I would say you are a master now and of course your radio repair skills goes without saying. For me you have one of the most enjoyable radio repair channels on UA-cam.
Hi Phillip. I wasn't very experienced at applying the finish and have had mixed results in the past but I'm learning, I'm also expanding my woodworking experience, Veneering and scroll saw cutting are new to me. Thank you Phillip 😀
Absolutely magnificent! At 30:30 you had me in stitches! The grille looks like a perfect task for a laser cutter, much less stressful than a scroll saw! I've seen one cut 1 mm strips of 3 mm poplar plywood, these things are nothing short of amazing! There's a lot of things a laser cutter can't do but cut intricate designs out of plywood at lightning speed is definitely something they can do. All you need to do is finish off the charred edges with a bit of sandpaper or a small file. I do know I'm spoiled I can use one at work every day though, they're quite expensive and bulky. If you can find a place that has one, definitely try it. You've mentioned Inkscape a few times and that's exactly what I use to create designs for the laser cutter. I think I might have been tempted to do the back of that speaker cabinet like a 50s/60s radio, i.e. 2 mm hardboard with a bunch of holes.
Thank you Ragnar8504. There is probably things I can do on a laser cutter that I haven't thought of but I think I will pass on one for the time being because I don't think I would get the use from it and they are big. A piece of peg board of the back, brilliant! 👍😀
David, you are the master! To do all that work and make a great video for us too! to setup the shots, film, then put it all together in editing. That’s a lot of work. Thank you.
Your woodwork skills remind me of my granddad, his hobby was French polishing. He could have put a high finish on any cabinet but I think you’d give him more than a run for his money.

Hi John, thank you. I hope it doesn't end up in a museum for a while 😄 She is amazing, and handy with a squeegee. Thank you, we are looking forward to a break, cheers 😀
David Hi For several months now, when I come home from work, I have been watching your channel until the very night - I am from Israel - but my native language is Russian - I did not immediately understand that you are from Australia - it is very difficult to understand your pronunciation - but I am learning :)) All my life I have been repairing medical equipment ..... But a lamp is something else ... I'm 62 and I've built a lot of amplifiers and phono stages You are a real master .... Super filming ... You devote a lot of time to the channel SUPER Yan
Who better to be in charge of a scroll saw procedure than Doctor Dave. I initially felt that anxiety with the first cut but gladly my fear was not warranted. Beautiful work Dave and as Mr McCain likes to tell us, "you've done it again". Seriously, you've done an awesome job and your ability to honour everything about the period with your restoration is to be admired. Enjoy your break and we'll look forward to your next adventure whenever that is. Cheers mate.
Hi Dave, what an understatement - "never have done this" - you are a natural talent and it seems you can do or manage everything, from wood to old brittle plastics and, not to forget, JB Weld. Congratulations for this beautiful speaker cabinett, and in between, restoring an old, rather rotten Radiola 5.
All you can say is WOW! What an amazing job of restoring what looked like a lost cause. With your skills and attention to details, I still think you should have a go at restoring a classic Australian car!
Another silk purse from a pigs ear. I can do the tubey-wirey-sparky things, 3-D print some knobs and missing or broken bits, but woodworking is alien technology for me, I admire your skill, patience and tenacity. Oh, and your dry humour is not lost on us.
Thanks Clive. I should try and print some knobs for this, good idea, thanks Clive. I have worked with wood my whole life, even as a youngster but only as a hobby. Clues from UA-cam make it easier these days 🙂
Wow !!! This looks great ! Loved all 3 videos . You really are a great craftsman ! Your friends must really love it . Love how you never give up and just keep plugging away until you get it right .
It's kind of a shame it doesn't have a phonograph built in with that big enclosed 8" speaker. You did an absolutely outstanding job on this. This thing was garbage and headed towards a dump. Now it can become a proud family heirloom. Honestly, if my friend did this to an old beat up radio I had and asked him to fix, I would be speechless and feel terrible because of all the hours I would know it had taken. I would feel greatly indebted. The speaker turned out great too. It looks very period correct too. Absolutely outstanding work.
You are truly a master of wood work, building a speaker cabinet from scratch, well done !!! I have watched the whole series of this and i just keep shaking my head in aww. Great work and i hope your customer realizes all of the work that goes into bringing a piece of history back to life. I look forward to the next installment.
Absolutely brilliant David. Fantastic restoration and craftsmanship. We really enjoyed all three parts of this adventure. Enjoy your R & R 🏖️ and we'll be here when you are ready. 🙂

Dave you are a legend. It looks astounding, even inside! I love that you mentioned Dame Edna who we were lucky enough to see in Seattle a few years ago. Oh how she picked on a woman in the audience who lived in one of the toniest suburbs of Seattle. Our hotel front desk person was young and never heard of Dame Edna. She thought we were talking about a rock band. Anyway, beautiful work yet again!
And another year has come and gone, I return to your great video to get a reenforcement of energy that comes from watching the master at work. This global warming crap has got to stop, used to be we never saw snow till after halloween, yet today it is snowing here, the ground is white and huge flakes are falling from the sky. It is just to damn early for winter to come but like a charging bison, you can't stop the charge! Thanks again for the great job, and you are right, it does come easier every year.
Your respite from YouTubing is well deserved, but please please continue to produce these high quality, interesting, informative and at times funny videos. Your production quality is only rivaled by your electronic and woodworking skills.
Ah yes, WORK, is the curse of the electronic hobbyist! Back when I was a kid, they said Work was the curse of the drinking class, however I stopped drinking in 1980 other then an occasional glass of whine with my wonderful wife of 51 years and 5 days, may she rest in peace, the anniversary of her death is close now and I find my tear ducts still work just fine as every damn song on the radio, every television show from the old days remind me of her. We were inseparable for over 50 years, GOD how I do miss her. Sorry for the rant, I do love watching you make wonderful art pieces from trashed radio's of old you, sir, are indeed a jack of all trades, yet a master of all!
Just magnificent Dave. Everything in here encourages me to up my game. Thanks for the constant inspiration to try harder. Cheers mate and love to Nurse Mrs. Tipton.
I used to have the skills and tools to do woodwork , so I do appreciate your efforts in wood skills. I lost my desire and patience though. One of the key skills. Good job!
Yes, tremendous. Watching you create that speaker box from nothing was as satisfying as watching you restore that beautiful radio. One thing I did miss was your famous 'casualty list' from the plastic radio - you usually give us a glimpse and for some strange reason I like seeing that from each restoration.
Fantastic end to a fantastic series! The new speaker box looks every bit as good as the radio it now goes with. The moment I saw the two together I thought to myself "Gosh, I hope he put soft rubber feet underneath the speaker box so it won't mar the top surface of that beautiful radio!" Of course you did! It reminds me that I bought a very similar looking speaker, date-stamped 1926, at a flea market recently. It has the same cathedral arched grill but is not as neatly cut, and the field coil speaker is original but the deep bullhorn shaped cone is badly torn. Still, now that I see how it's done, it should be restorable. Thanks for a very enjoyable series!
Thank you Sincerely Yours. I think the grills were hand cut back in the day, they can be a bit rough, imagine doing that all day 🙄 Good luck with your speaker, I never see anything like that here, well done 🙂
WOW DAVID you went above and beyond with this one !!! This without doubt is my favourite from amongst your projects and its ironic that my comment on the last project was offering to pay for something just like this but I could never imagine 1 in such a disressed state . I was a little miffed to read a comment here where they said this financially couldn't be worth doing and not to do another is kind of missing the point and passion / motivation of hobbys and was heartened to hear you say how satisfying it was for you as it was for the viewers . Personally I thought this drew out a great range of your skills and that coupled with your attention to detail produced something your going to find hard to top !!! By the way the new fabric etc .... chosen by a genius so congratulations to MRS T ... and the biggest surprise/shock of all .?CHEECH and CHONG 😁 . Enjoy your break David , you've earned it .
Thank you Mei. You are correct, it's not always about the money or time, the cost involved was minor, the time spent was a lot more but I enjoyed it and sharing with others is also very rewarding. I like the fabric she picked, much better than my effort, I should have gone to the top in the first place 🙄 I've come down from the fumes, the Cheech and the Chong LP is back in the cupboard 🙂
My admiration for your work was already great, but after this restoration it is reaching unearthly proportions! Not only you are a first class radio technician, you are also an accomplished cabinet maker. Keep surprising me, Dave!
This IS one of my favorite projects! I particularly enjoyed seeing how you came up with the speaker box design and implemented it. It came out wonderful! I will miss your videos during r&r and I hope you have a great time! Cheers from Georgia, USA.
And here it is once more. I love the way this radio came out, I keep coming back to see the process once again. You know I would have considered removing those panels on the sides and putting in the cloth, the putting speakers on each side sort of like the old Juke Boxes of the 50's when I was a kid. Just a thought, Merry Christmas, a day late I guess. Sad Christmas this year, the weather was so bad my grand kids never made the trip South to see us in South Dakota, blizzard warnings for our area today. My daughter and I celebrated the holiday and my niece came over, I am the last of the Ericsson clan, well of mom's kids that is, Mom is still kicking but I never made the trip to see her, the home is but 5 blocks from my house but I am suffering a bit of bronchitis and I didn't want to pass it on to her, the home has some Covid going around and I didn't want to get that either. Perhaps next week I can make the visit. My son and his family said they will make the trip South for mom's 98th birthday in February if she is still with us. Her health is failing but she is a strong old gal.
Thanks Jerry. I did consider putting the speaker on the side but chose another path. We had storms and cyclone strength winds around us. A lot of destruction and homes without power for many days to come. We came out OK thankfully 🙂
That looks amazing and so in keeping with the style of the rest of the cabinet. That belongs in a radio museum showroom. The owners certainly picked the right person for the resto. You've set a high benchmark with this one. I fear everyone will be sending you beaten up radio's and cabinets for you to work your magic on now.
Hi Ian, thank you. The speaker was something I wanted to do to see if I could do something like that. I hope I don't have to do another radio in this poor of a condition 😮🙂
Hi David. An absolutely stunning end result. The radio and speaker really do compliment each very well. This really does show off your ability of skills and craftsmanship. I hope the owner will be very happy after all the top quality work that you put into it. Again another enjoyable video series.
Great work David. I share your pain with mitre joints! Most mitre saws are not accurate enough to provide exactly repeatable cuts. I have an old small DW ‘pull’ mitre saw which has very fine adjustments to the cut angle. Works great on picture frame type constructions. For longer cuts I use a table saw with a home made sliding table. Gives perfect angle cuts. I made a speaker box for my SW radio out of pre laminated MDF. It was about 10 inches square and it came out perfect. Very pleased with myself lol. Take care Lynton
Hi Lynton, I was wondering how you were. I think it's all in the way you line up mitre joints, my machine cuts them perfectly at 45 degrees but they are difficult to get lined up perfectly. No room for error with prefinished MDF, well done getting a good finish. Thank care Lynton, cheers 😀
Dave your skill at woodworking (timber working?) and your abilities to fabricate missing or broken parts are incredible. Your video editing skills are as good as any ones on UA-cam. Thank You for the hours of instruction and great entertainment.
It looks gorgeous! Such a pleasure to watch. You are so skilled, a real engineer. Oh, hang on, that's what you did for a living. No wonder. 😊 Hope you and your wife have a nice break and have fun with the chores and such. A great finish to the 'season' with a double barrelled finale. 👍😊
David as I have said - outstanding - amazing... I loved watching you build the speaker enclosure... and then to top it off getting the plastic fantastic working. By the way I have added a new term to radio restorers that everyone should use... the "Tipton Wiggle". Enjoy your break and I look forward to your next project.
Hi Kenneth, thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it. If the 'wiggle' doesn't work give up, I'm out of ideas. Thanks Kenneth, we could pop over to NZ but the bubble has burst 🙄🙂
You're such a competent woodworker David. I would watch you build something from timber only on any day! Wait a tic, I just did! I love your sense of humor too!

Thanks ljetronic, it's pleasing you can get something from my videos 🙂
Absolutely stunning work there David! Makes me want to learn how to work with wood better. Only ever focused on the electronics side of things
I love working with wood but it's, slow progress sometimes. Thanks Burnt Out Electronics 🙂
Another great video from the master renovator. This channel gets better and better. Certainly my favourite channel.Best wishes Terry uk 🇬🇧 ❤
Thanks Terry 👍😀
David, you are the master! To do all that work and make a great video for us too! to setup the shots, film, then put it all together in editing. That’s a lot of work.
Thank you.
Thanks Allan, thanks. A lot of work but it keeps me busy in retirement 🙂
Your woodwork skills remind me of my granddad, his hobby was French polishing. He could have put a high finish on any cabinet but I think you’d give him more than a run for his money.
Thanks Wenlocktvdx, I do a bit of French polishing from time to time, I should have done it to the speaker 😀
Wenlocktvdx, Dave does amazing work. One of his that I really enjoyed is this one:
ua-cam.com/video/T0ToSfoszWI/v-deo.html
I watched another 9 part series that is sort of Dave like that you might enjoy watching, the first part of 9 is at:

Going away? Well be safe and come back soon bro. Love your videos. The squeegee was awesome. I lost it on that one. Watching you restore this stuff is one of the highlights of my week. Hope to see you again soon.
Thanks Midnight Wind, we will and I will. Cya soon 😀
Geez, David, you gave us two radios for the price of one. Masterful work; I hope your friend appreciates what you've done for him. Rest and relax on your holiday and I look forward to your next radio adventure.
Hi Chris, thank you. Looking forward to spending some time with my wife 😀
@@DavidTipton101 I hope she still recognises you since you've spent so much time with the radios!
@@chrishansen724 I send her a photo of me on Facebook from time to time 😉
Oh my David! The suspense was much more than worth it. This is a museum worthy piece on an international scale. Great humor, BTW. Ha! Your better half is an amazing lady. Kudos to her. Please enjoy your vacation together. That's the paradise in life. Thank You!!
Hi John, thank you. I hope it doesn't end up in a museum for a while 😄 She is amazing, and handy with a squeegee. Thank you, we are looking forward to a break, cheers 😀
WOW, that's been one hell of a project! Fantastic end result, a true master craftsman...
It was a big project, thanks Peter 🙂
Another great video thanks Dave from ALL OF US
Thanks MyRandom Channel 😀
David Hi
For several months now, when I come home from work, I have been watching your channel until the very night - I am from Israel - but my native language is Russian - I did not immediately understand that you are from Australia - it is very difficult to understand your pronunciation - but I am learning :))
All my life I have been repairing medical equipment .....
But a lamp is something else ... I'm 62 and I've built a lot of amplifiers and phono stages
You are a real master .... Super filming ... You devote a lot of time to the channel
SUPER
Yan
Haha... in English too 😀 Thank you Yan, I have answered in your native tongue below 👍😉
oh! I just wish I had even half your woodworking skills David!!!!
Thanks Chris, I'm learning as I go 😀
Who better to be in charge of a scroll saw procedure than Doctor Dave.
Thank you Graham. I also had my faithful nurse standing by with swabs etc during the process. Thanks Graham, looking forward to a break 😀
Bravo, sir. Definitely a Master's work. Too many times I heard you say "try", but you clearly underestimate your abilities.
Thanks Larry. A lot of things are a first for me so I am unsure of the outcome 🙂
Thanks Volktales. I wanted to do a car but lack the room and my wife refused to leave her car outside 🙄
After that mammoth task i think that you deserve a break. Brilliant workmanship, and once again a big thank you for sharing. Terry
Thanks Terry I will enjoy some time off and so will my wife, thanks 👍🙂
Wow !!! This looks great ! Loved all 3 videos . You really are a great craftsman ! Your friends must really love it . Love how you never give up and just keep plugging away until you get it right .
Thanks Mel, yes, I don't like not finishing something I start, it's really annoying 🙄😄
Thanks tarstarkusz, a gramophone would have finished it of, nice thought. Thanks, the owner is very happy, I am happy to do it for them 🙂
Beautiful crafsmanship! Hats off...again! 👏
Thank you Jacob 😀
You are truly a master of wood work, building a speaker cabinet from scratch, well done !!! I have watched the whole series of this and i just keep shaking my head in aww. Great work and i hope your customer realizes all of the work that goes into bringing a piece of history back to life. I look forward to the next installment.
Thanks Stephen, a lot of work but it's something I enjoy so why not 🙂
Yes i can see you enjoy repairing and fault finding just as much as the work you do on restoring the cabinet. A true artist in every sense.
Excellent work, a craftsman for sure!
Thank you Lloyd 🙂
Absolutely brilliant David. Fantastic restoration and craftsmanship. We really enjoyed all three parts of this adventure. Enjoy your R & R 🏖️ and we'll be here when you are ready. 🙂
Thanks Dean. I shouldn't be too long 👍😀
Watching this video was the highlight of my day! I thoroughly enjoyed it. Your skill and attention to detail is second to none.
Thank you Reg 😀
Brendan Daly superb ,absolutely superb words cannot express the enjoyment I get watching how simple you make it all look , have a great holiday , enjoy the break ,cheers ,Brendan Cork Ireland
Hi Brendan, thank you. We spent a wonderful 2 weeks driving around Ireland including back in 2015. We stayed in B&Bs, fantastic time 🙂
Typically smashing job from you, mate. The customer will be blown away...I know I was considering what you started with!
Thanks Orion Warren, I think they will be happy 🙂
Great auxiliary speaker - beautiful housing.
The change of material at the bottom of the radio visually fits perfectly.
Good job!
Thanks Robert, the new fabric looks much better 🙂
You have a great holiday and be safe, all the best Dave to you and yours
Thanks Red Shutter Photography, all the best to you too 🙂
Wow, what a work. Not only that: what a great work you did on that old radio. It looks amazing. Thanks again for this series of videos.
Thanks Jan, I'm glad you enjoyed it. It was touch and go as to whether it could be done but it looked pretty good in the end 😀
Always a pleasure watching your videos, Dave! I enjoy the comedy too! Keep up the excellent work.
Thanks Adam, will do 👍🙂
Dave you are a legend.
Hi Mark, thank you. I wasn't sure if Dame Edna was known in the US so I am happy you have seen her 😀
And another year has come and gone, I return to your great video to get a reenforcement of energy that comes from watching the master at work.
Thanks Jerry, this is an old video 😊
Wow, I am always impressed with your talent. And I always learn some new techniques. Thanks for sharing this.
Thank you Johnny 🙂
Very enjoyable series, thanks for sharing Dave!
Thank you for watching James 😀
Your respite from YouTubing is well deserved, but please please continue to produce these high quality, interesting, informative and at times funny videos. Your production quality is only rivaled by your electronic and woodworking skills.
Thanks Erv. As MacArthur said, "I'll be back"... or was that Arnie 🤔😉
Hi Jerry, I can only imagine your loss, time will ease it but never forget. Thanks Jerry, I thought you were going to say "master of none" 😄
Just magnificent Dave. Everything in here encourages me to up my game. Thanks for the constant inspiration to try harder. Cheers mate and love to Nurse Mrs. Tipton.
Thanks Mark, I will pass on your regards to the nurse 👍😀
I used to have the skills and tools to do woodwork , so I do appreciate your efforts in wood skills. I lost my desire and patience though. One of the key skills. Good job!
I can understand that Jim, desire is the key. Thanks 🙂
Yes, tremendous. Watching you create that speaker box from nothing was as satisfying as watching you restore that beautiful radio. One thing I did miss was your famous 'casualty list' from the plastic radio - you usually give us a glimpse and for some strange reason I like seeing that from each restoration.
Thanks Project Yeti. I did record the casualty list, I must have cut it from the video by accident, sorry 'bout that 🤦♂️
Fantastic end to a fantastic series!
Fantastic restoration, it looks like a factory made radio from the 30’s, very impressive work, thank you for sharing.😃👍
Thank you Sonny, my pleasure 😀
Superior craftsmanship mate. Thank-You Dave for all your hard work.
Thanks for watching James 👍😀
I wish I had a tenth of your skills, absolutely amazing! Thank you so much for sharing your work.
Thank you Mr A Coomber, my pleasure 🙂
Amazing craftsmanship! Especially the custom speaker cabinet is super! Thanks for sharing and keep them coming!
Thank you peterson today 😀
My admiration for your work was already great, but after this restoration it is reaching unearthly proportions! Not only you are a first class radio technician, you are also an accomplished cabinet maker. Keep surprising me, Dave!
Thanks HH, I will try 😄
This IS one of my favorite projects! I particularly enjoyed seeing how you came up with the speaker box design and implemented it. It came out wonderful! I will miss your videos during r&r and I hope you have a great time! Cheers from Georgia, USA.
Hi Tom in Georgia, thank you. Looking forward to some R&R 😀
An absolutely beautiful restoration. Thank you for saving another tube radio!
Thank you Nelson 👍🙂
Amazing work! Really love how the radio looks now!
Thanks Alexey 🙂
Great to see the conclusion and what a transformation! Looking forward to the next project... All the best...
Thanks Andrew, all the best 👍🙂
You have many talents ,a man for all seasons and skills
Thank you Kenneth 🙂
Once again sir -- Absolutely Brilliant! You continue to amaze me with your vast knowledge and dedication!!
Thank you Dean 👍🙂
Stunning. Absolutely incredible job on a piece that you initially suggested feeding to the wood chipper.
Thanks Jim, if not for the insistence from the owner I would have discarded it for parts 🙂
Hi David. An absolutely stunning end result. The radio and speaker really do compliment each very well. This really does show off your ability of skills and craftsmanship. I hope the owner will be very happy after all the top quality work that you put into it. Again another enjoyable video series.
Thanks Chris, I hope they like it, it might be on Gumtree next week 😄
Superb job Dave! Your knowledge of both electronics and woodworking are fantastic.. You should be proud.. we are!
Thank you Le 🙂
The radio turned out fantastic but the speaker cabinet is a jewel.
Thank you Gaita 😀
A woodworking tour de force and a bonus old radio repair job. My kind of Saturday night!
Thank you Don 😀
Great work David. I share your pain with mitre joints! Most mitre saws are not accurate enough to provide exactly repeatable cuts. I have an old small DW ‘pull’ mitre saw which has very fine adjustments to the cut angle. Works great on picture frame type constructions. For longer cuts I use a table saw with a home made sliding table. Gives perfect angle cuts. I made a speaker box for my SW radio out of pre laminated MDF. It was about 10 inches square and it came out perfect. Very pleased with myself lol.
Take care
Lynton
Hi Lynton, I was wondering how you were. I think it's all in the way you line up mitre joints, my machine cuts them perfectly at 45 degrees but they are difficult to get lined up perfectly. No room for error with prefinished MDF, well done getting a good finish. Thank care Lynton, cheers 😀
Dave your skill at woodworking (timber working?) and your abilities to fabricate missing or broken parts are incredible. Your video editing skills are as good as any ones on UA-cam. Thank You for the hours of instruction and great entertainment.
Thanks Mack, I appreciated your comment 👍😀
It looks gorgeous! Such a pleasure to watch. You are so skilled, a real engineer. Oh, hang on, that's what you did for a living. No wonder. 😊 Hope you and your wife have a nice break and have fun with the chores and such. A great finish to the 'season' with a double barrelled finale. 👍😊
Thanks Pauline, I can't wait to get stuck into the chores and a bit of a holiday... if the rolling lockdowns permit 😀
@@DavidTipton101 Yes, I didn't think that through! haha.
I second the two thumbs up Dave. You definitely do some really wonderful work. Its always a joy to see you work.

Haha... thanks Steve 👍😄
I was speechless after the previous part, I am now beyond thunderstruck! You are a true craftsman, David. Congratulations! Well done - you deserve and may claim your R and R with impunity!
Haha.. thanks Dave. It will be nice to take a break, cheers 🙂

Here too David, thank you 🙂
Its my Friday morning at work, I have to wait all day before I can get home and watch, very frustrating. I'm looking forward to sitting down with a cold beer and watching this episode on my desktop instead of my phone, plus I have to get some work done today.
Sorry to hear that Mr Byamile, much better to watch it on a PC though 😀
