  • At 350km/h, China currently has the fastest operating train service on earth. Second place is a tie between the planet's other technology giants - Japan, Germany, France, and Morocco. Wait. Morocco? I went to Casablanca to find out more...

    Morocco: We're going to build 360km of high speed rail, linking our three main cities for €2bln. We're not a rich country, so we planned it meticulously to minimise costs by using existing technology, and worked hard and frugally to deliver a difficult project through harsh terrain on a bare bones budget.
    Britain: We're going to make a promo video and some draft reports for £2bln, discussing what our non-existent high speed train might look like if we could build it, which we may or may not be able to do, in the fullness of time. We are a rich country, but we pis*ed it all away on a non-existent bridge accross the Thames, non-existent ferries, a non-existent railways, and an actually existing cable car between two non-existent "attractions". Choo choo.

    • @stephanweinberger
      @stephanweinberger 4 роки тому +159

      And actually 2 billion € is pretty cheap for that distance.
      Here in Austria they are currently planning on upgrading the southern mainline from Vienna to Mödling (some 10km) to 4 tracks (and that only for up to 200kph) - for about the same price! Granted, this is in densely populated area with buildings right next to the existing 2-track line, but still: 2 billion for 360km of high speed rail is a bargain.

    • @AlMoxtar
      @AlMoxtar 4 роки тому +101

      @@stephanweinberger In densely populated areas, legal costs go exponential. Not only the price of land is higher and there are more owners to contend with, the amount of services to deviate (water, electricity, roads, cables) go up as well. And in a first world country where citizens can count on the judicial system.. construction is inevitably delayed and costs inflated. Even in Morocco where contesting land expropriation for such a project is useless, legal problems delayed the construction for at least a year and cost 14% more for what I read.

      @Ali G Well, obviously it did in this case, given that road accidents decreased as a result, resulting in fewer financial and population losses for the economy. Not to mention new commercial developments at the stations and along the line, and reduced travel times between cities for business travelers (they are not far enough apart for planes to even have a temporal advantage at these speeds, when considering airport access and security times). I wonder why you hate high-speed rail so much that you'd make such a claim when the facts are right there.

    • @SilverScroll
      @SilverScroll 4 роки тому +22

      @Ali G You do realize that railfreight is _by far_ the most efficient method of moving freight over land - it is why the USA, despite operating rail having been made as difficult as possible by regulation prompted by powerful car and oil lobbies, _still_ has the worlds largest and _vastly_ profitable railfreight network.
      Yes, a highway network is good to have, but railways are the nonplusultra.

      @@freewal Let's be honest here. Even though this is the fastest train in Africa and a proof of development, Morocco, as for every developping country, presents very clear internal inequalities. The coast is clearly wealthier than the inner country, as expected. Developping railway infrastructures will certainly help the moroccan economy, encouraging the implementation of industry in the inner country, raising the wages in the mostly poorer regions.
      Railway could also help "moroccanize" Western Sahara and probably end the dispute from a demographic standpoint. Indeed, implanting a sense of belonging in the local populations would compensate with the Algerian influence in the region. Algeria intends to spark conflict in the region to, in the long term, annex the region and gain access to the Atlantic Ocean. Railway infrastructure may well be the solution to the old Moroccan - Algerian rivalry.
      Morocco could vastly benefit from the railway structure. Judging by the Moroccan populations in Europe, which are throughout the Old Continent sensed as "out of place" culturally and ethnically, a massive reverse brain drain could very well be started by the development of Moroccan economy.

      @JasperJanssen 4 роки тому

      Amazigh Blue Azul - Anti Mafia - Anti ANPD those being the TGV and ICE respectively, yeah. I mean, even the Pendolino has a track record. But no, we had to go with a *different* Italian train from a manufacturer who has never made a high speed train before and said they could do it super cheap by just taking their existing medium speed design and making them ride faster.
      I’d guess that the existing high speed rail manufacturers got a massive boost from that whole fiasco.
      Edit: whoops, excuse me, the Pendolino has been bought up by Alsthom, and they also wanted to buy Siemens. Thank god the EU did not allow that merger, or we’d have had a true monopolist.

    Journalist Professionalism? I living in the States and I didn’t think such a thing existed... I’m feeling greatly confused, can those words go together, how odd.

      @@ThoVoBeatz Here is a quote from NYT editor, while he was addressing his fellow 'journalists'
      "There is no such thing as a free press. You know it and I know it. There is not one of you who would dare to write his honest opinions. The business of the journalist is to destroy truth, to lie outright, to pervert, to vilify, to fawn at the feet of Mammon, and to sell himself, his country, and his race, for his daily bread. We are tools and vassals of rich men behind the scenes. We are jumping jacks; they pull the strings, we dance; our talents, our possibilities, and our lives are the property of these men. We are intellectual prostitutes." - John Swinton, Chief editorial writer of the New York Times

      @IngLouisSchreurs Pity you don't have the intellectual fortitude to conquer rudimentary grammar.
      Nevertheless, your comment does at least demonstrate that the mother of stupid is always pregnant.

    Nice 'Wish you were here' music at the end. Always thought you had a bit of a Judith Chalmers vibe about you.
