  • Liberal Democrats leader Sir Ed Davey joins Sky News to discuss the Post Office Horizon scandal, and criticism launched at himself by Alan Bates at the Post Office inquiry.
Sir Ed was the Postal Affairs minister between May 2010 and February 2012, when the scandal was emerging.
He reiterates that he has apologised to Mr Bates for his role, but claims again he was "lied to" by the Post Office.

Why did he blank James Arbuthnot and ignore the correspondence? He was told the convictions were unsafe and decided to believe the PO anyway.
In other words he chose to back the PO's version of the story, disbelieve that of his constituents or look after the people he is elected to serve.
Not impressed. A poor MP, a poor leader, and a poor minister.

The problem was not Ed Davey believing the lies but that he did not bother to investigate them when receiving pleas to do so from the SPMs. Who told him the lies or when he is a witness will it be i don't t recall

So what was the purpose of having a “post office minister” if the post office was run “at arms length”? What exactly was that role for?

Let him go head-to-head with Mr Alan Bates in a Live debate. Also, Mr Alan Bates should get a Knighthood for the amazing work he has done for all the Postmasters/Mistresses. Well done Mr Alan Bates

Politicians really are terrible, it is clear from evidence discussed in the enquiry that there was regular correspondence between government and the POL and Royal Mail….that is not ’arms length’ . It was arms length when it suited.
It was government that appointed POL as a prosecution authority and failed to provide the appropriate governance or oversight.
It was government that approved the structure of POL and RM.
Who appointed the Board members and CEO of RM and POL, was it government as the sole share holder?

Why aren't Sky grilling Rishi Sunak on his giving Fujitsu _£billions_ even after POL court cases? And there were other PO Ministers after Davey, why isn't Sky getting on their case? This is just the usual poor reporting - following the Tory client media line and not attempting to get at the truth.

WHO is Davey accusing of lying. He talks very vaguely about executives and officials, but he doesn't say who, so his explanation already stinks. He is literally saying that having put public trust in Government oversight, he totally and consciously abdicated his obvious responsibility. He tries to talk as if he is not the one that is culpable, but as someone sitting in judgment.

Strange, as convention is that one meets ones MP and then if one is unsatisfied one can move up to the person responsible for Department. Ed Davey seems to have a different understanding of Parliamentary Conventions. Of course what he might have done to really clear things up would have been to ask Mr. Bates to put a report in to him - perhaps through a Government Legal Service Lawyer if need be. I think though that that may have involved Herbert Smith Freehill reviewing the case and Ed Davey was paid £275000 by them as consultant on other issues.

I don't see what else he could have done... he had no reason to believe that this one guy was telling the truth and everyone else was is in a conspiracy to cover it up. Given how busy he'd be on a day to day basis with the problems he knew he had to sort out, I can't see him being expected to do massive investigations for every grievance people had. It's easier to look back in hindsight, knowing what we know now.
