- Liberal Democrats leader Sir Ed Davey joins Sky News to discuss the Post Office Horizon scandal, and criticism launched at himself by Alan Bates at the Post Office inquiry.
Sir Ed was the Postal Affairs minister between May 2010 and February 2012, when the scandal was emerging.
He reiterates that he has apologised to Mr Bates for his role, but claims again he was "lied to" by the Post Office.

Only sorry he got caught out.
Why did he blank James Arbuthnot and ignore the correspondence? He was told the convictions were unsafe and decided to believe the PO anyway.
In other words he chose to back the PO's version of the story, disbelieve that of his constituents or look after the people he is elected to serve.
Not impressed. A poor MP, a poor leader, and a poor minister.
The problem was not Ed Davey believing the lies but that he did not bother to investigate them when receiving pleas to do so from the SPMs. Who told him the lies or when he is a witness will it be i don't t recall
So what was the purpose of having a “post office minister” if the post office was run “at arms length”? What exactly was that role for?
Exactly ! The gits were really just ticking the box. They never ever expected to be challenged .
Such arrogance!!
Will he apologize for enabling austerity ?
That was Alistair Darlin's plan inherited by Cameron
Clearly unsuitable for public office.
Davey is appearing before the inquiry. For the sake of his poll numbers, he better not have forgetfulness and refuse to answer the questions
Really don’t buy this - Davey far too easily duped by the PO
Who would vote liberal after this sham
The most absolute waffle imaginable. Not a flicker of regret.
5 months to meet Mr Bates
.. then nothing done or any enquiry.. despite all the similar cases.. just asking the PO without any external or independent investigations... what was he doing then?
Davey an absolute weasel and he knows it
There is a fundamental problem with Sir Ed Davy's response here. He doesn't actually sound sorry for anything or anyone and clearly resents the idea that he should say sorry at all
Inept and incompetent, he did nothing to help the poor subpostmasters.
Plenty more lies to see through…..
He suggested it was only Mr Bates. Is that the only Mr Bates who was was acting on behalf of the dozens and dozens of SPM's.
Only occured to him he was lied to AFTER the docudrama, despite literally no new facts by that point. Weird that
How on earth can anyone believe this guy? How on earth can he be trusted as an MP. How on earth can he ask people to vote for his party? Let him go head-to-head with Mr Alan Bates in a Live debate. Also, Mr Alan Bates should get a Knighthood for the amazing work he has done for all the Postmasters/Mistresses. Well done Mr Alan Bates
Oh yeah he could be jailed too he was involved in the post office mess.
It’s not just about the lies the evidence was out there to see he turned a blind eye eye
No one told him apart from the the main man responsible for blowing this scam wide open, he's sorry he got caught not paying attention.
Why did he believe the PO's answers rather than the SPMs concerns that the computer system was flawed.
Because he didn't want to rock the boat. Politicians always bak the side they think will win. And he's lazy.
Davey is a skin crawling individual but Rennels and Co were accomplished liars. The question is did any subbies approach him, and ifso, how did he deal with it.
MPs always seem to never be in power.
Joke of a "politician" always has been.
All PO executives and all responsible ministers still desperately trying to wriggle out from their responsibilities. Despicable.
Politicians really are terrible, it is clear from evidence discussed in the enquiry that there was regular correspondence between government and the POL and Royal Mail….that is not ’arms length’ . It was arms length when it suited.
It was government that appointed POL as a prosecution authority and failed to provide the appropriate governance or oversight.
It was government that approved the structure of POL and RM.
Who appointed the Board members and CEO of RM and POL, was it government as the sole share holder?
Not very intelligent or interested
Not intelligent
It takes a very special kind of person to be a Cabinet Minister.
Spot on pard!
Why aren't Sky grilling Rishi Sunak on his giving Fujitsu _£billions_ even after POL court cases? And there were other PO Ministers after Davey, why isn't Sky getting on their case? This is just the usual poor reporting - following the Tory client media line and not attempting to get at the truth.
Because this is an enquiry into the Post Office scandal. Sky is not responsible.
they had to know. There is no way 900 people would steal. Wake up people should have never gone on that long. "Lock them all up"
My car insurance despite no claims being made have more than doubled
Lying through their teeth all of them .
A sound management principle- authority can be delegated but not responsibility.
Police just don’t turn up. Tell us something we don’t know. ⛽️⛽️ look at his record!! The POST OFFICE. At arm’s length. He did Nothing 😱🤮😱
Others saw through the lies - why didn't he?
WHO is Davey accusing of lying. He talks very vaguely about executives and officials, but he doesn't say who, so his explanation already stinks. He is literally saying that having put public trust in Government oversight, he totally and consciously abdicated his obvious responsibility. He tries to talk as if he is not the one that is culpable, but as someone sitting in judgment.
She keeps feeding words down his mouth, a bit unprofessional from my experience, very amatureish interview style.
who on earth would want to hold Ed Davey 'at arms length?'
Strange, as convention is that one meets ones MP and then if one is unsatisfied one can move up to the person responsible for Department. Ed Davey seems to have a different understanding of Parliamentary Conventions. Of course what he might have done to really clear things up would have been to ask Mr. Bates to put a report in to him - perhaps through a Government Legal Service Lawyer if need be. I think though that that may have involved Herbert Smith Freehill reviewing the case and Ed Davey was paid £275000 by them as consultant on other issues.
I wish he had been allowed to complete that last point about the four year gap between the Fujitsu whistle blower and when any action was taken.
If an MP cannot see what is going on around and take at face value the lies told to then he is not fit to be an MP
I have fond memories of learning about our wonderful institution the post office in Primary school. These memories are obliterated by the sordid tories and their destruction of our infrastructure with their corrupt and foolish privatisation grift.
What did he get the money for ?.Not asking the questions,?I need a job like that.
The case for decades does not mean that is aok
Heads need to roll for this. If sub-postmasters were wrongly sent to jail, the people who KNEW the truth all along and lied should be sent to jail.
Well another "I didn't do anything wrong MP". It's surprising that when MPs or senior public servants get caught out, they filibuster and never answer a direct question.
My question remains, what was the purpose of this remote access? Were they intending to steal money from the sub-post offices? If not, why?
I wonder if there are special "spin doctor" sessions politicians go through when they embark on their careers... or does it come with the personality?
Ed Davey returning after spending several months in the Bermuda Triangle to avoid difficult questions in Parliament where strangely he is a member still
Aren't politicians meant to see through the BS? They seem to do it when being lobbied, oh wait, I get it now, ask no questions, get no lies, just brown envelopes. ;-)
He should resign now, isn’t that what he demands of others?
I like this lady! She really had no time for his bluster!
Ed Davey who went missing after the showing of the TV drama, and only over the past few weeks he's been popping up for the May elections.
Surely he can’t stay in position after knowing what a spineless individual he is.
Lib dem's, Tory's in all but the name. Waste of a vote!.
Nothing to do with me mate they told it was ok
He’s not sorry
Laughing all the way to the bank
He wanted ti change the management, but couldn't get his mates in
All 3 parties complicit.Petty party politics is not the issue - the underlying deeply embedded cultural imbalance between corporates and stakeholders is - driven of course by The Establishment Corporate Media Machine.
He has shot himself in the foot .What a Clown
Bring back Tim Farron ,a decent fellow, can't take to Davey at all
Such a disgrace. Now that he knows he was wrong were those positions given back to the families that were bankrolled.
Yak yak yak, but no substance. Perfect candidate
Sellers of illusions😢😢
The same he is lying now to save his own skin , he deserves to lose his Knighthood and lose his seat as an MP. Sorry not good enough people died because he is sorry?
That’s ok just return all the money get the cash back to the people who lost
Kay Burley is good
More Tory than the Tories when in that coalition
Ed 'they lied to me' Davey
Useless character.
If he cannot run the post office, he cannot run the country
Joking he is a joke.my grandson had his vehicle broken into and stereo stolen.police sent letter too his home too ask how did we do.never saw a policeman.
Why does he remind me of Sadiq Khan???
What a waste of space this bloke is.
Recruit detectives to solve car theft . Is he joking ?
What an awful interview, not interested in anything he says and just looking for soundbites.
Sometimes an interviewer's job is to keep the interviewee on the subject in question and not let them eat up time repeating the same talking points over and over which is what Davey was trying to do here.
Ed Davey is a guilty man pretending that it was nothing to do with him.
Ed Davey IS part of the post office problem.
Ed ducking and diving, knows he should have done a lot more, totally incompetent.
Sorry now but at the time didn't give a F#%k.
He was on a jolly, "they lied" but he wasn't doing his job. He is NOT fit to be a Prime Minister or ANY minister!
Nothing to see here guvnor oh oh sorry about that
Davey met Alan Bates because C4 were going to out him.
Trying to cover his own sorry back. The post office weren't the only ones who were lying,Run at arms length excuse,Wet blanket.
He is the epitome of why a lying weasel
What a horrible person
what a wnkr
What was he being paid his fat salary for? Time for clawback.
so the blame keeps going up the ladder but stops with the minister hahahaha funny that ehh
Bone idle waffler…
What a terrible interview
I don't see what else he could have done... he had no reason to believe that this one guy was telling the truth and everyone else was is in a conspiracy to cover it up. Given how busy he'd be on a day to day basis with the problems he knew he had to sort out, I can't see him being expected to do massive investigations for every grievance people had. It's easier to look back in hindsight, knowing what we know now.
SIR Ed Davey. Best out of the possible choices for PM. British values... most won't agree but look at the others..
