wait for the BoF4 one.
I have a question about Breath of fire 2 and 3 are you able to free roam or still grind afterwards in Breath of fire 3, and since I didn't beat Breath of fire 2 yet are able to max out every party member to the max level?
This has always been one of my favorite rpgs since I played it for the first time in 98 when I got my first ps1. This game deserves a remake since it has such an amazing story, great gameplay, and good character personalities
This, suikoden 2 and xenogears are probably the best jrpg ever existed alongside the classics DQ and FF. Its good for the soul to see someone as young as you appreciate these old gems. Keep up the good work ❤
Balio and Sunder were such good side characters. Public gaming merchandise? A book maybe? I loved Teepo, I was was on a mission to find him. I was very sad to see his story handled the way they did. He deserved so much better since that’s Ryu’s whole mission
Fun fact on the topic of music, the entire soundtrack was composed by Alph Lyla, a jazz band with ties to Capcom. I think that's where you got the "feel-good" aspect you mentioned: even the battle themes have a kind of jazz kick to them. When it comes to BOF3, JRPG stands for something else.
The soundtrack was composed by Akari Kaida and Yoshino Aoki. Akari said in an interview that she thought a jazz-inspired soundtrack would suit BoF3's visuals, and the rest was history. :)
I liked BoF3 (the jazzy soundtrack was the best!), but I absolutely despised the excessive minigames, lol. The sushi scenario in particular was pretty annoying and plain silly overall, especially as the segment that was finally leading up into going to the outer world. SPOILERS About the Teepo thing, I wholeheartedly agree! He was such a prominent character in the beginning and for him not to show up til the final dungeon and then be treated as mere boss fodder was a waste of a character. Heck, I think pretty much most of the characters in BoF3 were pretty much wasted, TBH.
I played BOF1 about 15 years ago. It was my first rpg and I beat it in about three days. Then, I got the rom and beat it again 5 years later. I just got it again a year ago just to feel nostalgic. I played 2,3 and 4 15 years ago, too but only a little bit each. I just downloaded BOF2 because I only played a few hours into it, before, but this time I have emulator on triple speed so I probably got into 20 hours into the game, but I'm kind of over it. I'm at the point where I need to Google walk throughs every ten minutes :( I can't imagine starting BOF 3, again. I only got a few hours in 15 years ago. All this nostalgia!
I think Teepo was converted because, while he maybe seemed independent, he needed strong leadership (like Rei) and he found it in the goddess. Maybe. Or it could have totally been phoned in
Both are fair game as far as I’m concerned. You pick which one is more convenient for you, depending on what you got on hand (a vita, or a PS1/PS2/PS3).
PSP version improved a couple of the minigames, and corrected some typos in the script. Also noticed a couple chest rewards (and I do mean like 2 or 3) got shifted around when reading the LP. Also, people say there's more instrumentation in the music, but I didn't notice any difference between the two. I'd say go for the PSP version.
I'd say an 8.5 is a perfect score for this game. It's my favorite in the Breath of Fire series by far! Since it came out in 1998, I've finished it about a dozen times - and completed it (getting every spell, best weapons & armor, full Fairy Village Mansion, 'The Fish' rank, etc.) six or seven times. I also agree that the music is top shelf in this game. Only the Castlevania games are better in that aspect. Great review, Ms Pelvic. I love your channel by the way.
I was thinking about replaying it. I actually love fishing mini-games. It annoys me when rpgs don't have them. Which is weird since I've never been fishing before in my life. As far as BOFIV goes, I freaking love the art style, and fishing is even better. ;)
Man, I cannot wait to see your Breath of Fire IV review. I won't go into details as you said you hate being told things which I respect but my goodness, I love that game.
Great and fair review! Breath of Fire 3 is my all time favourite game but that's purely cuz it was the first JRPG I ever played; so BoF3 is to me what FFVII is to most others. I understand your gripe with the 3 party battle system but I will say that BoF4 corrects this issue and it is the best battle system in the entire series in my opinion. I hope you get to review BoF4
T-shirts for merch would be awesome. Although what I'd be super interested in, but I think it's extremely niche, would be a Pelvic Gaming controller. Like a standard controller but with four blocks of color that match the channel logo. I dunno how hard it'd be to find a manufacturer to make controller skins but I'd be into it!
@@PelvicGaming maybe sticker skins for a controller? whoever previously owned my ps4 made the console and controllers look like Goku's uniform, for example.
I'm jumping in the coments section even before watching the full review, just to say that BOFIII is probably my fave in the series. The soundtrack is much, much better!! With a jazzy feel to it! Very charming. And The animations as usual are jaw droping!
I'm glad you finally reviewed BOF3, and personally I love them all except 6, since it really wasn't a BOF game. I mentioned the pudding hair over instagram, and its so true isn't it? Gives Ryu a very cute quality to reflect his gentle nature which is shown in his artwork. Overall I see your valid points, but I played this as a kid when it first came out, and everything was perfect, so I didn't find or see any faults with this game. Remember, its not a newer RPG so you have to forgive BOF3 for not having some of the quality improvements made to JRPGs since then. While keeping your points in mind, you will enjoy BOF4, as it improves in literally every way, and I still believe Dragon Quarter improves on the formula even more.
@@PelvicGaming also, what did you think of the ending sequence sprite work, and the ending theme of Breath of Fire 3, "Pure Again"? I love that theme, and its my second favorite in the series next to "Castle • Imitation" 😍😍😍👌🏻
Yaaay you did it! Glad you enjoyed it more than the others! The ONLY thing I want to say about BOFIV is that the developers planned on making it longer, but ran out of time/budget. That's useful to know going in and spoils nothing; the whole game still feels complete and rock solid. Grats on 10k!
Thanks for being considerate enough to break off before spoilers - it is much appreciated! If you did merch, I'd like something simple, like a tanktop with the logo. I could see myself wearing that. It's a shame trademarks would make it difficult to sell a compilation album of your favorite songs from games. I have to say, that is one of my favorite parts of your reviews - the consideration and showcasing you give to frame the importance of OSTs in the games you play. Cheers, and Happy Holidays!
Peco is one of the strongest characters in the entire game. Build him into a tank, his counter attack rate is outrageous. Oh well, not watching the rest of this lol
@@PelvicGaming I kept Ryu at lvl 1 until he could be an apprentice of Mygas. Used him as a mage, Peco as tank, and Rei as DPS. It's such a strong build
@@PelvicGaming he really is an underrated character. I understand your disdain for the way he was written, etc. but he really is ridiculously tanky if you use him. Highest HP pool in the game and his defense is pretty ridiculous too. Peco under Fahl is stupid. Alternatively, having a character at lvl 1 makes for a great skill dummy if you want certain masters' skills.
Really glad you liked this game! Discovered your channel after looking up a 'Breath of Fire' review to see if it frustrated the hell out of anyone else! Agreed with every point you made and left a REEEEEEEALLY long comment on it, as I needed to vent! Moved on to BOF II after quitting on BOF despite being right at the end. I prefer II to I, but III is always gonna be the one for me. I think I'd go as far to say that III is one of my all time favourites, and the first game is one of my least! Can't think of a single other game I've played that has required me to look up a guide as much as the original BOF. I would have enjoyed it a lot more if it weren't for that... Subscribed as I think you've hit the nail on the head with all your BOF reviews!
Amazing review!!! I'm watching right now and did not finished yet, but!! Such an intense ride!! You sure are quircky and dynamic!! And I stop to say that the music in this game is not just cool!! But amazing!! The drum work, the funky ritms!! I think is my second fave rpg soundrack on the psx era!! (The first one being Saga Frontier 2!! Did you play that??!! The musical score there are brilliant, an work of art an finesse with piano and percussion!! Also an outstanding use of light motifs throughout the journey!!) Music sure does play an important role in role playing game (XD) And for me, may be the X factor that will determine if I will still go in the ride!!! Also the art style and handmade art of the game is a bliss to the eyes!! Guarantee imersion!!
One of my favorite Mechanics in this and 4 is the ability to learn abilities and spells by watching enemies use it. This was back when Capcom gave a shit. 'Myria indoctrinated Teepo.' HOLY SHIT MYRIA IS A REAPER! I can't honestly say which I prefer between 3 and 4, they are both of pretty excellent quality.
@@PelvicGaming While most people like 3 more, in terms of overall quality 3 and 4 are very close. 4 also has some interesting aesthetic and art style choices.
Thank you very much for reviewing this game! You had many great points. I loved how you noticed the callbacks. (Which is why its great to play the games in conjunction with one another.) Can't wait to see your Breath Of Fire IV review next year! As far as which is better, 3 or 4, honestly 4 has better gameplay but the 3rd is so nostalgic for me. So i guess, ill have to with 3. Thanks again!
Ayy one of my favourite games ever. Agreed on all fronts..most of the problems with the game now do fall within Quality of Life territory. Also, no mention of the Skill / Skill Ink system? Did you like it, or find it equally tedious as the other chore-y isolated-menu stuff?
Jack Witty The only annoyin thing i found was the amount lvls system, i mean, for example, taking a character lvl 1: Mygas: Frost 1 lvl (char lvl 2), Meditation 4 lvl (char lvl 5), magic ball lvl 6 (char lvl 7), typhoon lvl 8 (char lvl). kinda annoyin the system doesnt count the current level.. but well i think is logic xd Im playing with the master setup build by dksu.
Teepo appearing in 4 was just an easter egg according to the creators was never meant to be part of the story from what ive read but thats so hard to pick 3 was awesome but ugh the story in 4 is fantastic and when you play you will fall in love with the cast of characters. Plus man that battle system was the best in the series and the ost was top tier hands down my favorite one
BoF III SPOILERS AHEAD: The weird thing about Teepo is how his adult self visits child Ryu in a dream sequence at the beginning of the game, trying to convince Ryu that they're not like the others, or something. And even CHILD Teepo actually somehow mysteriously knows Ryu's name from the beginning. There's a scene where he momentarily realizes how odd that is, but then gets distracted by Rei fleeing the weapon shop he was stealing from. I never caught the significance of these details on my first playthrough, but now I suspect Teepo was always in touch with his higher future self from the get-go, to some extent...but that part of him was taking a back seat most of the time, initially. -- Also, Rei clearly never knew Ryu & Teepo were dragons in the beginning, but I think Teepo unconsciously knew it, and his spirit was somehow trying to communicate that to Ryu, too, all along. There was one early scene where Teepo was noting how Rei had found him naked in the woods in the very same way as Ryu-but maybe I'm overthinking it. -- Later on, I dunno the degree to which Teepo was mind controlled, had Stockholm syndrome, or if he really had somehow rationally come to his conclusions on his own... Or maybe he fell in love/got enchanted, or something, like Siefer in FFVIII. -- But I've never even had the first clue what happened to Teepo in the interim between the times you see him. It seems they left it intentionally open-ended. But it did bother me that they made him so likeable, only to relegate him to such side-character status. Maybe that was intentionally sadistic on the creators' part. lol I'm gonna have to make my own video review of this game someday.
To be honest, after meeting Teepo again and experiencing that part of the game I just wanted to kick the crap out of the final boss. Looking back, I think they put that in there to motivate the player emotionally to invest in "the cause".
I think the story is brilliant, it's lots of little occurrences or events that lead to further consequences and ever more dire scenarios but never strays into the "Gotta save the world cliche" of many RPG's. Call it a slice of life kinda story dealing more with the characters interactions in the world as events unfold. *Breath of Fire III > Breath of Fire V: Dragon Quarter > Breath of Fire II (Ryusui translation Patched) > Breath of Fire > Breath of Fire IV* I don't hate BoF4, it's just my least favorite of the series because for me, it's the one game in the series that goes way too overboard with story blockading mini-games.
I stopped before the spoilers, but if you're planning to review Breath of Fire IV, I'll very much be looking forward to that video. Most people seem to favour BOFIII, but the fourth game will always have a special place in my heart.
I never liked when games forced the main character upon you and locked it. Sure it makes sense story wise but it backfires if I don't like the locked character.
Breath of fire IV was very ahead of his time in the combat system. Basically you have all 6 characters in each battle, three in the active fight and three in the back, and you can swap them whenever you want. Not only that, you can combine elemental attacks to form new ones so you will be changing characters on the go depending on your strategy. It's really smart. I always thought FFX copied this later. Story is not as good as III, but overall is a better game in my opinion
Huh. Just came across this channel, and I guess I'm staying! I played BoF III last year and wrote a few things about it, too! I wholeheartedly agree with this review! The fishing theme is lovely, but my personal favourite track in the game is "Technology". :) Subscribed, looking forward to your content. :)

I will say this: though most people their first time avoid Peco as he is much lower leveled than you are when you get him, he is in fact a very good character... as in he can eat every hit in the game for free and 99% of the time survive. Literally the best hit sponge in the game
Mitsuru Hype yes and he's a better garr
Not to mention his counter rate
Not only is he a tanky boi.
*He's also a counter Boi!*
If you choose Bunyan as Peco's teacher he becomes a beast, I always use him that way. But Nina is useless in the adulthood arc, her magic is so weak and she doesn't even have healing skills. At least they fixed her in IV
Plus reneration.
One thing I like about this game is that it didn't have the usual JRPG ending. At the end of this game. instead of saying "Yay! I beat the bad guy!", you're asking yourself "Did I do the right thing?"
It's an interesting twist.
I couldnt agree more!
BoF3 >> BoF4!! Love BOF3, one of my favorite RPGs ever. Great OSTs (love all of the boss themes)
It is am amazing sound track thats for sure!.
I agree. BoF 4 is an amazing game but I liked BoF 3 better.
I like Breath of Fire 2 the most.
Best one
In some ways, I enjoyed BoF IV more than III. I love the eastern influence in the style & music, also love the combo system which made the gameplay a lot better than the other BoF games imo
I remember ordering that game when I was 18 I loved it so much. I'll wait for the review this time lol
Personally, I enjoyed the dragon gene splicing more than the combo system.
Great vid!
I bet you got lost in the desert
@@CamiloMoreira like everybody 😂
"it's just so laid back, chill and happy." until you reach one of the most frustrating desert in game history.
Is this the same version pn the psp?? The reason i ask on the psn store it doesn't say ps1 classic. Anyone know?????
Even today, I keep playing BoF series (except 6). Now, just wandering all over map just for fun .Waiting for true rerise of BoF series. Just hope will come true someday.
The fans are thirsty for a true BOF game. And frankly I dont blame them.
A remake of BoF 3, 1 and 2 would be amazing. BoF 1 deserves it because it could really glean more out the characters and has the worst GFX of them all. BoF 3 only because it's my favorite.
Your passion and excitement is contagious! I appreciate your awesome reviews, keep up the great work!
Thanks! Thats something I aim for! Appreciate cha watchin'!
@@PelvicGaming As far as hypothetical swag is concerned, I think t-shirts are always good, but I am partial to coffee cups and koozies!
Thank you so much! It truly means a lot. I hope you enjoy what else I have to offer. :-)
Beat it twice in the late 90's ...this review make me want to go back Play it again !
Yaas!! Thank you!
Great job. Seriously.
Tarks out here pushing my content I swear.
I personally really liked Myria as an antagonist. She wasn't evil, she was just an overprotective mother who really tried her best to keep her children safe. You know, in a genocidal way.
I 100% agree
This was one oif the first RPGs I had along with Final fantasy IX. I had no clue what to do in the beginning around when you had to chop wood and stopped playing it. Around when I thought I'd give it another try my lil brother's dad had sold the game. I felt like I missed something great.
Emulator fam
Ugh, I feel your pain. Something similar happened to me, but with Unlimited SaGa and my brother.
I have to finish this game. I have played all the BOF but have to finish this one. BOF IV is still my fav!
I can't wait to play 4!!
Pelvic Gaming Hmmm no spoilers but have tissues near lol
OH MAN IF THEY DID THAT ID WOULD HAVE FUCKING LOVED THAT.
Just want to say peco is actually pretty good and even gets a permanent hp regen which iiirc increases as his hp does.
I'm a huge fan of Breath of Fire 3, but 2 and 4 have special places in my heart. And I'm kinda hype to hear your thoughts on 4.
Same mutual feeling, here!
I am so hype to play four! Soon...soon~~
Hey does anyone know what the song is called at 12:00
Never mind, i found it, and it’s overcast by the channel in the description
2:45 "Where I got my jollies"
Pelvic is precious.
Hehe ♡♡
One of my favourite games, I loved the mood it set despite the story not being the strongest. Really interesting to hear a take on it from someone who never played it in their childhood without the nostalgia goggles
The game is older than me and I still play all the series in an emulator 🔥
Congrats on 10k subs and merry Christmas.
Thank you! Merry Christmas!!
What is the name of the song you use? The link in the description just brings me to a channel but I can't find the specific song :( It's played in the very beginning and the end of your video.
wallykingblade I’ve been looking for it too :(
I found it, and it’s called overcast and it’s from the channel in the description
14:42 Umm in the PlayStation version there IS a bittersweet option to say yes where you stay with Teepo for the rest of eternity. Go check it out if you haven't yet.
I have. I think you misunderstand- I wanted TEEPO to ask. I wanted a scene with him AND Teepo to be together. All you see is Ryu alone.
@@PelvicGaming My bad. Actually I haven't played this game in like 15 years and now that you say it I remember what I'm talking about happens after you killed Teepo already right? Lol that was driving me crazy for a sec there though.
It's all good. Honestly, you made me doubt for a moment. Cause I was sure there wasnt a Teepo ending. Haha, in any case thank you for watching. :)
Was waiting to see this one finally! I knew you liked it from how you were glowing in the video haha I knew you would like it. Love to see people go from BoF 2 to 3 and seeing their reaction
Haha I'm glad I didn't disappoint. This was a major upgrade from Breath of Fire 2 for sure!
Try play Dark Cloud 1 and 2 😀
Fantastic review! Love how this game looks. It has a really nice art style. The music sounds pretty nice too! Definitely gonna have to give it a go! By the way congratulations on passing 10000 subs! Great to see one of my fave UA-camrs getting so much success! Keep up the awesome work! :)
Thank you thank you!! Please do, it's amazing.
Aaaah! Love that you released it early and how you allotted time to talk about spoilers!
Glad you approve!
Enemies be lookin THIIIIICK, that was a great laugh.
Oh and you can also learn enemy skill with the examine command in this entry
Another great review! Really glad you enjoyed “BoF 3”! It’s one of my personal all-time favorite JRPG’s. And I 100% agree with you about how Teepo should have been handled at the end!
Hey! Thank you for watching! This is absolutely my favorite Breath of Fire this far!
I did!
I really like your style of review. It’s very in-depth and methodical. I look forward to watching more of your content. ^_^
Thank you so much!!! I appreciate it!
Anyway, back to Teepo...(cont.)
Side note: Each BoF game takes place in an alternate dimension from the others.
Well said my dude
I want you to know, I read this. And this was awesome. Kind of gave me a deeper appreciation for this game of things I didn't notice. Like the parallel of the Nue and Myria. I appreciate this well thought out response and I'm glad you enjoyed the video! ^_^
Loved the review. I would like to see a calendar for gaming merchandise. Did you ever come up or decide on any?
Congrats on 10k!!!
Thank you!!
This is my favorite rpg on ps1 for sure. Thanks for the fair review!
Yeah thinking about it later it does make sense but it still annoys me.
9:29- Just like Final Fantasy I through VI.
10:15- I didn't know that.
I have a question about Breath of fire 2 and 3 are you able to free roam or still grind afterwards in Breath of fire 3, and since I didn't beat Breath of fire 2 yet are able to max out every party member to the max level?
Yeah you can grind
BoF3 is the zenith of the series, you're a lady of culture, taste, and class for recognizing.
Thank you! ♡
This has always been one of my favorite rpgs since I played it for the first time in 98 when I got my first ps1.
This game deserves a remake since it has such an amazing story, great gameplay, and good character personalities
I'm just playing now BOF 3 & 4, great old school RPG!!
This, suikoden 2 and xenogears are probably the best jrpg ever existed alongside the classics DQ and FF.
Its good for the soul to see someone as young as you appreciate these old gems.
Keep up the good work ❤
Great review! This channel is quickly becoming a vault of RPGs i want to play in the future. Already rating Suikoden, bit i wish i had more time.
Balio and Sunder were such good side characters.
Public gaming merchandise? A book maybe?
I loved Teepo, I was was on a mission to find him. I was very sad to see his story handled the way they did. He deserved so much better since that’s Ryu’s whole mission
My god, your channel is amazing. Two hours and i can't stop watching. Very good and intelligent analysis. Congratulations from a brazilian fan!
Wow! Thank you so much! ♡ I appreciate the kind words!
SPOILERS
About the Teepo thing, I wholeheartedly agree! He was such a prominent character in the beginning and for him not to show up til the final dungeon and then be treated as mere boss fodder was a waste of a character. Heck, I think pretty much most of the characters in BoF3 were pretty much wasted, TBH.
Very crisply edited... Which app do you use to edit the videos?
Thanks. Premiere Pro.
I'm at the point where I need to Google walk throughs every ten minutes :(
I can't imagine starting BOF 3, again. I only got a few hours in 15 years ago.
All this nostalgia!
I love bof3 and 4 but 4 is still my fav. This review makes me want to draw fanart! Great job and grats on 10k!
I can't wait to play 4!!
Also....I likey fan art...>w>
I think Teepo was converted because, while he maybe seemed independent, he needed strong leadership (like Rei) and he found it in the goddess. Maybe. Or it could have totally been phoned in
Which version would u recommend, the original ps1or the re-release PSP?
Both are fair game as far as I’m concerned. You pick which one is more convenient for you, depending on what you got on hand (a vita, or a PS1/PS2/PS3).
@@Mageman17 ty, but that doesn't help very much.
Fantastic review as always, Pelvic!
Anyone know the name of the song at 4:51 ?
Nvm yall already found it. It's 'Still a Chrysalis'
:)
Thank you, I appreciate that.
Also I cannot wait to play 4 either!! Ive only heard great things!
Longest video in 11 months. NEW RECORD!
Oo man. Controllers I think would be a bit pricey. But noted for the future. ;)
@@PelvicGaming maybe sticker skins for a controller? whoever previously owned my ps4 made the console and controllers look like Goku's uniform, for example.
Has anyone overleveled for balio and thunder 1st fight? To actually beat them?
Lol not i
@@PelvicGaming apparently you keep teepo and miss out Nina...being a massive change to the game, never tested it myself though
@@UmaJaba1 Yeah, that's a myth.
I understand it's an older game so some may say I was being a bit gruff but still.
I look forward to playing four. Probably gonna pass on 5. Meh.
Why is that useful to know going in?
Wow the love for Peco is strong lol
I cannot hear "Even the Sun's Happy" (fishing minigame song) without the "GET READY" voice!
I don't know how you bang out these reviews. It takes me forever to play these jrpgs
No social life no sleep squad!
One of my favorite Mechanics in this and 4 is the ability to learn abilities and spells by watching enemies use it.
This was back when Capcom gave a shit.
'Myria indoctrinated Teepo.'
HOLY SHIT MYRIA IS A REAPER!
I can't honestly say which I prefer between 3 and 4, they are both of pretty excellent quality.
I can't wait to play it!!
Most people say 3 is there fav but we will see where I stand~
@@PelvicGaming While most people like 3 more, in terms of overall quality 3 and 4 are very close.
4 also has some interesting aesthetic and art style choices.
Oh, my childhood! 100 hours spent fishing, easy.
Thank you so much for watching. The call backs and dragon splicing is my favorite thing.
I can't wait to play bof4!
Put Peco with fahl immediately. You're welcome.
Ayy one of my favourite games ever. Agreed on all fronts..most of the problems with the game now do fall within Quality of Life territory. Also, no mention of the Skill / Skill Ink system? Did you like it, or find it equally tedious as the other chore-y isolated-menu stuff?
I never messed with them.
@@PelvicGaming Only like 15 skills are needed but they are amazing. Monopolize is the best skill.
Jack Witty The only annoyin thing i found was the amount lvls system, i mean, for example, taking a character lvl 1:
Mygas: Frost 1 lvl (char lvl 2), Meditation 4 lvl (char lvl 5), magic ball lvl 6 (char lvl 7), typhoon lvl 8 (char lvl). kinda annoyin the system doesnt count the current level.. but well i think is logic xd
Im playing with the master setup build by dksu.
BoF III SPOILERS AHEAD:
The weird thing about Teepo is how his adult self visits child Ryu in a dream sequence at the beginning of the game, trying to convince Ryu that they're not like the others, or something.
--
Also, Rei clearly never knew Ryu & Teepo were dragons in the beginning, but I think Teepo unconsciously knew it, and his spirit was somehow trying to communicate that to Ryu, too, all along.
There was one early scene where Teepo was noting how Rei had found him naked in the woods in the very same way as Ryu-but maybe I'm overthinking it.
--
Later on, I dunno the degree to which Teepo was mind controlled, had Stockholm syndrome, or if he really had somehow rationally come to his conclusions on his own... Or maybe he fell in love/got enchanted, or something, like Siefer in FFVIII.
--
But I've never even had the first clue what happened to Teepo in the interim between the times you see him. It seems they left it intentionally open-ended.
But it did bother me that they made him so likeable, only to relegate him to such side-character status. Maybe that was intentionally sadistic on the creators' part. lol
I'm gonna have to make my own video review of this game someday.
I'm glad UA-cam recommended me this chanel.
♡♡♡
I never liked when games forced the main character upon you and locked it. Sure it makes sense story wise but it backfires if I don't like the locked character.
Breath of fire IV was very ahead of his time in the combat system. Basically you have all 6 characters in each battle, three in the active fight and three in the back, and you can swap them whenever you want. Not only that, you can combine elemental attacks to form new ones so you will be changing characters on the go depending on your strategy. It's really smart. I always thought FFX copied this later.
Story is not as good as III, but overall is a better game in my opinion
You're great with these reviews. Not many female gamers can convey their enthusiasm through knowledge and experience with the medium.
I definitely agree with the take on teepo. The build up was lackluster af
i really need to go through your entire video list
Breath of Fire III is awesome
Huh. Just came across this channel, and I guess I'm staying! I played BoF III last year and wrote a few things about it, too! I wholeheartedly agree with this review!
The fishing theme is lovely, but my personal favourite track in the game is "Technology". :)
Subscribed, looking forward to your content. :)
Thank you so much for watching! Technology is a good theme so I can't blame you. :-) hope you enjoy the future content!
